00:00it's a matchup that everyone has waited for the classic showdown the Celtics and the Lakers bird
00:10against magic for so many years it was Lakers Celtics Celtics Lakers back-to-back I remember
00:18when I wrote about Magic and Larry they met famously on the set of a converse commercial
00:23which was a very short and kind of lame commercial to be honest I heard Converse made a pair of bird
00:31shoes for last year's MVP yep when they made a pair of magic shoes but this is MVP okay magic show me
00:38what you got the bird shoe the magic shoe choose your weapon from Converse Converse was the only
00:47one really for a long time we owned college basketball Michael Jordan he warm in North
00:55Carolina they were one of our schools Michael drove up to Reading where they make Converse got
01:01a meeting up there and said I want to be an endorser for you I've worn Converse my whole
01:05life I grew up next to the town my grandfather or Converse and apparently it was man no thanks
01:11we're good we got magic and Larry so Jordan went over to Nike the NBA can't stop you from wearing
01:19them Air Jordans from Nike Air Jordan changed everything when the first Air Jordan came out
01:29in 1985 Nike hoped he would sell five million over the first five years of his deal and they sold a
01:36hundred million in less than a year that was when they realized that one player could drive this
01:45you know nobody in the world would cover my main man Michael Jordan nobody nobody nobody impossible
01:51impossible impossible however it's easy to cover Mars Blackman you couldn't have possibly forecasted how
01:59Jordan turned himself into a brand the greatest players of all time Dr. J and Magic and Larry and
02:05Kareem none of them had done that other shoe companies start getting into the business
02:10especially Reebok who's Reebok we didn't even know who they were
02:35I loved basketball my whole life I majored in marketing but did all of my papers based on what
02:57I would do if I worked for the NBA or for the Celtics or anything really with basketball I heard a very
03:05familiar tale which was there really aren't positions for women in sports I interviewed for nine straight
03:14months before I got a chance and the only people that would take a chance on me were Reebok we were a
03:19tiny company I think I was like the 16th person hired there at the time at Reebok we make basketball
03:26shoes designed to take you as far as you want to go from the asphalt to the polished floors of the NBA
03:32if we sign these regional people that are very accommodating to go into the grassroots imagine what
03:40that will do for our brand Wayman Tisdale was the first athlete that we signed and then I met and Roy Hinson
03:51and Denny and Jim DJ came over from Nike those were our first four athletes with Reebok in 1986
03:58they weren't one of 200 guys and they didn't call a call center they called me that's what they really
04:07want it they didn't want to get lost in the sea of a million swooshes they wanted to be used
04:11Dominique Wilkins was at Brooks at the time and they weren't really doing anything with him and so
04:18his agent contacted us and said he would really like to be with a company that wants to do things
04:24and are you really going to be a player in basketball because that's important to him
04:27he was born in Paris and so one of the first trips I did was with Dominique to take him back to France
04:35Dominique became the first athlete that we signed that was really a significant player for Reebok
04:45Dominique was a premier scorer in his pride the guy's nickname was the human highlight film which
04:57pretty much summed him up so for Reebok that was a huge get I mean if you look at Michael Jordan in
05:05the 80s he would have been noted for scoring and his dunk contest performance Dominique Wilkins was a
05:13guy who could keep up with Jordan in both of those things the perfect score of 50 from Dominique Wilkins
05:19the answers were getting bigger they were getting stronger the game was getting a lot faster the guards
05:25the forwards the centers they were all becoming much more specified athletes on the basketball court
05:30the footwear needed to catch up the procreation team we kind of like had to go head down and work on
05:38what's next the one that rose fairly quickly to the top was an inflatable system we were proposing to
05:47put this inflatable device inside of the shoes now at the same time the Nike team had this shoe called
05:55the Nike air pressure it was their own version of an inflatable shoe Nike had decided that they were
06:00going to have an external device to inflate the shoes so that they could minimize the cost and the weight
06:06and all that kind of stuff which is you know it's a it's a decent approach what we chose early on on
06:12the Reebok pump was that everything was going to be on your shoe I liked the Reebok approach they
