00:00Hello, everybody. Welcome to WhatCultureStarWars. I'm Joe Johnston, WhatCulture's resident guy who looks a little bit like an out-of-shape Obi-Wan Kenobi, joined by Dan Durkin.
00:10Hello there.
00:11And it's 45 years to the day since Star Wars first appeared in theaters and everyone got to see Obi-Wan Kenobi for the first time.
00:19So we are going to talk about Obi-Wan Kenobi, the first two episodes which aired today on Disney+.
00:25And what did you think, Dan Durkin?
00:28To be honest, I loved it. I thought it was great. I mean, I'm a fan of the prequels and I'm a fan of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan.
00:37So, like, it's just music to my ears. What about you?
00:41Great, I like that. I liked it as well. I had a really good time with it.
00:46I'm not a huge fan of the prequels. When the first one came out, when episode one came out, I was the perfect age to really, really love that film.
00:55I saw it in the cinema. I thought it was fantastic.
00:58I think I was four. Yeah, my dad took us to see it. I was four. I think I fell asleep.
01:02Oh, wow. See, I was nine. So I was the exact age to just love all that action.
01:08The other two prequels, by that point, I was checked out of them. I was old enough by episode two to be aware of the fact that it wasn't great.
01:18But Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi was always a highlight of those films. There's plenty of other things to like about those prequel films.
01:26You know, don't get me wrong, but Ewan McGregor was fantastic in them.
01:29I think that's a shared opinion, like amongst all of Star Wars fans. Yeah. So that brings us to Obi-Wan.
01:35We got a really nice little montage. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
01:38We ran through all the prequels, got a bit of a catch up because, you know, for someone like me who hasn't seen them in years and years and years, it was nice to go, ah, yes, okay.
01:48There we go. Now we're up to speed. It was good. It was very sad. It had this real nice kind of tragic opening.
01:53Yeah. And with a little tease from Yoda saying, I will teach you to commune with your old master.
01:59So, we'll get back to that one. We'll definitely get back to that one.
02:03And then, of course, Order 66. What do you think of that?
02:07It's great. It's great to just see that again from a different perspective.
02:11It's just brutal, like seeing the Jedi get slaughtered.
02:14Yeah.
02:16And it's also interesting seeing the younglings.
02:19I've got a feeling that's going to come back and tie into the whole Inquisitor thing.
02:23Oh, yeah, okay. Similar thoughts to me there.
02:25But we'll get more on that in our predictions segment.
02:31Yeah, I like seeing Order 66 there. They're going in on it a little bit, aren't they?
02:36Because we saw a little bit of it in the Book of Boba Fett when little Grogu was having his flashback to it.
02:42And it was brutal then as well.
02:44And, you know, I'm not one of these people who's really desperate to see an entire series about Anakin slaughtering everyone in the Jedi Temple,
02:51which is a weird thing that people seem to be clamoring for.
02:54But, you know, just another look at it, just to really play up that brutality is quite nice.
02:59Different perspectives.
03:00Yeah, definitely. And it is. The tragedy of it is very good.
03:03And it leads really nicely into where Obi-Wan has settled, of course, on...
03:08Tatooine.
03:08Tatooine.
03:09As soon as I saw Tatooine, I thought, I need more of this desert planet.
03:15But, I mean, you need it really, don't you?
03:17Because it's...
03:18That's where he is. That's where Luke is.
03:21That's where Luke is. That's where Obi-Wan is.
03:22So, yeah, all right, I can forgive that.
03:24It's fine. Perfectly decent starting point.
03:27So, it starts with the Inquisitors on Tatooine looking for a Jedi.
03:32Obviously, this isn't Obi-Wan.
03:34Yeah, yeah.
03:35We'll come and find that out.
03:36But, yeah, there's more Jedi out there.
03:38Like, how do you feel about that?
03:40I like it. I mean, I think we knew that was going to be the case.
03:44But this is just a nice little bait and switch, which works a bit of development for Obi-Wan.
03:49Yeah.
03:49And, you know, the three Inquisitors turn up at that point.
