Transcript
00:00This story was set in Jackson, Mississippi, United States.
00:12This woman was Abilene Clark, and she worked in the house of a woman named Elizabeth Leifolt,
00:18a young mother who didn't seem to care about her small child,
00:21as it could be seen that almost all the housework, from cleaning up to caring for the child,
00:26was done by Abilene while she spent her time with her friends.
00:30Proven when she planned to invite her friends to come to the house to play cards that afternoon.
00:35Meanwhile, there was another maid named Minnie Jackson,
00:38an amazing cook who worked in the house of a woman named Hilly Holbrook.
00:42Hilly herself was the friend of Elizabeth who was invited to play cards,
00:46and she brought her mother and Minnie there.
00:48Somewhere else, there was also a woman named Skeeter Phelan who had just graduated from the University of Mississippi.
00:54She aspired to be a writer, but at that time,
00:56she could only get a job writing a cleaning advice column at the Jackson Journal newspaper office.
01:02That afternoon, she was on her way to Elizabeth's house to play cards,
01:05as Elizabeth, who turned out to be her childhood friend, had invited her,
01:09along with another friend of hers named Jolene.
01:12During the game, Skeeter was a bit bothered seeing how her friends treated their maids, who were black women.
01:17At that moment, Hilly was busy telling how annoyed she was when she found out that Minnie often used her house as toilet
01:24and said that black people carry different diseases from white people.
01:28Skeeter got even more bothered when she heard that Hilly said she was initiating a law
01:33that required every white household to have a separate toilet for their black maids.
01:38Hilly then told Skeeter, who worked at the newspaper, to publish her article.
01:42After the event was over, Skeeter invited Ibeline to help with her job,
01:46and also apologized for what her friends had said earlier.
01:50At that moment, Skeeter revealed that she used to have a black maid named Constantine,
01:55who suddenly quit her job at one point.
01:57She then told Ibeline that she wanted to know what happened,
02:00so she asked Ibeline for help to find Constantine's contact.
02:03Skeeter had tried asking her mother about it, but her mother always changed the subject.
02:07Skeeter didn't give up finding information yet, so during dinner with her family,
02:11she asked her father the same thing about Constantine,
02:14and her father said that Constantine quit,
02:16because she wanted to move to Chicago to live with her family.
02:19But Skeeter was not satisfied with her father's answer,
02:22so she cornered her mother by guessing that her mother must have fired Constantine,
02:27and she immediately showed that she was against it,
02:29because Constantine had worked for 30 years in their house.
02:32She deeply loved Constantine, because the maid was the one who raised her when she was little.
02:37She was even closer emotionally to Constantine than she was to her own mother.
02:41Even though Constantine was nothing more than her babysitter,
02:44she played more of a parental role than Skeeter's own parent.
02:48One morning, an idea crossed Skeeter's mind.
02:51She suddenly called a publisher named Elaine,
02:53and said that she wanted to write a book from the perspective of the maids in the South.
02:58She explained that these black women had raised white children to be successful people in society.
03:03Yet the irony was that they could not even use the same toilet in the house.
03:08Upon hearing that, Elaine admitted that this was an angle she had never heard of,
03:12and she warned that no one would help or want to talk for her research,
03:16especially since this was Mississippi, and segregation was still going strong there.
03:20But Skeeter insisted that she already had a maid who would talk to her,
03:24so Elaine agreed and would wait for a draft from her.
03:27Upon hearing that, Skeeter was, of course, very happy.
03:30Some other day, after Ibeline helped Skeeter with the cleaning column,
03:33Skeeter brought up her idea about interviewing black maids who worked in white people's homes
03:38to find out about their experiences, what they felt, how much they were paid, and so on.
03:43But Ibeline said it was impossible for her to tell everything about her employers.
03:48However, Skeeter countered by saying that they could tell their stories anonymously,
03:53so that their identities remained secret.
03:55Unfortunately, their conversation was cut short when Elizabeth suddenly came in with her husband.
04:00One day, a tornado hit Mississippi, and the electricity there went out because of the strong winds.
04:06At that moment, Minnie, who usually went to the bathroom outside,
04:09at that time needed to go pee and wanted to ask permission from Hilly to use the indoor toilet
04:14since the storm was brewing strongly outside, but she quickly backed down.
04:19However, seeing Minnie's strange behavior,
04:21Hilly's mother knew what was happening and told Minnie to use the toilet in the house.