06:17thought it was more elegant and simpler for people in February of 89 we're at the Atlanta Super Show which
06:26was a big show our CEO our president Paul Fireman he basically held it up at this Atlanta shoe show and he
06:34said this is the new standard of footwear of the 90s by the end of the summer of 89 we had a shoe that
06:43worked we were going to production build it most basketball shoes were about 80 90 100 dollars the
06:50retailers they had a lot of trepidation Foot Locker was going to take a few thousand as a favor we had
06:57very little orders we had to retail for a hundred and seventy dollars 170 it's like a gimmick you
07:06know run it for a hundred and seventy dollars put it for down payment on the car I prefer it by sneakers
07:11that's ridiculous say a hundred seventy dollars oh my gosh it has the pump detourge that's what I'm
07:20saying you don't get that then you see just any sneaker there I understand this but still I would
07:24pay to order some of these stuff because you're cheap the pump isn't really doing what we hoped it
07:32would do and we're not sure if it's because it's a little bit heavy or if it's the price point and
07:37people aren't used to that from Reebok yet so the original pump we did a commercial with Dominique
07:44you know the first time I wore my pumps from Reebok I got so excited I sent a pair to my friend Danny
07:50and said it's time to play and he showed up so I sent a pair to my friend Doc and he showed up
07:56hey stay lock up when you're done Dominique Doc Rivers Pat Riley we were all out there in LA doing
08:05this commercial we started filming this kind of behind the scenes and what do you think of the pump
08:10and just to get another avenue for the players to be genuine and not read something scripted off of
08:15an ad agency and that ended up becoming the commercial the key is the pump this is your pump
08:21push this little thing here and you just pump pump pump pump pump you know how to do that don't you
08:26five or six pumps I say 15 pumps 20 to 25 times 70 pumps to do it you know what I'm gonna use this
08:32also is intimidate people these things in here on what they're called airbags when you want to release
08:37it's a little button back here that you just push down you can hear the air leaving the pump
08:44I think we're on to something here that commercial was not scripted we used outtakes of footage that
08:50we've just planned on airing at our sales meeting some people like BMWs I like gym shoes we had great
08:57players that are making impacts in their markets but we didn't have that kind of arrogance if you will
09:03pull our swagger and then we signed Chuck Daly and Chuck gets us Dennis Rodman great defense
09:10doesn't defeat and I have MVP feet that's why I plan to pump from Reebok when I'm pumped up I get
09:17support protection and a custom fit that's unbeatable I'm a hot dog but when it comes to protection
09:23this is no bull pump up and air out the notion that Reebok was going to make a performance shoe
09:31and bring it right at Nike's face that was part of the intensity and that was part of the rivalry
09:37of the early 90s in sneakers from Reebok it fits a little better than your ordinary athletic shoe
09:45the pump was really starting to take off this was a full-on street fight pump up and air out we were
09:54a really young company and we were basically taking that getting head on we were sick of being the
10:00disrespected like you know little brother on the block we're not just nice guys we're here to play
10:06so Michael my man if you want to fly first class pump up and air out
10:12here we are at the all-star weekend and we've always kind of been second to Nike but we felt
10:24pretty good about the pump you know it was starting to take on a lot of momentum and then all of a
10:31sudden we signed Sean Kemp a lot of the talk that year was Sean Kemp Kemp was the guy who was sort of
10:40the heir apparent to Dominique Wilkins to Michael Jordan Kemp was the guy
10:45so we're hoping okay if he wouldn't slam dunk we'll do some marketing he'll be
10:55thrilled and we'll have our chance to kind of let the world know that Sean Kemp is ours
10:59so we're thinking about these print ads to congratulate Sean we think this is his time and
11:05along comes Steve Brown he's going to compete in the slam dunk contest
11:10I got into like maybe like two weeks before the contest one guy dropped out a bigger name dropped
11:19out I was overlooked man I know that people just had no clue on the things I could do
11:26we flew down to Charlotte together and we talked about he really wanted to distinguish himself as
11:35somebody to be noticed in the NBA we weren't a sponsor of slam dunk but we were trying to come up with
11:42this you know unique marketing thing of course and so we talked about pumping issues it was a shoe that
11:51came out that people kind of didn't get the concept of Joanne mentioned it's like think about it you