03:52We've got Rupert Friend as the Grand Inquisitor comes in.
03:56And he's, I really like him.
03:59He's sinister, but sort of camp enough for it to still be quite fun.
04:03Yeah, it works.
04:04It works.
04:04Kind of chewing the scenery.
04:05And then Reva, or Reva, who is...
04:08Yeah, the third sister.
04:09The third sister.
04:10Who's violent and impulsive and ready to just hack anyone to bits.
04:15But, yes, Rupert Friend's speech is all about how you coax them out by getting them to show their compassion.
04:22Because the Jedi can't help it.
04:24And there's this hooded guy in the corner who, you know, when Reva throws the knife and stops it, you think, oh, there's Obi-Wan.
04:33And it's not.
04:33It's not.
04:34It's not.
04:35It's just some guy.
04:36Yeah.
04:36Young guy.
04:37They do a very good job of setting up the tension and the stakes.
04:40Because I think, like, something about the series is just, it's more cinematic than Boba Fett was, like, in my opinion.
04:46Significantly more so, yeah.
04:47I think Deborah Chow's directing is incredible.
04:51Another thing, actually, is the cinematography itself.
04:54The entire series is shot by Chung Hoon Chung.
04:56Right.
04:56Who's a South Korean cinematographer who has worked on all kinds of things.
05:01Especially with Park Chan-wook, who directed Old Boy and many other films.
05:06And Old Boy is one of the most fantastic-looking films.
05:08Yeah.
05:09Most visually, like, gorgeous films out there.
05:12And it really shows here the cinematography's got real crap to it.
05:15I think just with these two episodes, like, this is the best Star Wars has looked on TV, like, in my opinion.
05:22Oh, without a doubt, yeah.
05:23It's all shot in the volume as well, isn't it?
05:25From what I gather, yeah.
05:26And that gets better every time.
05:28It's, you know, the first season of The Mandalorian, as good as it looked, it even still looked a little flat then.
05:34And they're just really, they're getting that technology to work incredibly well.
05:37You do forget that they're shooting on a volume.
05:39It's got to be better for the actors as well.
05:41Not working on the green screen and the blue screen, like, it enhances the performances.
05:46Yeah.
05:47And on that, we'll go to old Ben Kenobi.
05:52Is he a butcher?
05:55He's just there cutting his meat?
05:56I was thinking, like, what's he doing here?
05:59Is he counted as a butcher or is this a sort of factory worker?
06:01Because there's some kind of refinery that's cutting apart this giant, like a big space manta ray, wasn't it?
06:08I guess so, yeah.
06:08And there he is, and he's working on this little production line, and he's cutting all these little cubes of meat.
06:13I couldn't tell.
06:14When he puts meat in his pocket, is that, like, his ration, or is he skimming off the top?
06:18I think he's stealing it for his space camel thing.
06:21I can't remember the name of that because he feeds it at that.
06:24That's right.
06:25It just shows him in routine, like, he's stuck on this planet, and he's just living his life, just miserably.
06:34And, of course, the guy in the front of him in the line goes to take his pay, and he says, hey, this is less than half.
06:40I've got a family, and this is the point where everyone could show compassion.
06:43I was half expecting him to, oh, take mine, I don't need material things, I don't need money, but nope, that didn't happen.
06:49He's good at hiding.
06:50Yeah.
06:50He's very good at hiding.
06:52And that comes to play later on as well.
06:54Of course, yeah.
06:55Well, it really does, doesn't it?
06:57Yeah.
06:58Where do we go after we've seen Obi-Wan there?
07:00He goes back to his cave.
07:02He goes back to his cave, his little ring doorbell thing.
07:04Yeah.
07:04Then you've got the Jawa there who's selling them, like, scraps and stuff like that, and we see the little ship that Luke's playing with in episode four.
07:16I've got it written down, what it's called, the T-16 Skyhopper.
07:20That's the one.
07:21So you learn something new about Star Wars every day, if you didn't already know that.
07:24Names of ships.
07:25Yeah.
07:25Always being forgotten and relearned.
