00:00Hello my beauties, it is Sean Ferrick here for Trek Culture and the Strange New Worlds trailers
00:05are coming at us hard and fast. We've had two more since the two we got yesterday. So without
00:12much further ado, here are nine things you missed from the Hemmer and Ortega's Strange New Worlds
00:19trailers. Number nine, number one in a storm crisis. We get a revelation that Una is on the
00:26planet that we've seen the storm over in the past couple of trailers. Also trying to hurry up the
00:31people in engineering to go like hey can you kind of kind of can you kind of beam us off here because
00:36that storm's getting pretty close. This actually confirms two things. One, that she's on the planet
00:40with this storm on it, but also judging by her costume and quite frankly her hairstyle, this
00:46confirms that it is number one that Laanne is fighting in engineering in that previous trailer.
00:53We have no context as to why they're fighting, we just kind of want to know what's going on.
00:59Are we getting spoilers as to is Laanne some sort of traitor or is number one gone a little bit
01:06bonko? We don't know, we just know that in this moment she needs a bit of help getting off this
01:12planet. Number eight, another Kyle, another style. Now the transporter operator is in fact Kyle. This
01:21character who was introduced all the way back in the original series has returned for Strange New
01:27Worlds. Now we always saw Kyle either at the transporter or kind of basically dotted around
01:33the Enterprise, but we see here that he is in fact the transporter operator. Now he's wearing another
01:40uniform. This kind of tracks with the original series as well because Kyle was often seen in that
01:46engineering style jumpsuit. Now while he did turn up in, I think he's, he was at least in gold. Now we
01:53have seen him in other costumes as well. So this introduces the idea that on board the Strange New
01:59Worlds Enterprise, there is going to be these engineering style jumpsuits as well as our standard
02:05uniforms. Look, I've made the joke many, many times about uniforms and I'm going to make it again
02:10because it's a good one. Gimme, gimme, gimme, gimme. I'm officially on camera asking for like, I don't
02:15know, can I get some sort of subsidy? CBS, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks a bunch. Number seven,
02:21Hemmer is a genius after all. We get to meet Hemmer who is an Enar and is in fact a genius. He's going to
02:29be serving in engineering. Now we don't have any confirmation yet as to who the chief engineer aboard
02:35this version of the Enterprise is. It could well be Hemmer himself. There's no, there's no word of
02:41Scotty turning up at any point. Right now we just know that he seems to be the go-to guy when it comes
02:47to engineering and quite frankly because he's a genius seems to be a pretty good guy to go to. He
02:53is obviously blind which I will address in the next point as well but it is also an amazing piece of
03:01representation to show that having a disability does not in any way hamper your style. Now can we
03:08think of another engineer in Star Trek who was also blind? Let's think, Geordi LaForge anyone? The visor
03:16seems to be a relatively new piece of technology by the time of Star Trek The Next Generation
03:20which means that Hemmer is not going to be using a visor in this series and I think both work. In 1987
03:29I think that was a good way of getting around having a blind character whereas in 2022 I think
03:37embracing at least visually that the the idea of this character is blind with opaque eyes as opposed
03:46to covering this with a visor. I like this. It's a little bit of a just it's okay to be blind. You have
03:51other skills which in fact they do discuss in this trailer as well. Number six. Aren't carrots supposed
03:56to be good for eyesight? Sorry that was a terrible pun. I couldn't I couldn't resist. There is a
04:02moment in Pike's quarters which is again it seems to be a follow-on from the Uhura trailer the other
04:06day as well that this crew is sitting around in either Pike's quarters or could be Pike's home
04:12having dinner but it seems to be someone just tosses a carrot and Hemmer without even thinking just
04:19reaches up and grabs it and this is to really hammer home the point that he is saying that just
04:25because he lacks his eyesight it doesn't mean that his other senses aren't any better. Spock says that
04:32his other senses will compensate to which Hemmer replies my other senses are superior and yeah I like
04:39that. In a way I'm I'm getting daredevil vibes off Hemmer here you know yes great he he may not have
04:46eyesight in the traditional sense doesn't mean he can't run rings around me so really interesting to
04:52see where they go with Hemmer from here. Number five. To fix what is broken and it seems to be that
04:59he has a singular purpose which is to be an engineer to fix what is broken. Now there was a really
05:05interesting phrasing at this point of the trailer he says that the end is only truly come when you
