You know I'm here for you, right?
00:02
And are you, Detainter?
00:05
Broadcast TV cancellations. The acts falls for an unlucky list of series every year,
00:09
while the challenge to break through and hold on in this peak TV landscape only gets steeper.
00:14
From freshman shows who dreamed of becoming the next This Is Us to veteran hits whose
00:17
time has come to an end, The Hollywood Reporter's TV editor Leslie Goldberg has rounded up
00:21
all the broadcast series that bow for the last time during the 2017-18 broadcast season so far.
00:27
And here we go.
00:28
You cannot compare yourself to anybody else. You are your own unique you.
00:34
First up, let's take a look at ABC, which wrapped up the middle after its ninth season.
00:39
Despite a recent ratings injection thanks to lead-in Roseanne, the veteran series was produced
00:43
by an outside studio, Warner Bros. Television, meaning the network did not have an ownership
00:48
stake and had to pay a licensing fee.
00:50
Meanwhile, a year after undergoing a major creative reboot with nearly all of its original
00:53
stars exiting, ABC tried to open a new Once Upon a Time chapter.
00:57
But the reboot, starring Andrew J. West, fizzled in its new Friday home.
01:01
The Shonda Rhimes-created political soap scandal said goodbye in April after seven seasons.
01:05
Rhimes, who left ABC Studios last summer for a nine-figure deal at Netflix, always stressed that the
01:09
drama would never have a run similar to Grey's Anatomy given the way the writers burn through story.
01:14
Not leaving by choice, however, was critically panned Marvel drama Inhumans, which limped off the
01:19
schedule in the fall, averaging only a 1.2 in the demo and 4 million total viewers with seven days of DVR.
01:25
Kiefer Sutherland's designated survivor also didn't make it after two seasons and four showrunner changes.
01:29
And despite a timely premise, the mayor, about an aspiring rapper who runs for office as a PR move
01:34
and wins, failed to cut through the cluttered landscape.
01:37
Also exiting ABC's schedule, the Paula Patton-led drama Somewhere Between, Keira Sedgwick's Ten Days in the Valley,
01:43
terrorism drama Quantico, sci-fi thriller The Crossing starring Steve Zahn and Natalie Martinez,
01:49
Deception, a poorly-reviewed drama about a magician who partners with the FBI to help solve crimes,
01:54
Kevin probably saves the world, which couldn't save its slot on the schedule after averaging a 1.1 in the
01:59
key demo, and the Zach Braff-led comedy Alex Inc. about a journalist who quits his stable job to open his own podcast business.
02:05
My colon is fine. It's fine.
02:09
Is it though?
02:10
Switching over to CBS, Kevin James' Kevin Can Wait made headlines at the start of season 2 after its decision
02:15
to write out and kill off Erin Hayes' character. Hoping to capture ratings gold, James' former
02:20
King of Queens star Leah Romini was promoted to series regular, but despite the shakeup,
02:25
the comedy will not return for a third season.
02:27
Genius drama Scorpion found itself on the bubble for the first time after a run of series lows
02:32
in its fourth season. Even though it was owned by CBS television studios, that wasn't enough
02:36
to save the series.
02:37
Meanwhile, amid a CBS investigation into sexual assault around star Jeremy Piven,
02:42
the network opted to let the least-watched show on Sunday's Wisdom of the Crowd end after its
02:46
initial 13-episode order.
02:48
CBS also said goodbye to Jermaine Fowler and Judd Hirsch's sophomore series Superior Donuts,
02:53
Bobby Moynihan's critically panned comedy Me, Myself and I, the comedy 9JKL, and Living Biblically,
02:59
which was executive produced by Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki and pulled from the
03:03
lineup after its most recent episode notched a series low of 3.5 million total viewers.
03:08
Come on, Vincent, we got this. It's gone off without a hitch for, what, seven years now?
03:13
Now let's move on to The CW, which bid farewell to the Vampire Diaries spin-off
03:17
The Originals after five seasons, though the franchise will continue on as The CW is
03:21
considering another spin-off from showrunner Julie Plec. But the verdict isn't as strong
03:25
for Life Sentence starring Pretty Little Liars grad Lucy Hale. It was moved to Friday's
03:30
after mustering a .1 among adults 18-49 and is not expected to return. Valor, one of multiple
03:35
military dramas to air last season, will be honorably discharged, with The CW opting to put
03:40
its faith in its Dynasty reboot, which has a lucrative deal with Netflix working in its favor.
03:44
No, no, no. Brown sprinkles at the ice cream bar? Do you think I'm planning a funeral?
03:49
Give me rainbow!
03:50
And that brings us to FOX. Where else could we start but the little show that could,
03:54
Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The Andy Samberg cop comedy from Universal Television isn't a ratings
03:59
breakout, and it came with a price tag and a licensing fee that ultimately wouldn't work for FOX.
04:04
The network dropped the show, fans like Mark Hamill and Lin-Manuel Miranda screamed
04:07
from the social media rooftops, and NBC revived the comedy a day later for a 13-episode 6 season.
04:13
Fans also weren't happy when Lucifer was canceled after three seasons, but the DC
04:17
entertainment drama was a victim of FOX shifting to a new direction of broad affair
04:21
produced in-house. Like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, post-apocalyptic comedy The Last Man on Earth
04:25
is critically acclaimed, but a ratings underperformer. It was canceled after four seasons
04:29
despite its cliffhanger finale. But sources say Will Forte's series could be shopped to Hulu.
04:34
Also wrapping up at FOX, Zooey Deschanel's New Girl after an abbreviated seventh season,
04:39
Caitlin Olsen's sophomore comedy The Mic, and The Exorcist, which underwent a
04:42
casting reboot in its second season, as the anthology-like series also lost leading lady
04:46
Geena Davis.
04:47
I never do what people expect of me. Didn't see that one coming, did you?
04:53
Let's wrap up with NBC, where we have some bad news for great news. The Tina Fey-produced
04:58
workplace comedy became part of the critical conversation in season 2, which helps make up
05:02
for a .9 in the demo with seven days of delayed viewing, but wasn't enough to get it a third season.
05:08
The Brave, meanwhile, was another freshman military drama which ultimately fell out of formation
05:13
despite landing the prime post-voice slot to open the fall season. Jennifer Lopez's procedural
05:18
Shades of Blue will wrap after three seasons, but Lopez still has a packed schedule as she's
05:22
slated to star in NBC's live musical Bye Bye Birdie and judge the network's unscripted series
05:27
World of Dance. Also falling off the NBC schedule, Rise starring Josh Radner, medical drama
05:32
The Night Shift and Taken, the reboot of the Liam Neeson film that got the hook midway
05:36
through its second run. Luckily for fans, the remaining episodes will be taken to Saturdays
05:40
after May sweeps.
05:41
And there you have it, the broadcast shows that won't return for the 2018-2019 season so far.
05:46
Head to thr.com slash upfronts for ongoing coverage including details on what's renewed, cancelled
05:51
and new series orders, plus trailers and first-look photos. In the meantime, which dearly departed
05:56
show will you miss the most? Let us know in the comments. For The Hollywood Reporter News,