04:26Unfortunately, Hilly forbade her and said that the rain outside was not that heavy,
04:31even though she knew the weather outside was clearly not good.
04:35Then, just when Minnie excused herself to go inside to make tea,
04:39Hilly became suspicious and went to the toilet,
04:41thinking Minnie was lying to her so she could use the toilet,
04:44and as she expected, Minnie indeed used the toilet and had just finished her business.
04:49Because of that, Minnie was fired, and she had to leave the house right away,
04:53even though it was stormy outside.
04:55Meanwhile, at Elizabeth's house,
04:57Abilene now had her own toilet, and it was outside the house.
05:00Elizabeth made Abilene her own toilet because she believed Hilly's claim
05:04about the disease that the black people brought.
05:07At that time, Elizabeth, as usual, left her young daughter, May, with Abilene,
05:12and it was clear that May loved being with Abilene and was even closer to her than to her own mother.
05:18She even called Abilene her real mother.
05:21One morning, when she was going to take the bus home,
05:24Skeeter came to Abilene again and asked about her interview offer for the book she wanted to write,
05:29but Abilene still refused it.
05:30She was too scared to open her mouth.
05:32She explained that her cousin's car was even burned down
05:36just because he went to the polling station to vote in the election,
05:39showing that when black people tried to express their minds, they would be harmed.
05:44She worried that if she spoke out, her house might be burned down too.
05:49Upon hearing that, Skeeter understood the fear
05:51and instead gave her number to Abilene in case she might change her mind.
05:55The fear that Abilene experienced was not without reason.
05:58It was stated in the Mississippi Regional Regulations.
06:01Black people were not allowed to have the same rights as white people.
06:05Black people were not allowed to be in the same room as white people.
06:09They were not allowed to have the same books at school as white people.
06:13In salons and other public places, even public toilets, they were segregated.
06:17The worst part was that there should be no books or writings
06:20that supported the equality of the black race over white people.
06:24That was why Abilene refused Skeeter's offer.
06:26One night, Abilene got a call from Minnie,
06:29telling her that after being fired by Hilly,
06:31she went to Hilly's house the next afternoon with a pie to apologize.
06:34But the real reason she did that was for revenge,
06:37because Hilly was spreading gossip about her being a thief.
06:40Minnie didn't want to say exactly how she got revenge,
06:43but she made it clear that Hilly deserved it.
06:45The other day, Abilene felt enlightened after listening to the pastor's sermon at church.
06:50The pastor preached that as humans,
06:52everyone must be prepared to put themselves in danger for other fellow human beings,
06:57just as Jesus did.
06:58That sermon changed her decision, and she decided to help Skeeter with her writing.
07:03She then called Skeeter to come to her house in secret,
07:06so that no one would know about it.
07:08In short, the interview finally began.
07:11Skeeter asked several questions, but on that day,
07:13Abilene chose to read her story to Skeeter instead,
07:16because every day she wrote her story down in a book as a prayer.
07:20Skeeter also asked if there were other maids who wanted to tell their story,
07:24but Abilene said it might be difficult right now,
07:26especially for Minnie, who had just been fired and was still mad.
07:31Meanwhile, at Hilly's house, another maid named Yule May was working to replace Minnie.
07:36That morning, she tried to borrow money from Hilly for the education costs of her twin sons
07:40who wanted to go to college.
07:42She could actually send one of them to college with her own money,
07:45but she wanted both to get the same degree,
07:47so she dared herself to borrow money from Hilly.
07:50Unfortunately, instead of helping by lending Yule May some money,
07:54Hilly coldly told her to try and earn it.
07:56On the other hand, to help her husband pay the bills,
07:59Minnie was forced to drop her child out of school
08:01so she could work as a maid and help with their family's economy.
08:05She also taught her child what to do and what not to do when working with white people.
08:10Minnie, on the other hand, had to go through her days without a job
08:13until one day she got a recommendation from a white woman who refused to believe Hilly's gossip,
08:19and the woman was Celia.
08:21For years, Minnie had lived as a maid with rules and boundaries between black and white people,
08:25but Celia actually didn't care about that at all.
08:29She truly welcomed Minnie's arrival with a hug,
08:31because this was the first time she had ever hired a maid.
08:36She said that she wanted Minnie to work only from 9 o'clock a.m. to 4 o'clock a.m.
08:40because she didn't want her husband to know that there was a maid at home.
08:44As she just wanted her husband to think, she did the chores herself.
08:47Upon hearing that, Minnie agreed to these conditions.
