THR is breaking everything down from the 'Game of Thrones' season finale “The Dragon and the Wolf” and what it all means as we head -- eventually -- into the final stretch of episodes.
Transcript
00:00Guys, Game of Thrones is over. No! Well, it's over until the final season anyway,
00:09which may not be coming until 2019.
00:12Then there is nothing left to discuss.
00:14So who's ready to wait over 16 months?
00:16No one.
00:17Well, let's not let season 7 go just yet, okay? The Hollywood Reporter's resident Westerosi
00:21wizard and Thrones expert Josh Wiggler is breaking everything down from the season finale,
00:26the dragon and the wolf and what it all means as we head eventually into the final stretch of episodes.
00:32First up, who best to help us figure out what's coming in season 8 than the Onion Knight himself?
00:38That's right, Wiggler spoke to Liam Cunningham, a.k.a. Ser Davos Seaworth, about the inevitability
00:44of the White Walker invasion which, as of Sunday's episode, is finally upon us.
00:49The Great War has begun, is what Jon Snow said. I think it's absolutely right, says Cunningham.
00:54I think the next season is where all of the pieces of the puzzle are going to come together.
00:58I think that's what we had in this season overall, the disparate places and people.
01:02Eventually, the funnel has come to a point where everyone is together.
01:06It's going to be interesting where it goes because all of these people and families who don't know each other
01:11are getting together to fight the common enemy.
01:13I don't care about checking my worst impulses. I don't care about making the world a better place. Hang the world.
01:19As Cersei continues to be self-interested and covet the Iron Throne, even in the face of the White Walkers,
01:25political machinations may not be a thing of the past in the final season.
01:29According to Cunningham, it's like that beautiful line I had the first time we met Daenerys.
01:33It won't matter who's skeleton sits on the Iron Throne if we don't stand together, if we don't sit down and sort this out,
01:39if we don't stop thinking locally and if we don't start thinking globally in a sense.
01:44But knowing Game of Thrones, it's not going to be as simple as that.
01:47There's still going to be stuff going on. There's still going to be stupidity.
01:51Then there is nothing left to discuss.
01:53Oh, and what's Cunningham's take on that awkward love scene which we all wanted to see, don't lie,
01:58but now we don't know how to feel about it between Jon Snow and Auntie Daenerys?
02:02Ser Davos tells it like it is.
02:05It's a bit of a trip, isn't it? It's a bit of a weird one.
02:08When you wake up the following morning, if you got the text,
02:10don't go near that woman. She's your aunt.
02:13Let me just add here to what the Onion Knight had to say.
02:16Ahem. Jon, she's your aunt.
02:19You know nothing, Jon Snow.
02:21Of course, that unforgettable moment made Josh Wiggler's list of seven key scenes from the finale.
02:26Seriously, how uncomfortable was that? Asks Wiggler.
02:29The fact that their first sexual encounter came with the added awkwardness of Bran Stark
02:34narrating their familial connection only made what could have been a mostly tender scene
02:39into something extremely cringey.
02:41He's the heir to the Iron Throne.
02:43He's a rightful heir and her nephew, and let's just all accept this with the proper amount of emotion.
02:48I don't know why anyone's getting so excited about this.
02:51You can find me out by the trees.
02:53Meanwhile, another key scene from the finale was the Dragon Pit,
02:57which featured amazing character combinations and reunions we've been waiting for,
03:01especially the epic tease for the hashtag Clegane Bowl.
03:04That's right. The Hound and the Mountain are going to throw down.
03:07You know it. I know it. Josh Wiggler knows it.
03:10You know who's coming for you. You've always known.
03:12The tense exchange between the Hound and his undead brother in the finale
03:16brought us closer than ever before to that much-hyped confrontation,
03:20expected to go down at some point in the final six episodes.
03:24Also on the list of memorable scenes, the Queen in the North's Justice,
03:28aka Bye Bye Baelish, and boy, does it feel so good. Damn you, Littlefinger.
03:33How do you answer these charges, Lord Baelish?
03:38Wiggler pens a touching and heartfelt tribute to the show's biggest schemer.
03:42But really, he points out how appropriate it was for the Stark sisters to take him out
03:46and how for once there was no way Littlefinger could see it coming.
03:50I'm a bit confused.
03:52Littlefinger died under circumstances he could not have possibly foreseen.
03:56No, not the fact that he died at the hands of Arya Stark or even the fact that his beloved Sansa betrayed him.
04:03For Littlefinger, the man who saw all possible events at once,
04:06there was simply no preparing for an enemy who could actually see all possible events at once.
04:12Bran Stark, the three-eyed raven.
04:14Trust me, sisters, this guy is no good. I've seen it all and it's all bad.
04:18Really bad. Nothing to get excited about. I am Bran.
04:22Wiggler says this particular demise points to a new direction for the series.
04:26The White Walkers have finally arrived in Westeros.
04:28There's little time for the politicking that made Game of Thrones such a standout series in the first place.
04:33Sure, Cersei won't give up her hold over the Iron Throne without a fight,
04:37but the main thrust of the series as it enters the home stretch will be mankind's war against the army of the dead.
04:44There wasn't much room for Littlefinger in that storyline.
04:47But is he gone forever?
04:49I'm a bit confused.
04:50Wiggler offers a cool theory that Ms. No One herself might have a trick up her sleeve that could bring back Baelish in a fashion.
04:57Don't forget that the woman who executed Littlefinger also comes equipped with the ability to take on the likeness of the people she kills.
05:03What's more, this same killer still has at least one more name to cross off her list.
05:08Queen Cersei, who just so happens to be in King's Landing.
05:11And who do we know that just dropped dead at the feet of a faceless man?
05:15It's incredibly likely that we haven't seen the last of Aidan Gillen on Game of Thrones.
05:19But if we do see him again, it won't be as Littlefinger.
05:22It will be as no one.
05:24Ooh, the ultimate scheme.
05:27Now that's a touching tribute.
05:29Alright, so the season is over, but what an epic ride it was.
05:32There's a lot more to talk about.
05:34And we have so much more coverage up right now on THR.com slash Game of Thrones.
05:38Including Wiggler's full finale recap, more interviews, and lots more theories, interpretations, and coverage of Season 7 and what's to come next.
05:46Hit me in the comments to let me know your favorite moment for the finale.
05:49And how are you planning to spend the long months before Season 8?
05:53No!