05:12have fulfilled your purpose. Now this cuts to Uhura they seem to be on an away mission they're wearing
05:18away uniforms where she goes what was your purpose not what is what was your purpose. Are they facing
05:28death at this point? Now I think it doesn't take a genius it doesn't take a hammer to realize they're
05:34probably going to get out of this situation one it's in the trailer two Uhura but are they facing
05:40some life or death situation here where they think the jig is up? Number four. Relaxed atmosphere on the
05:46bridge. Now switching to Ortega's trailer we get this this fun little interplay on the bridge between
05:54Ortega's and Pike. Pike says take us in closer to which she replies going first date closer or
06:01third date closer to which he replies with a respectable blind date closer. Ah yes with caution with caution
06:09that comes when you have a relaxed chilled atmosphere like Pike is clearly the boss but Ortega's
06:16feels comfortable enough that she can make those kind of jokes for them and so far I'm loving that
06:21that is what I want because we've seen shades of this back in Discovery season two like think of when
06:27Pike says to Detmer fly good you know it's just sometimes the way you phrase an order will allow
06:35the people interpreting that order to be much more comfortable much more able to react in the way that
06:42you would like them to react as opposed to being on tenterhooks all the time. I'm reminded of that
06:48moment from Caretaker when Harry Kim and Tom Paris walk into the ready room for the first time and
06:53Janeway walks around the desk and goes Mr. Kim at ease before you sprain something. You need to have
06:59that relaxed atmosphere and I'm delighted to see that we seem to have that on the bridge of the
07:03Enterprise. Number three. Practice what you preach. All sorts of shenanigans going on the ship seems to be
07:09getting a bit of a battering and Pike turns around to Ortega's and says do you remember when you always
07:13said that you would graduate the academy as the best pilot ever? She goes what's your point sir?
07:17And he goes could you prove that please? And I again so this is building off the previous point
07:22where there is this relaxed atmosphere but also there's this confidence that Pike shows to Ortega's
07:27which allows her then to take that confidence and run with it. Now also I mean we know nothing
07:34really about Ortega's character other than Pilot. That's that's pretty much what we know so far.
07:41If in fact she is to be as good as this is to promise I am looking forward to seeing some
07:47some some fair flying skills and and also the visuals in this trailer. I know you're thinking
07:54oh Sean's mentioned visuals again take a shot. Yeah it just looks gorgeous they seem to be flying
07:59through either a gas giant or gas rings or something. Oh I'm here for it. Number two the Tholian
08:05Web. Now we see what looks to be an earlier precursor of the Tholian Web being cast around
08:11the Enterprise in this trailer as well. We saw them in the original series episode the Tholian Web where
08:16the poor Al USS Defiant well it ended up looking a bit glowy which said of course the events of the
08:21Mirror Universe back in Enterprise and Mirror Darkly. Now the Tholians did turn up in Enterprise as well
08:28so we know that first contact has well happened by the time Pike's Enterprise is being surrounded by
08:33the Tholian Web but it looks like that's not all that they'll have to face with because Twitter user
08:41AmazeSatsuma reckons that this ship that's chasing after the Enterprise and firing at them
08:47actually resembles a starship from Star Trek Online. Namely it looks quite like the Breen
08:55plesh trowel heavy raider. Now whether it is or not of course is we'll find out later on but
09:02it still has that same general shape that would be in line with CBS effectively embracing Star Trek
09:08Online. We've seen it in the ships that turned up in Star Trek Picard's pilot for the second season
09:14so this is quite an exciting potential embracing of Star Trek Online in Strange New Worlds as well.
09:22Number one, intruders on the bridge. It seems to escalate from firing at the Enterprise to firing
09:27on the Enterprise because we see Ortegas hiding down behind the navigation deck and firing a phaser
09:34at someone. Now unless she has decided do you know what this ship needs? It's a good old mutiny. I presume
09:40she's firing at some sort of intruder and that is worrying. On the idea of a mutiny which I don't think
09:46there's going to be a mutiny but we see number one fighting La Anne. We see Ortegas firing a phaser
09:53on the bridge of the Enterprise. Is something taking control of various members of the Enterprise crew?
10:00We don't know but these little hints that are being dropped along and along just has me so excited for
10:05this series. We're going to get answers to some of these questions on May 5th when this show starts
10:11streaming. What are you looking forward to most? You let us know in the comments below. Please don't forget to
