00:00Carla-Sofia Gascogne is opening up about why she deactivated her ex-account
00:04and responding to the controversy surrounding her past social media posts.
00:09The Best Actress Oscar nominee shared a long statement exclusively with The Hollywood Reporter
00:14about why she chose to deactivate her account after critics surfaced inflammatory old tweets of hers
00:19weighing in on the 2020 murder of George Floyd, as well as decrying Muslim immigration in her native Spain
00:24and calling for a ban of, quote, religions that go against European values.
00:28Gascogne's statement begins,
00:31I'm sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect neither my family nor me anymore.
00:37So at their request, I am closing my account on X.
00:40I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused, and harassed to the point of exhaustion.
00:45I have a wonderful daughter to protect, whom I love madly, and who supports me in everything.
00:50Gascogne, the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for Best Actress,
00:54has faced abuse and death threats from anti-trans factions online.
00:57Her Oscar campaign has been framed in a progressive light,
01:00but the revelation of Gascogne's incendiary past positions has thrown her campaign into disarray.
01:05In her statement, Gascogne apologizes for her, quote, erroneous past opinions,
01:10chalking them up in part to the toxicity of social media.
01:13She went on to say,
01:14Perhaps my words are not correct, many times due to ignorance or pure mistake.
01:18I apologize again if anyone has ever felt offended or in the future.
01:21Gascogne also suggested that the voices that have aligned against her
01:25could be part of a deliberate effort to scuttle her Oscar chances.
01:28She wrote,
01:29Forgive me because I keep going from one side to the other,
01:32and I cannot be responding to every single thing you bring up to try to sink me.
01:36It is clear that there is something very dark behind it.
