00:00I'm so excited to talk about Jingle Bell Heist.
00:02This movie is full of holiday hijinks.
00:05I read that you watched some Christmas classics like The Holiday
00:08to kind of get in the spirit for it, as well as Ocean's Eleven to prepare.
00:13How would you pitch this movie, I guess, to people scrolling through Netflix,
00:17deciding what to watch?
00:18Sure, I mean, the two movies that you just named are big references
00:22that I would say that sort of helped us get into the zone and tone of the movie.
00:26But honestly, like, it's such a mashup of genres
00:30that it just is a real standout and unique in its own way.
00:34And if you want a rom-com, we got you.
00:37If you want a holiday movie, we got you.
00:39If you want an action heist movie, we got you.
00:42And so the film opens with Sophia and Nick just ahead of their Christmas Eve heist
00:46and slowly but surely unravels to reveal that their motives are rather pure
00:51and that both of them were wronged by Maxwell Sterling, the head of the department store.
00:55And so did this mean that you kind of worked backwards in terms of filming?
00:59Yeah, oh, we were all over the place.
01:02There was no chronological order of shooting, which is normally the case,
01:07which actually made it really fun because every day was so different.
01:10Some days it felt like we were just fully in rom-com land,
01:12and then other days it felt like we were in a full-on action movie,
01:16like strapped to, like, harnesses and doing stunt work.
01:18But, yeah, I mean, we were all over the place.
01:22But honestly, like, the most exciting part was that we were filming in London at Christmastime,
01:29and this movie is set in London at Christmastime,
01:32so it just sort of felt like this continuous movie-making experience.
01:37There's no point in both of us risking everything.
01:41I'm the one with the record.
01:43And I'm the one that can crack the safe.
01:46We're partners.
01:48Because, you know, most of the time when you're making either a Christmas movie or a summer movie,
01:52the actual, like, seasons are reversed in real life,
01:55or you're, yeah, it's just so, that part was really fun and exciting.
01:58And you've made movies in the past about Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, and now Christmas.
02:04Which holiday is up next for you?
02:05I can't help it, okay?
02:07I don't know what my deal is.
02:08I just love holidays.
02:10I don't know.
02:12I feel like I've literally done every holiday movie.
02:15I don't know.
02:15Maybe a New Year's one would be fun.
02:18I just love holidays, so can't keep me away from them.
02:22I love it.
02:23Kind of off of that theme,
02:24and you've also really established yourself in the horror genre, I would say,
02:28starring in films like Totally Killer and Heart Eyes and the upcoming thriller This Is Not a Test.
02:34Is this where you hope to stay going forward?
02:36Did working on a Christmas movie kind of feel out of your comfort zone?
02:39I love Christmas movies.
02:41I've been a sucker of them for a long time and rom-coms,
02:44and I was so excited to work on this movie in particular
02:49because of how interesting and unique the script is
02:52and how beautiful the characters are and how complex they are,
02:56and I think that's what I'm most naturally gravitating towards
03:02whenever I choose a project to work on.
03:05I want to be a part of great storytelling and great characters,
03:10and even with this theme of holidays that I've been making holiday movies
03:16or this theme of characters that are sort of in the same realm,
03:20I always feel like I gravitate more towards the characters first and the storytelling.
03:25And you and Connor Swindell's established such great chemistry throughout this film.
03:30What was it like getting to work with him?
03:32The best.
03:33Connor is so talented and so fun and just really good people,
03:38and I had so much fun working with him,
03:41and when he jumped on board to make this movie with us,
03:44I was like, we're good.
03:46There's a no-brainer that we're going to make a great movie,
03:49and working with him is an honor, really.
03:53And I'd love to shift gears a little bit
03:55because the news of the third season of Cruel Summer being in development,
03:59which I'm so excited about,
04:01outside of reprising your role as Kate from season one,
04:05and you would be an executive producer.
04:07Can you take me through some of the conversations you had,
04:10I guess, ahead of this development
04:12and what it was like getting this potentially and hopefully off the ground?