07:27But then later on, Obi-Wan goes to see Luke.
07:31So he's, like, spying on him.
07:32It was a shot in the trailer.
07:33Yeah, that's right.
07:34Yeah, he's working outside with Owen, isn't he?
07:37Yeah.
07:38And you see him, he's looking through the binoculars, and there's a really nice touch is that as soon as he goes out of Owen's sight, you can tell that Owen gets panicked and starts calling for him.
07:47Even though he's literally, he's around the other side of the hood, sitting on the top, pretending to be a pilot.
07:52And Owen is immediately terrified.
07:54I think that really sets up the stakes and kind of his duty to protect him really, really well.
07:59And presumably, has Obi-Wan snuck him the Skyhopper?
08:07So he drops it off a little bit later on when it gets dark, and Obi-Wan drops it off.
08:11And I'm pretty sure, like, Owen brings it up.
08:14You can't be doing this, pretty much.
08:17Because it's, he makes a good point, like, Luke's supposed to be out of the way of the Empire.
08:23That's right, yeah.
08:24Obi-Wan shouldn't be doing this.
08:25No, he's got too much of an attachment to this kid, hasn't he?
08:28Yeah.
08:28And of course, so much of an attachment that he says, hey, when he's ready, the boy must be trained.
08:33And as we saw in the trailer, Owen absolutely ends him there.
08:39Oh, yeah, just like you trained his dad, eh?
08:41Oh.
08:42Yeah, he's, feels pretty stupid.
08:44So then jumping on from there, we go to Alderaan, and we see Princess Leia.
08:50I was not expecting this at all.
08:52No, I didn't, I don't know if she's been trailed at all, Leia.
08:55You know, we've had some little flashes of Luke in the trailers and the promotional materials,
08:59but it looks like we're going to get some really good stuff with Leia,
09:02which I like because you would expect to see a lot more of Luke.
09:06But as we all know, Luke's life is completely uninteresting up to the point of Episode 4.
09:11Yeah.
09:12But Leia looks like she's got a lot of adventure in her.
09:15She has.
09:15That's what's going to lead her to become, you know, this real figurehead in the Rebel Alliance.
09:20And a detail that I noticed, that I loved, was when we first see her there,
09:24she's running, well, there's the little decoy being put in all the fancy clothes,
09:29and then we cut to her running through the woods and checking out all the different ships.
09:33And she's wearing orange with sort of white overalls on.
09:38And it's very obviously a little reference to the Rebel Alliance colors.
09:45Oh, yeah.
09:46Yeah.
09:46The X-wing flight suits.
09:47I never noticed that.
09:48That's a good observation.
09:49Yeah, really nice little bit of visual character.
09:52There we go.
09:52You know, there she is.
09:54She's going to...
09:55Yeah.
09:55We know where she ends up.
09:56You've got the, like, the contrast between her looking up at the ships.
10:01And it's kind of the same thing with Luke.
10:02It's just funny to see, like, the parallels between the two.
10:05Yeah, definitely.
10:05Obviously, she's got such a good life as a princess.
10:09And Luke's stuck on Tatooine.
10:10Yeah, she's got no time for it either, though, does she?
10:13Yeah.
10:13Her kind of pampered life as a princess.
10:15She wants adventure.
10:16And Luke's miserable, dull life as a farm boy.
10:18And he wants adventure.
10:19They're kindred spirits.
10:20And I think that works very nicely.
10:23It's nice to see her as a kid there.
10:24And it looks like we're going to see a lot more of her in the series.
10:27And I think the young actress playing her does a really great job.
10:31It can be hit or miss with child actors.
10:34And she did a very good job.
10:36Yeah.
10:37Very, very watchable.
10:37And that leads to Leia getting kidnapped.
10:40Of course it does, yeah.
10:41By the third sister.
10:44Well, yeah.
10:44Well, initially by what looks like a bunch of bandits.
10:47That scene wasn't great.
10:49I don't know.
10:49It was a bit goofy.
10:50Do you know why it's a bit goofy?
10:53Go on.
10:53Well, do you know who that main bandit was?
10:55Who?