11:57know show people how nice issue is and I was playing in the shoe all season so it wasn't like I just bought
12:04myself for the contest I was wearing a shoe everybody came to the dunk contest that was the event you
12:12didn't have camera phones and things like that so you had to be there to enjoy it live in person
12:17very much with me two-time slam dunk champion Dominique Wilkins Dominique before the competition starts
12:22who do you like right now I think John Kemp by being with him this summer he's gonna be tough to beat
12:28every player was there every celebrity was there I'm looking at so many people there that were just
12:37actors or actresses as you remember Will Smith must be on the sideline and he was just up and coming
12:43you know fresh prints and I'm worried about I can't embarrass myself I've missed my first dunk
12:49so I'm sitting next to Sean Kemp these kids are positive autographs so the one kid goes hey
12:56Sean is that your little brother next to you because we had the same haircut I look at the
13:00kids like oh nice little brother I'm in the contest and kids start laughing and walked off so I was
13:05there you know I gotta do something real special while I'm in Charlotte oh he's pumping his shoes up
13:12first of all he's got the favorite right there he's pumping up his shoes
13:17that's worth about a million bucks to it right there another
13:24high-walking lob and
13:26come on now come on
13:30they love it let's get 61 now that was spectacular now he's letting the air out
13:35I had to really change the mindset of the crowd from Sean Kemp and two local guys who was in a contest for the
13:53horny I got something for all this and I got a bunch of dunks that nobody's seen before of Don it was easy for me
14:01oh yeah
14:04oh
14:06come on come on come on
14:08if any fifty come out that's the one right there tonight oh my goodness if I don't know how little that man is
14:15that is unbelievable
14:17I already have kind of my duck list I had like 12 dunks I could do my last dunk was gonna be with the hat I was gonna
14:25dunk the Reebok head and then dunk the ball so that's what we're talking about hey if you get to finals dunk the Reebok head and dunk the ball that was really my last dunk
14:33so it's Brown and Kemp going in the finals now Sean Kemp is in his second year but only 21 years old
14:41youngest player in the NBA D Brown is 22 years old a rookie
14:44I found out when I was going in for my last dunk that I couldn't use any hats or props or anything
14:49so it kind of broke that whole situation
14:52I just gotta do something different
14:55I gotta do something special
14:56and the rest is history
14:59that's the cherry on the sundae
15:10John Kemp knows it everybody knows it
15:16D Brown 22 year old
15:20for this company
15:27Massachusetts company to devise
15:29pump shoes
15:31to have your slam dunk entry this young kid do it on cue and then win
15:37because if you missed it no one would ever remember it
15:40we're such a visual group of consumers aren't we
15:44and that was a great visual for Reebok and a great bump for D Brown I was glad to see it happen
15:49after I won a dunk contest all of a sudden I was that celebrity I was that guy
15:54it was that night I'm at the NBA party and NBA guys are coming to me
15:58hey great job boom boom boom boom party's going on and something happened
16:03fans start breaching the area
16:06security's pushing on the players get out
16:09and all of a sudden I run into Michael Jordan
16:13somehow and I still to this day think this is premeditated
16:17somehow I got in the same alleyway with me Michael Jordan and his bodyguards
16:22so I'm like well how did this happen
16:24this is very very odd
16:26he goes you know you know you just started the shoe wars
16:29I go what what I don't I don't understand what you're saying
16:33he could have said anything to me at that time I didn't care it was Michael Jordan
16:36when I got back to my hotel room and kind of told Joanne
16:40I said Michael Jordan told him I just started shoe wars
16:42I just remember getting a call from Paul Feynman at my hotel room
16:51then I picked it up and he was like Joanne
16:53you don't have any idea what happened to the pump over the weekend
16:56the pumps had flown off the shelves you couldn't find them anywhere
17:02everybody wanted the pump
17:05everybody wanted D
17:08the whole thing just changed
17:12we always started the second half of the season on the road
17:16and I remember we're coming out of the hotel
17:19Bird walks out and I walk out
17:21and all the fans ran past Bird
17:25and start asking for my autograph
17:27and I was in shock
17:30what is going on here this is surreal
17:32this is coming really fast
17:34hey D, D Brown
17:36what are you doing here in New York?
17:37purchasing my new duck
17:38all my new shoes
17:39Reebok Omnizones
17:41Reebok Omnizones?