08:50On another day, Hilly held a meeting at her house and announced that her initiative about
08:54the separation of toilets for maids had reached the governor.
08:58She then asked about the article about her initiative to Skeeter,
09:01who should have been published in the newspaper a month ago.
09:04Faced with that question, Skeeter only said that it would be published as soon as possible.
09:09After that meeting, Hilly, Elizabeth, and Skeeter went together to a cafe.
09:13When they got there, Hilly said that she would set up Skeeter with a man named Stuart,
09:17because, among the three of them, only Skeeter was not married,
09:21so she and Elizabeth made plans for her date with Stuart.
09:24Meanwhile, at Hilly's house, while cleaning,
09:26Yule May accidentally found a gold ring under the sofa.
09:29Driven by her dire need for money, she then pocketed the ring.
09:33Meanwhile, Skeeter still met Ibeline from time to time to get her story done.
09:37One day, Ibeline told Skeeter that she wanted to talk about May,
09:41Elizabeth's child, who slept with her diaper every night,
09:44and it would not be changed until Ibeline arrived home in the morning,
09:48no matter the condition, meaning the poor child might have slept with her feces all night.
09:53Upon hearing this, Skeeter became even more determined to write the book.
09:57Soon, while they were talking, Minnie suddenly came over and was shocked to see Skeeter there,
10:02as she was still sentimental about white people,
10:05and suspected Skeeter of only pretending to care about their race.
10:09However, Skeeter said that she just wanted people to know what they felt.
10:14Ibeline then told Skeeter that she didn't have to explain herself to Minnie.
10:18Upon hearing that, Minnie got irritated and quickly left.
10:20But when she was outside, she suddenly changed her mind and went back in,
10:25and finally agreed to join Skeeter's project.
10:27At first, Minnie wasn't friendly, but when she was invited to talk about cooking,
10:31like what she did every day, she couldn't stop talking.
10:33Especially if it was related to Hilly, her former employer.
10:36They chatted until morning, and Minnie even suggested that they should invite other maids to join.
10:42Upon hearing that suggestion, Skeeter decided she would try to talk to them.
10:45On another occasion, Skeeter came to a restaurant to meet Stuart,
10:49the man introduced by Hilly and her husband.
10:51However, that date didn't end well because Stuart was fighting with someone
10:54and was a bit rude in his speech, leading to Skeeter leaving right away.
11:00Meanwhile, Minnie was getting more comfortable working without any pressure at Celia's house.
11:04She even taught Celia a lot about how to cook, and Celia was genuinely excited because of it.
11:09At the same time, Celia didn't even mind eating at the same table as Minnie,
11:13even though Minnie tried to tell Celia to eat at her own dining table.
11:17Later, Minnie reminded Celia to tell her husband about her,
11:20worried that her husband would shoot her dead if he found out by surprise.
11:24On the other hand, Skeeter often discussed the draft of the book she sent to Elaine in New York on a call.
11:29That one night, during the call, Elaine said that the stories of these two maids were still not enough.
11:36She said that at the very least, Skeeter should have a dozen maids who wanted to be interviewed.
11:40Then, after the call, Skeeter brought this up to Minnie and Ibeline.
11:44Minnie then said that she had invited about 30 other friends,
11:47but they were all scared and thought this was a crazy idea and too dangerous.
11:52Without enough people to interview, her book would never make it,
11:55so Skeeter was clearly nervous, but Ibeline encouraged her not to give up.
12:00She suddenly told Skeeter the tragic story of how her only child died.
12:04She told Skeeter that her child was hit by a car when he was carrying goods to the factory.
12:08The foreman where he worked then took him to the hospital by putting him in the back of a truck,
12:13and when they arrived, the foreman just put him down and then left.
12:17Unfortunately, there was nothing the hospital could do,
12:19so he was taken home and died at home, right in front of Ibeline's eyes.
12:23She then said that if Skeeter gave up, all they had written all this time would be gone, like her son.
12:30Days later on Sunday, Hilly held a party at her house, and as usual, everyone was present.
12:35On that occasion, Skeeter approached Yule May, who was washing dishes in the kitchen,
12:39and offered her an interview just like Ibeline and Minnie.
12:42But Yule May said that right now, her only focus was on getting money for her sons to go to college,
12:48so she couldn't join.
12:49Soon after, Hilly came in, and fortunately, there was no important conversation
12:53that came out of their mouths about the interview.
12:56Hilly then asked Skeeter if she was deliberately delaying publishing her article in the newspaper,
13:00but Skeeter quickly said that she was just busy taking care of her sick mother.
