00:01In an interview with Euronews' new morning show Europe Today, General Ben Hodges, former
00:07commanding general of the U.S. Army in Europe, speaking on the war in Ukraine and Europe's
00:12safety, warned that the continent is slowly waking to the realization that it cannot count
00:18on Washington as a fair partner.
00:21I think Europe and Ukraine, including Ukraine, knows that the United States has a primary
00:27interest, which is business with Russia after this is all concluded.
00:32In the general's view, the U.S. administration's approach to the conflict was flawed from the start.
00:39The administration's approach has always been doomed from the start because they didn't care
00:46about the origin, they didn't care about the history or the geography involved, and in fact
00:51approached it as a massive real estate deal.
00:53I mean, Secretary Rubio said in the beginning, Ukraine, you're going to have to give up
00:59some territory here, before they even started.
01:02This week, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will skip a key NATO meeting, highlighting Europe's
01:09decreasing priority for the U.S. after the Western Hemisphere, Indo-Pacific and likely
01:15the Middle East, according to Hodges.
01:17But the general remains confident that Europe has the capabilities to defeat Russia's war
01:22in Ukraine.
01:23If you add together the industry, the wealth, the populations, the technologies, there's
01:30no reason that Europe, including Ukraine, cannot stop Russia.
01:34What they lack is the self-confidence and the political will.
01:38According to Hodges, the narrative that Ukraine is losing the war doesn't add up, as Russia's
01:44economy is in deep trouble.
01:45And in 11 years, Russia has only been able to occupy 20 percent of Ukrainian territory.
01:57Top Trump administration officials met with Ukrainian negotiators in Florida on Sunday to
02:03discuss a peace deal with Russia.
02:05The diplomats discussed the 28-point plan and focused on revisions, as the plan has been criticized
02:11for being too weighted towards Russian demands.
02:15Initially, the plan imposed limits on the size of Ukraine's military, blocked the country from
02:19joining NATO, and required Ukraine to hold elections in 100 days.
02:24According to local media, the diplomats discussed election timelines and the possibility to exchange
02:30territories.
02:31However, no details were provided.
02:33The head of Ukraine's Security Council, Rustem Umerov, said he remains in constant contact
02:39with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and that the negotiators are working to secure long-term
02:44security guarantees for Ukraine.
02:47Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the talks productive and said he expected to
02:52yield progress towards reaching a peace deal.
02:55The talks with the U.S. come at a critical time for Ukraine, as it continues to push back
03:00Russian forces while Kyiv is simultaneously dealing with a domestic corruption scandal.
03:05Later this week, Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff are expected to meet with Russian officials,
03:11including Vladimir Putin.
03:15The president of the International Criminal Court said during the institution's annual meeting
03:22on Monday that it won't bow to pressure from either the U.S. or Russia.
03:27Nine members of its staff, including six judges and the court's chief prosecutor, have been
03:33sanctioned by U.S. President Donald Trump for pursuing investigations into U.S. and Israeli
03:40officials, while Moscow has issued warrants for ICC staff in response to an arrest warrant
03:46for President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine.
03:51The sanctions have taken their toll on the court's work, affecting a wide range of investigations,
03:56at a time when it's already struggling with growing demands on its resources.
04:08Swiss citizens have overwhelmingly rejected initiative that planned to tax the super-rich
04:14and introduce mandatory civic service to women.
04:18In a referendum held on Sunday, neither initiative gained even a quarter of the votes needed to
04:23go ahead.
04:24Critics, including the federal government, warned that such a tax could drive wealthy families
04:30and entrepreneurs abroad, ultimately harming the Swiss economy.
04:35The initiative planned to use the tax money to fight climate change.
04:38As I have already explained the bill to the board, the administration of the government, it
04:46was the fundamental concern of climate policy, in order to prevent climate change, however, it
04:48was a political compromise.
04:49The administration was both a constitutional commission.
04:51The administration took to make many reasons for civilizing this election, and now that
04:53the administrationazi Council lost their invitation.
04:54Prime Minister from the government and in 2015, the administration has taken the opportunity to
04:55leave an action for the expense of climate change.
04:55The party has agreed that they're really busy and is starting to do so.
04:59It's a part that it is not enough for the government, and it is not enough for all of the
05:00Republicans to pay attention to on its own policy.
05:01The party has agreed that they really should beanganronized the policy and theflip of the
05:02government authorities.
05:04supporters argue that the richest individuals have a disproportionately
05:10large carbon footprint and should contribute more to climate solutions
05:14popular cryptocurrencies are continuing to struggle as bitcoin opened the month of
05:24december with a five percent drop in value in european trading the coin currently hovers around
05:3073 500 euros in value a sharp decline from its estimated value only 24 hours prior which was
05:39just short of 78 000 euros the digital currency had been in a prolonged and steep decline since
05:45reaching its record value of about 110 000 euros in october the decline is likely attributed to a