17:42yeah
17:42very lightweight which is key for this jam
17:45oh yeah
17:46which jam?
17:47the King Kong jam
17:48it went from the Ricky
17:54who's playing well with the Celtics
17:55to the guy who changed the shoe game
17:57overnight
17:58I didn't have to say
18:01I bump my shoe and jump higher
18:02I did and everybody was like
18:04man that must make you jump higher
18:05that was the effect
18:07the pump outsold Jordans
18:12in the calendar year
18:13that was the first time ever
18:15it was crazy
18:16that was the face of Reebok
18:18and I was part of the recruiting process
18:20of getting these guys to sign as well
18:22coming out of high school
18:30I was number one player in high school
18:32to me
18:33it went so fast
18:35and at that time
18:36Las Vegas had one thing
18:38as far as sports
18:39and that was the college
18:40UNLV
18:40you know
18:42every day
18:43we was on TV
18:43I would say I was a physical guy
18:48I enjoyed the contact down low
18:51I love the contact
18:52love to get physical
18:53I would really leave the floor
18:56I had like a 42-43 inch vertical
18:58and didn't mind showing it
18:59in UNLV
19:01they were sponsored by Nike
19:03Sonny was our rep
19:04Sonny VanCaro
19:06he was the UNLV rep
19:07so I knew Sonny
19:08I think I've been in Sonny's house before
19:11I don't know if we get in trouble for that
19:12but Sonny was a Larry Johnson fan
19:15so in my mind
19:17I always thought
19:18Nike
19:19with the first pick
19:21the Charlotte Hornets select
19:23Larry Johnson
19:24from University of Nevada
19:26Las Vegas
19:27I was drafted number one
19:29so I thought
19:30hey
19:30I know my Nike contract coming
19:32like a week later
19:34the Ken Bay gets a Nike contract
19:36and Kenny Anderson
19:38was drafted too
19:39and he ended up getting a Nike contract
19:40so I ended up seeing these guys
19:42that went up under me
19:43started getting contracts
19:44my agent
19:46he was just real slow
19:47when I asked about my Nike contract
19:49and at one point
19:50he just started telling me
19:51call Sonny
19:52call Sonny
19:53so I finally called Sonny
19:55you know Sonny
19:57yeah I can tell he was down
19:59he was like
19:59I'm there
20:00man I gotta tell you
20:02Nike don't think
20:03you're gonna be a good NBA player
20:05yeah he messes with me a little bit
20:10that Nike would think that
20:11but
20:11being an undersized power forward
20:14a lot of people were saying that
20:15and if you go look at every program
20:18at UNLV
20:19even from my junior year
20:20to the senior year
20:21every game we played
20:22I was always 6'7
20:23I was always 6'7
20:25Larry Johnson 6'7

20:26I remember reading the program
20:28we played Temple
20:29in Philly
20:30and I'm in the locker room
20:31looking at the program
20:32they said it's Larry Johnson 6'9
20:33I said ooh
20:346'9
20:35you know
20:36there's a rookie combine
20:38that you go to
20:39they take your official height
20:40and official weight
20:41and I came out 6'5 and a half
20:43here is a young man
20:47from Dallas
20:48Texas
20:48who grew up
20:49as someone said
20:51it's as though the worst parts
20:52of the ghettos in America
20:53had moved to the neighborhood
20:54he grew up in
20:55he had to battle his way
20:56out of there
20:56to go to college
20:57now his dream is about
20:58to come true
20:59he's going to sign
21:00for millions of dollars
21:01is he big enough
21:01to play power forward
21:02in the NBA
21:03that was going out
21:04you know Nike thought that
21:06it's been a pretty tough struggle
21:08but I made it
21:10so what are you going to do
21:10for the Charlotte Hornets
21:11well I'm going to go in
21:12I'm going to basically
21:13Nike had a roster
21:15of the best athletes
21:17across a range of sports
21:19at that time
21:20they already had
21:22these commitments
21:23with other athletes
21:24and for Larry Johnson
21:26they were unable
21:27to make him
21:28the kind of promise
21:29that Converse
21:30could offer him
21:31Converse was in bankruptcy
21:36at the time
