Many video games fall well short of developer promises. But some end up being worth a second chance. Here are a few that overcame disaster and managed to turn it around for the better.

00:06crashed and burned on arrival, falling well short of developers' promises.

00:11But against all odds, some managed to turn it around.

00:24Widely seen as the comeback kid of gaming, No Man's Sky from indie dev Hello Games teased

00:30a potentially infinite universe to explore, but on launch day, players got a generic survival

00:35game with sparse, monotonous content and a total lack of multiplayer.

00:40Initially keeping quiet, the devs committed to doing right by fans, and several massive

00:45updates later have turned this into a success story with the game going on to win numerous

00:51awards.

01:02Few games get an opportunity to burn it all down and start from scratch.

01:06But that's what happened after the original version of MMO Final Fantasy XIV met with such

01:11a dismal response that Square Enix ultimately scrapped the entire project, shutting down

01:17servers two years later in 2012.

01:20After going back to the drawing board, a version 2.0 was released in 2013 under the moniker

01:26A Realm Reborn to both critical and commercial acclaim.

01:37Teased back in 2012, Cyberpunk 2077 released across current and last-gen platforms in 2020

01:44after a series of delays, and suffered one of the most disastrous launches in gaming history,

01:50rapidly becoming the poster child for AAA games toppling under the weight of their own hype.

01:56The game under-delivered so spectacularly, with bugs making it all but unplayable on last-gen

02:02consoles, that Sony removed it from its storefront for six months.

02:15While the jury is still out on whether Cyberpunk has had its redemption arc, the game has since

02:20been vastly improved through a series of patches, and is set to receive its first major expansion

02:27in 2023.