04:16Who knew that this was going to happen?
04:18I mean, it was a surprise to me.
04:19I obviously really loved working on the first season,
04:23and this character means so much to me.
04:26So to be able to come back and make a third season
04:29and to reprise the role of Kate Wallace
04:30and to also step into the world of executive producing
04:35is going to be the most thrilling experience of my career, I think.
04:40And it's a lot of firsts for me,
04:42so some of it is very foreign territory.
04:44So the challenge of stepping into this new role
04:48is, as an actor, very exciting
04:51because you get a little bit more creative liberation and control
04:55as far as where the story is going
04:57and what your character is thinking, feeling, saying, all the things.
05:00And as an actor, you really just get the script
05:03and you get to breathe life into this character,
05:05but there's so many cooks in the kitchen who are telling you,
05:08yeah, but what about this? What about this?
05:10And this opportunity is just going to be a very different experience for me.
05:16And we're still very early in the pre-production,
05:18so I can't say too much about what we're doing,
05:22but I think people are really going to love it.
05:24And, yeah, we'll see. It'll be a wild ride.
05:26And I grew up watching you on Kicking It
05:29and in movies like Girl vs. Monster, my friends and I,
05:31actually re-watched it on Halloween.
05:33I have to tell you, we did like a Disney throwback.
05:35Wow. We had to.
05:37And you've obviously pivoted to projects for older audiences
05:41and have had an incredible career that you've launched.
05:44I guess, what was the turning point for you
05:46when you knew you wanted to take on different roles
05:48and maybe more mature projects?
05:49I think with time.
05:50I was so young when I started on those shows
05:55and I really didn't understand the gravity of what I was doing.
05:58I just was a kid having fun with, like, a bunch of my pals.
06:01And as I got older, I think I really started to understand
06:05what this industry is.
06:06And it is, at the end of the day, a job.
06:09But to have fun and, like, it was like my playground.
06:13I got to not only just enjoy the people I was working with,
06:16but I was just soaking up so much knowledge every single day
06:20because you're working with an entire crew of people
06:22who have a different job than you do.
06:24So I think just as time went on and as I got older,
06:27I started to realize the things that I wanted to explore more further into.
06:32And, yeah, I think about, like, I don't know, even, like, 10 years ago,
06:38like, what I wanted to be doing with my career.
06:41And it's so different than what it looks like now.
06:43And I think that's just the evolution of growing not only as an artist
06:47but as a human.
06:48So the projects that I've chosen in the last couple of years
06:51is just all just me growing with time.
06:54Other fan theories and, I guess, ideas online are that on TikTok,
06:58a lot of people are really excited or interested in the idea
07:01of fan casting you and Madeline Klein as sisters.
07:05Oh, I'm into that.
07:06Yeah, I was going to say, how would you feel about this?
07:09There's been a lot of talk on TikTok.
07:11How would you feel? Have you seen any of this online?
07:13I haven't seen any of this, no.
07:14But I think she's so beautiful and so talented,
07:16and I would love to work with her.
07:18I love that.
07:19We'll manifest it.
07:21Let's manifest it. Put it out in the world.
07:22And in the spirit of Jingle Bell Heist,
07:25a Christmas movie on Netflix,
07:26what is your favorite Christmas movie?
07:30Oh, there's so many that I love.
07:34I mean, the list starts probably with The Grinch.
07:37It's classic.
07:39I also really love The Holiday.
07:41You know what?
07:42Deep cut that nobody talks about
07:44that I think people need to talk about
07:45is Christmas with the Cranks.
07:47Very true.
07:48Have you seen it?
07:49Do you know which one I'm talking about?
07:50Yes.
07:50No one talks about it.
07:52And I think it's wonderful.
07:54I think it's such a fun Christmas movie.
07:56But I don't know.
07:56I'm like, I just, I watch all of them.
07:59I love it.
08:00Yeah.