13:05The other day, Skeeter was woken up by her mother because Stuart, the man she met last week,
13:10had come back to see her to apologize and invite her to go on another date.
13:13So, they eventually had dinner.
13:15At that moment, Stuart told Skeeter that he had read all of her articles in the newspaper,
13:20and said that she was talented as a writer.
13:22He then said that whenever she wanted to write something, she had to write what she believed,
13:26and then he hoped that she would write something good.
13:29Eventually, Skeeter finally decided to work on Hilly's article about the separate toilets.
13:33However, when making the ah layout, she deliberately changed the words in the article to something else,
13:38and by the time the article was published, Hilly's garden was filled with old, unused toilets,
13:44sent there by people who followed the article's bizarre instructions.
13:47Hilly soon found out that this was thanks to Skeeter's article, and this became the beginning of their feud.
13:54At that time, Hilly saw May using one of the toilets at the yard, and that made her angry,
13:59and she immediately beat her in public.
14:01After that incident, Ibeline quickly calmed May down and tried to cheer her up.
14:05Meanwhile, at her house, Skeeter and her two maids watched the national news about a black activist named Medgar Evers,
14:13who dared to give a speech about fighting for black people's civil rights.
14:17Later that day, when Ibeline was on her way home using the bus,
14:20the driver suddenly stopped the bus and asked the black people on the bus to get off,
14:25because in front of them, there was a shooting incident that caused a black person to be shot dead.
14:29When it was checked, the person turned out to be Medgar Evers, who was shot by a white citizen.
14:35Afraid the same thing might happen to her, Ibeline quickly ran back home.
14:39On her way home, Ibeline stopped by Minnie's house.
14:41Minnie was clearly worried about what would happen to them if they were caught working with Skeeter
14:45to make a book about the segregation.
14:47Seeing how scared her friend was, Ibeline tried to calm her down by saying that they would be more careful.
14:52They would only tell Skeeter about their own experiences
14:54instead of fighting for civil rights to try to minimize the risk.
14:59One day, when working at Celia's house, Minnie suddenly heard a desperate voice from upstairs,
15:04so she quickly checked on Celia in her room.
15:06When she entered the room from the bathroom, Celia desperately told Minnie to just go home.
15:12But she wasn't going to let her kind employer cry, so she broke down the door
15:16and discovered that Celia had just had a miscarriage.
15:19Seeing the urgency, Minnie tried her best to comfort her,
15:22telling her that her next pregnancy would definitely be successful,
15:26and that she would eventually have a baby.
15:27On the other hand, when Yulmay had just gotten off the bus,
15:31she was suddenly arrested by the police on charges of theft.
15:34It turned out that it was clear that Hilly was the one who had reported it,
15:38because she caught Yulmay pawning her missing ring at the pawn shop.
15:41After Yulmay's arrest incident, Skeeter was suddenly called by Ibeline to come to her house,
15:45and when she arrived, she was shocked that there were already dozens of maids besides Minnie and Ibeline
15:51there waiting for her.
15:51It turned out that the incident of Yulmay's arrest had finally changed their minds,
15:56and they were now willing to tell Skeeter their stories for her book.
16:00They then began telling their stories, and from them, Skeeter found out that not all white people were like Hilly.
16:06Some were kind and treated them like human beings.
16:10After receiving a lot of information, Skeeter immediately sped up the writing process to meet the deadline given by Elaine.
16:16Elaine had also told Skeeter to put something personal in the book, namely, the story of Constantine, the maid who raised Skeeter.
16:24On another day, Celia showed up at Elizabeth's house with a pie, where Elizabeth happened to be hanging out with her friends.
16:30When Hilly knew that Celia was coming, she immediately told everyone there to hide and ignore Celia at all,
16:36which clearly hurt Celia's feelings.
16:38Later, at Celia's house, Minnie told Celia that Hilly hated her,
16:42because she married her ex-boyfriend Johnny, thinking that Celia stole Johnny from her,
16:47leading to their breakup, even though Celia had never done that.
16:50On that occasion, Celia noticed that there was a wound on Minnie's temple,
16:54and she immediately knew that Minnie was a victim of domestic violence, so she tried to treat her wound.
16:59Seeing how careful Celia at her, Minnie realized that only in this house was a maid treated like a human being,
17:06not as a slave.
17:07In short, because the segregation was getting more chaotic, Skeeter, Abelene, and Minnie held a meeting.