21:37Converse was an iconic brand
21:40but it was in free fall
21:41it was not seen as cool
21:44or fashionable
21:45or that the best athletes
21:46wore it
21:47it's hard
21:49to build a brand
21:51that sustains
21:52and it's almost impossible
21:54to bring a brand back
21:56Converse was run
21:59by a bunch
22:00of lovely
22:01six foot six
22:03white guys
22:03who all played
22:05college basketball
22:05and they
22:07deeply in their hearts
22:08believed that Nike
22:10was a fly-by-night
22:10organization
22:11and would go
22:12out of business
22:13they thought
22:15they knew
22:16the marketplace
22:17and they didn't
22:18and that's
22:20how I walked
22:20in the door
22:21I'm actually
22:23kind of shocked
22:23in retrospect
22:24that they hired me
22:25you know
22:26women were not
22:26usually hired
22:27also for those roles
22:28at the time
22:29and I knew nothing
22:30about basketball
22:31as a marketing person
22:32so I think
22:34I was a desperation move
22:35Weebuck and Nike
22:37were really
22:38at the forefront
22:39so for Larry Johnson
22:41Converse could
22:43legitimately go
22:44and say
22:44Larry you will
22:46be our guy
22:46Converse came
22:49to Rich and I
22:50my partner
22:50Rich Herstek
22:51they said
22:52hey we want
22:52to sign
22:53Larry Johnson
22:54they said
22:56we need some ideas
22:57to put him
22:57over the fence
22:58and get him
22:59out to Converse
22:59because he's
23:00the type of future
23:01that we want
23:02he got Reebok
23:05with streetball
23:06and Nike's
23:07kicking your ass
23:09every day
23:10so they needed
23:11some lightning bolts
23:12a month after
23:17I was drafted
23:18we was at Converse
23:19we went and sat down
23:22with the president
23:22and marketing people
23:24so I was like
23:26alright alright
23:27what y'all want to do
23:28they were like
23:30man not only
23:31we want to pay
23:31you a million dollars
23:32a year
23:32we want to put you
23:33in a commercial
23:33your first year
23:34I'm like what
23:35I was 21 at the time
23:37and their advertisement
23:38guys was my age
23:40or a little bit less
23:42I mean just some
23:42two young white guys
23:43they said man
23:45we got this idea
23:46for a commercial
23:47I'm like okay
23:48okay
23:48and they like
23:49I checked
23:49this commercial out
23:50we're gonna put you
23:52on a gurney
23:53we're gonna cover you up
23:54you can't be seen
23:55and Magic Johnson
23:57and Larry Bird
23:58is gonna be
23:58the doctors
23:59they're gonna be
24:00operating on it
24:01they asked for a scalpel
24:04all this old good stuff
24:05and after about 15-20 seconds
24:06they said
24:06ah we finished
24:07the perfect basketball player
24:09and then one of them
24:11said well we gotta name him
24:12Larry said
24:13well if we gonna name him
24:14his name gotta be Larry
24:15and Magic said
24:16no Johnson
24:17Larry
24:18Johnson
24:19Larry
24:19Johnson
24:20and then I raise up
24:21I never say a word
24:23I just raise up
24:24when they go back and forth
24:25for Larry Johnson

24:26I just raise up
24:27everybody see me
24:28into the commercial
24:30I'm like

24:33I signed that day
24:35I signed with Converse
24:36that day
24:37on everything
24:37they was telling me

24:40three or four days later
24:42I bought my mom a house
24:43with a million dollar bonus
24:44so it was gone
24:45three or four months later
24:46and I'm asking about
24:47these commercials
24:48I'm gonna call him
24:49what about that commercial
24:50what about that commercial
24:51like all Converse
24:52gonna get back with us
24:53they're gonna get back with us
24:54it would be easy to understand
24:57how a young man
24:58like Larry Johnson
24:59with so much talent
25:01he needed something
25:02out of the box
25:02to break through
25:04it was gonna be very hard
25:06to develop his own brand
25:08and so there was a ton
25:10of pressure on the team
25:11and on Pete and Rich
25:13and I'm sure they would tell you
25:16there were tons of storyboards
25:17they put in front of me
25:18that like I said no