10:55It was Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
10:58Flea!
10:58And I feel like I'd heard this already, that Flea was in it.
11:01And you saw the back of his head in one earlier scene.
11:03I was like, oh, sinister guy here.
11:04I can't wait to see who this is.
11:05And then when we saw his face, I just laughed out loud.
11:09I love him.
11:10I thought he was like, I thought he was great.
11:12I think the level that he was working on was absolutely fine.
11:15But it was, the chase through the woods was like a little bit goofy.
11:18I feel like those kidnappers were like a bit bumbling, weren't they?
11:22Yeah, 100%.
11:23Yeah.
11:24And that is what leads Obi-Wan to come out, go off planet.
11:28Be a log on.
11:29I ask him, oh, will you please get Leia back?
11:31Like, this is your responsibility.
11:33Is that I can't?
11:34Well, that's it.
11:34He refuses the first time.
11:36He sees them on their little hologram.
11:38He gets his distress call.
11:39And he says, no, find someone else.
11:41Yeah.
11:41I'm not the guy anymore.
11:43What?
11:44He is the guy.
11:45Because he does it.
11:46Well, that's it.
11:46Well, he goes back into town, doesn't he, to see that his young Jedi friend, who he refused
11:50to help earlier, is now dead.
11:52He's been lynched by the Inquisitors.
11:55So, feeling a little bit of guilt, he then goes back to his cave.
11:58His little ring doorbell says something a bit more suspicious this time.
12:02He gets in there, and there's Bail Organa himself.
12:04And I made this note as I was writing it.
12:06It just says Jimmy Smits with a little heart next to it.
12:09And I just love the guy.
12:11I love seeing him as Bail Organa.
12:12I think, you know, he was there in the prequels.
12:14And he was another real highlight of those prequel movies.
12:17I thought he was absolutely brilliant.
12:18And it was great to see him in Rogue One when we saw him very briefly there.
12:22It is nice when they tie the actors back into it.
12:25Yeah, it is nice.
12:26Taking the best parts of these prequels and folding them back into sort of wider Star Wars
12:31stuff is brilliant.
12:32I like how the prequels are just celebrated now.
12:35Like, it's got to the point where everyone hates the sequel trilogy now.
12:39So, everyone now loves the prequel trilogy.
12:41It's like, that's fair.
12:41Yeah, I mean, you know, I like all of it.
12:45You know, well, I say I like all of it.
12:46I'm not a fan of the prequels, but I'm not going to sit there and rubbish them.
12:50You know, I think there's like, there's something to be loved about them.
12:54And it was, you know, while whatever you, you know, while it may not have worked, all
13:00of it, there was a real great vision behind it.
13:03You know, and I'm not going to, you know, I'm not going to tear into anyone who does
13:06like it.
13:07So, then we've got Obi-Wan goes and digs up the two lightsabers in the sand.
13:11That's it.
13:12Well, in earlier scene, he says to that young Jedi, doesn't he?
13:14He says, he says, I'll tell you what you want to do with that lightsaber.
13:18Take it out of the Dune Sea and bury it.
13:20Yeah.
13:21And I don't want to see it ever again, you know.
13:23And then, of course, he goes and digs up and he's got the two lightsabers there, both
13:26his and Anakin's, which I think is lovely.
13:28It's a nice touch.
13:29Really like that.
13:31And that's it, isn't it?
13:32Yeah.
13:33He goes off planet and that brings us to the end of episode one.
13:36Yeah.
13:36Which I liked a lot.
13:38Yeah.
13:38It was good.
13:39But if you had to give it a rating out of 10, what would you say?
13:43I think I would probably, I'd probably give it like a solid eight.
13:46Right.
13:46I think it's, I think it was good.
13:47I really liked that it was quite slow.
13:50It didn't, you know, it didn't sort of just go all in and throw us into a huge amount of
13:55action.
13:56It was a, there was a real sense of dread to it.
13:58And I thought the pacing was really nice.
14:00It's all build up at this point.
14:01Like everyone's like, when are we going to see Vader?
14:03When are we going to see Vader?
