Daniel Dae Kim, who recently left CBS’ 'Hawaii Five-0,' is in negotiations to join the cast of Lionsgate and Millennium’s 'Hellboy' reboot, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.

00:11Kim will step into the role of Major Ben Daimio, which was left vacant by Ed's screen after an

00:16outcry over whitewashing an Asian-American character. The character of Daimio is a rugged

00:21military member of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, who, due to a supernatural

00:26encounter, can turn into a jaguar when angered or in pain. The character is Japanese-American

00:31in the Hellboy comics by creator Mike Mignola. Screen landed the role in August, but after

00:36a social media protest, made the unprecedented move to step down later that month. The actor

00:41said in a statement,

00:42It is clear that representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance

00:47for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure

00:52ethnic minority stories and voice in the arts. I feel it is important to honor and respect that.

00:57Kim is Korean-American and has been acting since the early 1990s. He received mass

01:02recognition thanks to his breakout work on ABC's Lost and his co-starring role on Five-0 since

01:07it launched in 2010. In June, he quit Hawaii Five-0 after a salary dispute with CBS, as he had been

01:13seeking equal pay to the show's stars Alex O. Lachlan and Scott Kahn. His departure, along with co-star

01:18Grace Park, left the show temporarily without Asian regulars. The Hellboy reboot, which is

01:23slated for a 2018 release, stars Stranger Things David Harbour and is being directed by
