It’s the start of summer, which is also the peak season for child drownings across Australia. Authorities are imploring adults to be aware of the risks.

00:00Over the holidays, more families will experience the simple joy of days at the beach.
00:08Surf Lifesavers want everyone to make it home.
00:11Since mid-August, we've already had 11 beach-related drownings.
00:14That's more than we had this time last year.
00:17There's a growing trend of people swimming outside of patrolled areas and times.
00:22So far this year, Queensland Lifesavers have rescued more than 500 children.
00:28And December and January are the highest risk months.

00:39Around Australia, swimming pools are the biggest drowning danger zone for children aged 4 and under.
00:46In the past year, just over half of all drowning deaths in that age group happened in swimming pools.

00:56Children, particularly under 5, don't struggle, they don't call out and they don't make a noise.

01:03Often guilt-riddled parents were only briefly distracted.
01:07Mostly they say that they only looked away for a minute, either on their phone or they got distracted by something else happening.
01:14Last year, 26 children died from drowning in Australia. Others were left with ongoing injuries.