14:04That's the big draw of the series, I think.
14:07And they're like, just taking the time, building up to it.
14:11And I think that's, that's the way to do it.
14:13Absolutely.
14:14Just, yeah.
14:15Slow it down.
14:16Don't throw it at us straight away.
14:18You know, leave Vader for a little bit.
14:19We'll come to.
14:21But good.
14:22Really good, solid first episode.
14:24And, and of course the end of that episode, he leaves Tatooine.
14:29He does.
14:30And I was so glad.
14:32I was so glad.
14:32We'd seen other planets in the trailers, but I'm so glad that we move away from Tatooine
14:36almost immediately.
14:37Yeah.
14:38You know, we'll get one, one, one episode with it.
14:41Maybe we'll go back at the end.
14:42No more of that, please.
14:44No more Tatooine.
14:45So that brings us nicely to the second episode.
14:48Episode two.
14:49Which we will quickly run through.
14:53It's such a contrast to the first.
14:55Such a contrast.
14:56So this new planet, a new planet we've never seen before.
14:59Yeah.
14:59Dayu.
15:01Dayu.
15:02Yes.
15:03Dayu, I think it's called.
15:04And it's just, well, it's, it's Blade Runner in space.
15:08Yeah.
15:09And I love that.
15:09Visually, it's so nice.
15:12Yeah.
15:12It looks so good.
15:14Such, such a lovely, like, cyberpunk vibe to it.
15:17I mean, the genre rather than the game.
15:19And it's, it's grubby.
15:21And it's just these huge neon signs and these massive kind of huge, huge dirty buildings
15:26everywhere.
15:27It's, I don't think we've ever seen anything quite like it in Star Wars.
15:31I think the closest thing would be some areas in Coruscant.
15:34Maybe.
15:35Maybe.
15:36Yeah.
15:36Like, you know.
15:37At the start.
15:38Yeah.
15:38When he goes, he goes into that bar and he's got.
15:41Yeah.
15:42What's the lad's name?
15:44Sleazebagano.
15:45The Deathstick guy.
15:46Deathstick guy.
15:47Yeah, and of course, he's, he's moving through the city in Dayu and someone else tries to
15:52sell him some spice, don't they?
15:53Yeah.
15:53So we've got this place full of kind of drug dealers, spice runners and kind of info brokers,
15:59you know?
15:59Yeah.
16:00The Clone Trooper as well.
16:01The Clone Trooper.
16:02That was, that was an interesting choice, wasn't it?
16:04I wondered because I just heard that voice.
16:05I heard, I just heard Tamura Morrison's voice and I went, oh, there he is.
16:09And we cut to him and there he is.
16:11And he's got, he's got his great big beard.
16:13And I thought, I thought, oh, for a moment I thought, is this Rex?
16:17I doubt it.
16:18But Clone Trooper with a big beard, he's homeless and he's, you know, doesn't appear to be evil.
16:24So maybe that'll come back.
16:26So Obi-Wan's then going to find Leia and someone says, oh, there's a Jedi on planet that can,
16:32that can help you out.
16:33A Jedi.
16:34Yeah.
16:36There's Kumail Nanjiani.
16:38We, we had this discussion before the show came out.
16:40We're like, who, who is he going to play?
16:41Like, because you saw him in the trailer very briefly.
16:44It's like, there's a shroud of mystery around him.
16:46He had some Jedi robes on, didn't he?
16:48This was just perfect, I think, like.
16:49It was great.
16:50Yeah.
16:50You get, you, the very first moment you see him, you think, oh, come on, Nanjiani's a Jedi.
16:54Because he's, he's like manipulating the windows and stuff like that.
16:57Is he using the force?
16:58But actually, he's just a con man.
17:00Just a con man.
17:00I couldn't initially gauge from that scene whether he was actually helping those people or whether
17:05he was selling them out to someone else.
17:07And the impression I get was that he was helping them, but just making a bit of coin on the
17:10side.
17:11Yeah.
17:11You know, and he's, he's on his little phone going, ah, yes, this is, this is a Jedi mind
17:16tricking you.