17:13They were worried about what problems they would face if their identities in the book were found out,
17:18and what problems were waiting for them.
17:20So, in case that happened in the future, Minnie said that she needed guarantees that they would be out of trouble.
17:26It was then that Minnie shared her biggest secret.
17:29She said that after she was fired, she gave a homemade chocolate pie to Hilly,
17:33which she ate greedily, eating two pieces of.
17:35She then told Minnie that she could accept her back, but her salary would be deducted every week.
17:41At that moment, Hilly's mother also wanted a piece of the cake, but Minnie stopped her from eating it.
17:46Hearing how dare the maid before her was, Hilly rudely told Minnie to cut the cake for her mother.
17:52It was then that Minnie finally opened up about the secret recipe of that chocolate pie.
17:56She revealed that she had baked her own feces into the pie.
18:01Mama can have a piece.
18:02What'd you say?
18:03Eat my shit.
18:06Because you just did.
18:11Run, Dave! Run!
18:15This fact stunned Abelene and Skeeter to the point of disbelief.
18:20Minnie added that Hilly's mother, who had laughed at her own daughter, also got her consequence.
18:27After the incident that day, Hilly sent her mother to a nursing home.
18:31Minnie then said that if this story was included, it would be a guarantee of their safety.
18:36When she saw the embarrassing news, Hilly would desperately cover up that this story was not from Jackson, Mississippi,
18:42because there was no way she would want to confirm that she had willingly eaten Minnie's feces.
18:46However, Abelene and Skeeter still didn't agree.
18:50Faced with that refusal, Minnie then gave them an ultimatum.
18:53Either they added that story, or she would withdraw from the project.
18:57One day, at a fundraising event that was being organized by Hilly and her friends, Celia showed up.
19:03She was there to clarify, as she had told Minnie before, that she and Johnny got married after he broke up with Hilly.
19:09Not because she had stolen him.
19:11However, because she drank too much.
19:14Celia vomited at the event and then quickly left with Johnny.
19:18Hilly's mother, who also came to the event, then replied to what her daughter had done to her.
19:22She brought the chocolate pie made by Minnie and told Hilly that she was clearly still upset because she had sent her there.
19:29The next day after the event, Celia told Minnie that this kind of life was not suitable for her.
19:34So she had decided to return to her village and leave her husband.
19:37Seeing the sadness in Celia's eyes to entertain her, Minnie finally told the whole story of the awful chocolate pie that Hilly ate.
19:46She then added that if she left Johnny, then Hilly would win over all of them, because that was what she wanted all along for Celia to leave.
19:53Long story short, the 266-page novel draft Skeeter wrote was finally finished.
19:59But Skeeter said she still had one more story that had not been included, namely the story of Constantine, her missing maid.
20:07So, once again, she asked her mother what exactly had happened and how Constantine had stopped working for them after two decades.
20:14Her mother finally told the complete story.
20:17Back then, when her mother was elected chairperson of a women's organization for Jackson, Mississippi,
20:22the inauguration dinner was held at their house and was attended directly by the head of the central organization.
20:27During the dinner, Constantine's daughter Rachel came to visit her mother, but because she was embarrassed,
20:33Skeeter's mother told Rachel to go in through the back door.
20:36Regardless of what she was told, Rachel still went in through the front door to meet her mother.
20:41Unfortunately, the incident was considered impolite by the white guests, and Skeeter's mother was punished for such action.
20:48In the end, because of the encouragement of her friends, Skeeter's mother felt that she had no choice but to kick Constantine out of the house.
20:56Upon listening to the story, Skeeter was incredibly sad that her mother had treated Constantine like that.
21:01Skeeter's mother then continued her story.
21:04After she kicked Constantine out of the house, she said that she had tried to go to Constantine's house,
21:09but Constantine had already gone to Chicago to be with her family.
21:12She had even followed Constantine to Chicago to bring her back.
21:16But unfortunately, it was too late, because Constantine had already died.
21:20To know that such a horrible thing happened to Constantine, Skeeter was sad, because it was through her that she learned many things.
21:26She was raised and taught about the value of life by black people, who were only called maids.
21:32Long story short, Elaine finally published the book Skeeter wrote from New York.
21:36The book was titled The Help.
21:38The author and the source of the stories in the book were, of course, disguised for security.
21:44Thousands of copies were soon released, even making it all the way to Mississippi.
21:48The royalty money was shared with Minnie, Ibeline, and dozens of other maids who had shared their stories.
