00:00Emmy winner Elizabeth Moss is teaming up with Oscar winner Susan Sarandon on a
00:03women's rights project titled, ''Call Jane''. In the film, Moss will play Joy, a
00:08traditional 1960s American housewife who is desperate for a child. But her
00:12pregnancy poses a threat to her life and she has nowhere to turn until she finds
00:17an underground abortion movement called the Janes, based on the Jane Collective
00:20which operated in Chicago from 1969 to 1973 when abortion was still illegal.
00:26Sarandon will play Virginia, the Janes' leader.
00:29The subject matter is particularly relevant now at a time when women's rights have
00:33once again come into question and the pro-life versus pro-choice debate rages on.
00:38Sian Hito will direct the feature while Moss will also produce along with Robbie Brenner,
00:42the Oscar-nominated producer of Dallas Buyers Club.
00:45As a producer, I strive to tell stories that are meaningful and provocative but also to
00:50help put a mirror up to our world in order to move and inspire the audience with
00:54honesty and relatability, says Brenner.
00:56As a woman and a mother of two girls, I feel a responsibility with Call Jane to tell the
01:01incredible story of these brave women at a time when women's rights and empowerment
01:05hang in the balance. I have no doubt that Sian will craft a beautiful and important film
01:11with our dedicated and amazing cast, Elizabeth and Susan.
01:14For her part, the topic of pregnancy and women's rights is a theme that Moss is well familiar with
01:18as an actress. She has been giving an incredible performance as June in Hulu's dystopian
01:23Nightmare The Handmaid's Tale since it premiered in April 2017.
01:27Said Moss,
01:28I'm so excited to be bringing this beautiful script to life with Sian and Robbie and to be working
01:33with Susan, who I admire tremendously. The Jane Collective is an important and fascinating
01:38part of our history, especially for women. We see their story unfold through the eyes of Joy,
01:43a complex character who represents many women caught between one period of time and the next.
01:48It's also frighteningly relevant and timely to be telling the story right now and I know with Sian at the
01:53helm, it's going to be an honest and brave film. To read more on this story, head to THR.com.
01:59For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Lyndsey Rodrigues.