17:16It's like, it's not how the force works.
17:19Yeah.
17:19But he was great.
17:20I really, I found him very likable.
17:22And he comes back up later, of course, initially looking like he's going to betray Obi-Wan.
17:28But he ends up helping him.
17:29Yeah.
17:29He ends up helping him.
17:30This whole, this is not a negative thing, but like it had a very video game feel to it.
17:36Like, it's like he's fetched questers to go and get Leia.
17:39And then there's a little bit of an escort mission style thing.
17:42Yeah, definitely.
17:42I can, I can see that.
17:44He's, yeah, don't, don't let Leia out of your sight.
17:46Yeah.
17:46Yeah.
17:47Leia got too far away from you.
17:49Leia tried to eat the food.
17:50Yeah.
17:51Well, he goes to rescue her and he goes through, he goes through his little space meth lab,
17:55you know, where they're making all that spice.
17:57Uses a little bit of the force to distract them.
17:59Yeah.
17:59Because originally I thought, has he cut himself off from the force?
18:02But then that scene uses it to explode the.
18:05He hasn't quite as easy, but he's very rusty.
18:07Mm-hmm.
18:08He is.
18:08Which we see a little bit later.
18:09Which comes to play when Leia then starts running away from Obi-Wan because she's like,
18:13you've been lying to us this whole time.
18:14Yeah, that's right.
18:15And we end up on the, the rooftops.
18:17Well, I mean, before that she was a total liability anyway.
18:19Oh, yeah.
18:20Yeah.
18:20He takes her out and he goes, right, we've got to get some different clothes.
18:23You know, this is after he's, of course, this is after he confronts Flea and all his
18:27gang.
18:27And he uses a spice bomb to, to knock them all out.
18:31And then you see them and they're totally high later on.
18:33No lightsaber ignition yet.
18:34Yeah.
18:35I like that.
18:36I like that.
18:36We get, we get there.
18:37And I like.
18:38Teasing it.
18:38And building up to it.
18:39That's right.
18:40I like that we have to get there.
18:41But he takes her through the streets, you know, and he says, we need to get some new
18:43clothes.
18:44And of course she wants this really fancy looking dress.
18:47And it's like, no, you'll want too much attention.
18:49And she goes, well, can I have the gloves as well?
18:51He's like, no, you're not having the gloves.
18:52We'll take the gloves.
18:53We'll take the gloves.
18:53All right.
18:54Then, you know.
18:55And then she wants to, oh, oh, the food smells nice.
18:57And we have some of that food.
18:58Oh, what's going on here?
18:59And actually, that's another point, is that the costume design on this planet, I absolutely
19:04love so much.
19:06It's so different to anything we've seen on Tatooine.
19:10Everyone's wearing sort of grubby brown robes.
19:12It's very much like a Western, you know, and here we are, we're in a city and it's
19:16again, brightly colored stuff, just interesting.
19:19This really multicultural look to things, much like Blade Runner and a lot of cyberpunk
19:23does.
19:23There's a lot of East Asian influence in there and it just looks, it's such a nice contrast.
19:29It's so refreshing.
19:30It's a miserable looking place to be, but at the same time, it's absolutely gorgeous.
19:34And the whole thing, a lot of it's shot like a sort of film noir.
19:37There's a lot of really obtuse camera angles going on.
19:40It's, it looks stunning.
19:43Yeah.
19:43And they move through the city and as you say.
19:44It is visually fantastic.
19:45Yeah, it is.
19:46And then as you say, she, we get to the rooftops.
19:48Yeah.
19:49And you've got all the, the bounty hunters, I guess, shooting at Obi-Wan, like nobody can
19:53hit shots in this.
19:54That's just a star of a thing.
19:55Yeah.
19:55Even Obi-Wan can't hit shots.
19:56He's a terrible shot.
19:58He's a good fighter.
19:59Yeah.
19:59Every time he fights in this.
20:00Some hand to hand stuff in there, isn't there?
20:02And I like his style.
20:04It's just really sort of practical and he just hits people extremely hard.