21:54Hilly's mother, who was in the nursing home, also read the book to the other elderly people,
21:59and she was shocked when she read the story about the revenge pie.
22:02She immediately realized and was sure that it was Minnie's story.
22:06That very night, she immediately called Hilly and told her there was a good book that she had to read,
22:11without telling her what it was about.
22:13The other day, when at the supermarket, Ibeline and Minnie couldn't believe that someone was reading their book.
22:18Especially since the person reading it was a white person.
22:21Seeing that, they were happy, but they also started to get nervous.
22:25Unfortunately, this success became the end of Skeeter's relationship with Stuart.
22:29What Skeeter wrote, even though he was the one who encouraged her to write what she believed in,
22:33was now the opposite of what he wanted.
22:36Meanwhile, this book suddenly went viral and was read by all black and white people,
22:40all curious about the contents of the book, including Hilly.
22:43And just as Minnie had thought, Hilly would desperately deny that the book was about a maid in Mississippi.
22:50One morning, Hilly received a check from Celia.
22:53At first, she was happy because she thought she had received a donation.
22:56But it turned out, the check was an inside joke from Celia regarding the toilet revenge.
23:02Not accepting all of this, she furiously went to Skeeter's house and immediately said that she would sue her,
23:07because she had already hired a lawyer.
23:08But Skeeter said that until she could prove anything, the book was safe.
23:13Even though Hilly was certain it was she who wrote the book.
23:16Desperate for revenge, Hilly told Skeeter's mother about this,
23:19but unexpectedly, Skeeter's mother defended her daughter,
23:22which made Hilly unable to say anything but swallow her annoyance.
23:26Because of the book's success, Elaine wrote a letter to Skeeter,
23:29offering her a job as a junior editor at her company,
23:32meaning that she would have to move to New York.
23:35When Skeeter talked about it with her mother, she got support from her mother,
23:38who was proud that she had grown into a brave woman.
23:41Meanwhile, one day, when Minnie returned from shopping,
23:44Johnny, Celia's husband, unexpectedly came home that afternoon.
23:48Minnie immediately ran to call Celia asking for help,
23:51worried that Johnny would kill her, even though Johnny had no intention of hurting her at all.
23:55In fact, he was grateful because Minnie was his wife's friend.
23:59And with Minnie's help, Celia's condition was getting better.
24:02According to him, Minnie had saved his wife's life.
24:05He then invited Minnie inside.
24:07Upon entering the house, Minnie was surprised because Celia had prepared a special meal for her.
24:13It was the food she had cooked herself since early morning as a token of gratitude.
24:17Upon seeing that, Minnie thought that she would be fired.
24:20But instead, Johnny said that she could work in that house for the rest of her life.
24:24Minnie was so happy, especially after Johnny and Celia promised to treat her as a friend
24:29and not just a maid.
24:31Because of this job, she could finally bring all her children away from her husband,
24:35who was abusive, and start a new life.
24:37When Sunday came, Abilene went to church, only to be surprised because when she entered,
24:42everyone had gathered and clapped for her.
24:45They thanked her for what she had done.
24:47Everyone then signed the book as a sign of gratitude for Abilene.
24:51On the other hand, Skeeter was moved to see the book finally become something useful for Minnie.
24:55On that occasion, she told Abilene and Minnie about the job offer in New York,
25:00but she planned to refuse the offer because she was worried about their safety after what they had done.
25:05But Minnie and Abilene told her to go because they would look after each other.
25:09They insisted that she should look for a better life in New York.
25:12Another day, when she came to work, Abilene was called by Hilly, who was at Elizabeth's house that morning.
25:17She then accused Abilene of stealing the utensils that she had lent to Elizabeth.
25:21Of course, this was a false accusation, and Elizabeth looked reluctant to carry out this plan.
25:26Hilly even told Abilene that she was fired.
25:29She knew that she could not put Abilene in jail because of the book,
25:32but she could put her in jail with a theft case.
25:34Annoyed with all of this, Abilene finally put up a full fight.
25:37She loudly shouted and gave Hilly a stern look, and that made Hilly stunned and speechless.
25:43After years of working there, Abilene finally decided to leave.
25:47May was truly sad because of her departure.
25:49She became the last child Abilene had cared for, because after this, she chose to retire.
25:54Oh, the fields still whisper their stories
25:58Of the hearts that never knew peace
26:01Of the voices buried in shadows
26:05Begging for the nightmare to cease
26:08Every tear that hit the ground
