The 'Stillwater' star says that while America is a free country and getting a COVID-19 vaccine is a personal choice, he trusts science over "something you read on Facebook."
Transcript
00:00Matt Damon is speaking up about COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in the U.S.
00:05In a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment while promoting his upcoming focus features
00:08crime drama Stillwater, the actor shared why vaccine hesitancy and achieving herd immunity
00:13are personally important to him, saying,
00:16I have a couple of friends who are immunocompromised and they can't get the vaccine,
00:20so they have no choice but to rely on the rest of us to do our part to get to herd immunity,
00:24so I look at it that way.
00:26According to the Center for Disease Control, as of July 21st, only 48.8% of Americans are fully
00:32vaccinated. Damon noted that while people technically have the right to choose whether
00:36to take the vaccine, for him, the answer on whether to get vaccinated is very clear, saying,
00:41I fall heavily on the side of trusting science more than something you read on Facebook.
00:45In 2020, Damon participated in Control the Contagion, a PSA campaign that featured the
00:50actor alongside other cast members and crew from the 2011 pandemic thriller Contagion,
00:55which caught renewed focus due to the parallels in the film in light of the pandemic start and
01:00nationwide quarantines and shutdowns. During his recent interview, Damon expressed his feelings
01:05around how people have responded to pandemic precautions and vaccinations, stressing that
01:10he wished there had been more focus on what people could do collectively rather than as individuals.
01:14I wish at the beginning of this, people came out and said, look, if we all do this,
01:19then we'll protect each other better. It's just about looking at this as a me thing or an us thing.