20:09Yeah.
20:09Which I like.
20:10I'm pretty sure at one point he hits him so hard.
20:11And it's like, yeah, he breaks, it looks like he breaks his knuckles, doesn't he?
20:15Ouch.
20:15Which is, which is very nice.
20:16So yeah, he has to chase her across the rooftops because she thinks she's seen a bounty out on
20:20him and she thinks, oh, he's the kidnapper.
20:22Yeah.
20:23He's not the Jedi.
20:24I haven't seen him do any Jedi stuff.
20:26And then she ends up jumping off that roof.
20:27It's like, no, don't do it.
20:29Don't do it.
20:29That's right.
20:30Obviously we know Lea doesn't die there, but it's like, is he going to be able to tap
20:34into that force and save her?
20:36Or is someone else going to save her?
20:37Yeah.
20:37That's it.
20:38Just at that last moment manages to.
20:40I got chills when that happened.
20:41Yeah.
20:42It was great.
20:43Really lovely feeling.
20:45Did the rooftop chase remind you of anything?
20:48Not specifically, no.
20:49Well, see, when Reva starts chasing after them, because of course she's set this all
20:55up.
20:55She's, you know, she's had Lea kidnapped to bring out Obi-Wan and the Inquisitors aren't
21:00happy about that.
21:00In fact, the Inquisitors are so angry about it.
21:03They essentially fire her, don't they?
21:04Yeah.
21:04They tell her to stand down.
21:05So she ignites a new scheme to get all these other bounty hunters to just cause a load of
21:12chaos.
21:13But then she starts chasing them across the rooftops.
21:16And it really reminded me of the opening rooftop chase in the Matrix.
21:18She busts out a lot of moves that Trillian uses.
21:21It's like force parkour, isn't it?
21:23Yeah, she's got some really nice force athletics going on.
21:26I was really impressed by that.
21:28So of course, yeah, he saves her and saves Lea.
21:31Yeah.
21:32And where do we go from there?
21:33They end up on that ship, don't they?
21:35It's like the cargo ship.
21:37Yes, that's right.
21:37Because of the tip they got from Camille Mangiani.
21:41What's his character's name?
21:42Haja?
21:43I think so.
21:43Yes.
21:44We'll have to fact check that one.
21:45That's right.
21:45He turns up and saves them at the last minute.
21:48Gives them some coordinates to people who can help.
21:50I wonder who that might be.
21:51I'm really excited for who that might be.
21:53Yeah.
21:53Whether it's new characters or someone we know from the wider canon.
21:58We'll find out.
22:00We'll find out.
22:02And then the third sister ends up up there with them.
22:05Yeah, she intercepts them.
22:06And it's like she's taunting Obi-Wan.
22:08She's like, come on.
22:09Come and fight us.
22:10I've ignited me like Saber.
22:11It's like, come on.
22:12Come on.
22:13Because who am I going to take you to?
22:16Lord Vader's after you.
22:17And the acting from Ewan McGregor there when he hears Lord Vader.
22:22He finds out that Anakin's still alive.
22:25It's so good, isn't it?
22:26You can really see this look of terror and regret in his face.
22:31And he does it so well.
22:32It's a real gut punch for him.
22:35And they're about to face off, aren't they?
22:37And of course, she's then cut off by the Grand Inquisitor.
22:40Yeah.
22:40Who, uh, she stabs.
22:42This one confused me a little bit because this does take place before Rebels, doesn't it?
22:47Yes.
22:47I'm pretty sure it does.
22:48Isn't the Grand Inquisitor alive in Rebels?
22:51As far as I'm aware, yes.
22:52I haven't seen Rebels, but I'm sure that the Grand Inquisitor is a Rebels character.
22:56He's also appeared in the Bad Batch as well.
22:58Right.
22:59But.
22:59Just a flesh wound then.
23:01Just a flesh wound, I presume, yeah.
23:02I mean, he got stabbed right through the chest, but this is Star Wars.
23:05The Qui-Gon death.
23:06Yeah, I think we've seen, you know, we've seen more implausible stuff happen.