25:20he went back to the drawing board
25:22so we got to work
25:27had a bunch of ideas
25:28it's for this new shoe
25:30called the Aero Glide
25:31and it was the lightest shoe
25:33that Converse ever made
25:34let's just play with the whole thing
25:37and it was a simple idea
25:38these shoes are so light
25:40and so fast
25:40my grandmother could beat you in them
25:42it's kind of going after Nike
25:45in a way
25:46with a bigger gun
25:47we got to be disruptive
25:48and weird
25:49we got to come out of left field
25:50taking this huge basketball player
25:56and putting him in
25:57a dress
25:58granny glasses
25:59it was pretty out of the box
26:01and it was pretty risky
26:02and for Larry Johnson
26:05it would be easy
26:06to have him
26:07completely
26:08throw that idea
26:09out the door
26:10they said
26:12Pete
26:12you're going to go to sell
26:14to Larry Johnson
26:14I was like
26:15well what do you mean
26:15there's always a business person
26:17with me
26:17there's always an account guy
26:19there's always like
26:20three or four people
26:21this time it's like

26:23when I got on set
26:26for the commercial
26:27I'm looking around
26:28for Larry
26:28imagine
26:29when Larry Johnson
26:30going to get here
26:30when we're doing this at
26:31when I get to the trailer
26:33I see an old dress
26:34hanging up with
26:35with a wig
26:38an old wig
26:39and I'm like
26:40oh who's wearing all this
26:41why is this in my trailer
26:42he comes over
26:44hey nice to meet you
26:45how you doing
26:46I was like
26:47wow he's a lot bigger
26:48in person
26:49so I said
26:50hey Larry
26:51I want to take you
26:52through the creative idea
26:53I said
26:54these new shoes
26:56are so light
26:56and so fast
26:57that your grandmother
26:59can beat the crap
27:00out of anybody
27:01in the NBA
27:01you're going to play
27:03your grandmother
27:04we are going to
27:06dress you up
27:07like this
27:08and he looks at it
27:10and there's this
27:11total pause
27:13I said to them then
27:15I said man
27:15if I had that million dollars
27:16I'd give it back to y'all
27:17I'm like
27:18oh y'all killing me man
27:19y'all killing
27:20I'm like
27:20y'all want me to put this on
27:21and go out here and dump
27:22they're like
27:23yeah man
27:24the first shoot we did
27:28we did it in Dallas, Texas
27:29so my mom was there
27:31so now I'm walking out
27:33looking like this
27:34she's having a ball
27:35she's chuckling so much
27:36you'd have thought
27:37I was Richard Pryor
27:38the way she was
27:38busting the gut
27:39action
27:41they're so light
27:42and so fast
27:43my grandma
27:44can whoop you in them
27:45working with Larry
27:47to kind of develop
27:49the persona
27:49of grandma
27:50is really
27:51really hard
27:52well Larry's
27:54a really
27:54really nice guy
27:55and they got
27:56through that day
27:57it was a weekend
27:59it was a Saturday
28:00and
28:01my page
28:02went off
28:02and so I called
28:08and was told
28:10that Magic had just
28:12found out he was
28:13HIV positive
28:14and he was reaching out
28:16to ask his sponsors
28:17if they were going to
28:18support him or not
28:19hurry up
28:20please
28:21at the time
28:23HIV was thought
28:24to only happen
28:25for people
28:26who were gay
28:27the fact that
28:29the star athlete
28:31could contract AIDS
28:32was unfathomable
28:33there was a ton
28:34of fear
28:35you know
28:35it was
28:36shocking at the time
28:38and devastating
28:39first of all
28:41let me say
28:41good afternoon

28:42late afternoon
28:43because of
28:46the HIV virus
28:50that I have
28:50attained
28:51I will
28:53have to retire
28:54from the Lakers
28:55today
28:57I remember
29:00I was shocked
29:01first of all
29:02and I thought
29:04oh my god
29:04this is
29:05somebody who's
29:06an athlete
29:08on the
29:09gigantic stage
29:10that he was on
29:11and Larry
29:13was suffering
29:13from back issues
29:14too
29:15so Converse
29:17was looking
29:17at their two
29:18pillars
29:19Larry Bird
29:20and Magic Johnson