23:10Darth Maul somehow coming back as a cyborg, as a nice little robot legs.
23:14Well, he's robot spider legs first.
23:15Yeah.
23:17But yeah, she takes out the Grand Inquisitor, so.
23:21While she's doing that, Obi-Wan escapes onto that ship, and then I guess they go off into
23:25the sunset, he's going to take Leia back to.
23:27Somewhere else, yeah.
23:28Wondering where he's going next.
23:29Yeah.
23:30Well, maybe to Bale or wherever, um, wherever Kumail Nanjiani, wherever, not Kumail Nanjiani.
23:36I mean, wherever Harge sent them.
23:40Yeah.
23:40We have no idea yet.
23:42But that's not, that's not the end.
23:44It's certainly not the end, is it?
23:46Well, they sit there and Obi-Wan's looking, he's looking shaken and Leia.
23:49As you would be.
23:50Yeah.
23:50When you find out that the guy that you dismembered on a lava planet actually didn't die after
23:55he burst into flames.
23:56She says, what's wrong, Obi-Wan?
23:58Well, she says, what's wrong?
23:58Ben, in fact.
23:59And you see him and he sort of says, Anakin.
24:04And we just smash cut Hayden Christensen.
24:08Yeah, the breathing.
24:09He's in the back of that tank and it's just chills.
24:10There he is.
24:11Chills.
24:12It's scary.
24:13Chills.
24:13It looks nasty, doesn't he?
24:14And it's such a good match cut there.
24:17And it's a really nice way to bring the character into it without, you know, in the first double
24:23build, just immediately going, hey, here's Vader.
24:25They're going to have a fight.
24:26We're going to build up Vader.
24:27We see him as Anakin before we see him as Vader.
24:29I thought that was a very interesting choice.
24:31Very nice touch.
24:32Because, again, I feel, I personally feel like this shouldn't be all about Vader.
24:36I like the idea of it being about Obi-Wan and Anakin because there's always Obi-Wan and
24:40Anakin in the prequels.
24:41And Obi-Wan and Vader is a different thing entirely.
24:44And this is where that crossover will happen.
24:47And, you know, we'll reach the point where they meet again in A New Hope.
24:50I'm really interested to see how they do that because, I mean, Vader's lines in A New Hope,
24:54they seem incongruous now when he says, well, when I left you, I was,
24:57but a learner and now I'm the master.
24:59And, yeah, I'm wondering how they're going to make that work.
25:01We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.
25:03I suppose will Obi-Wan, will Obi-Wan beat him and go, you're still a learner, Darth?
25:09It's got to be a draw, surely.
25:10Surely it's got to be a draw.
25:12Yeah, I mean, I think if Obi-Wan won again, he'd probably have learned from his mistake.
25:15Yeah.
25:15He'd be chopping a bit.
25:17Take the high ground this time, Vader.
25:19And on that note, I think that's probably a good note to end it on.
25:24Did you enjoy the first two episodes?
25:26I absolutely did a lot.
25:28I loved the second episode.
25:30I love that planet, Dayu.
25:33I think that's a fantastic setting.
25:35What I really want now is more interesting planets.
25:39I liked, you know, I liked Alderaan, the Mass Effect planet.
25:42I liked Dayu, the Blade Runner planet.
25:44I didn't like Tatooine, the desert planet, because we've seen it a million times before.
25:48What I'd love is a globe-trotting, you know, galaxy-hopping adventure of Obi-Wan and Leia.
25:54I think that would be a real good road move.
25:59Definitely, definitely.
26:00So, are you excited?
26:01When's the next episode out?
26:02Is it Wednesday?
26:02Wednesday, I believe, yeah.
26:04They dropped the first two at the end, yeah, Wednesday.
26:06So, there we have it.
26:07That was the first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
26:10The next episode will be out Wednesday, the 1st of June, and we will be back to once again
26:15give our thoughts on it.
26:17So, thanks very much.
26:18Until next time, remember to like, share, and subscribe.
26:21I've been Joe.
26:22And I've been Dan.
26:24Bye.
