Sheryl Crow and Mick Fleetwood chatted with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet of the 2023 Grammy Awards.
Transcript
00:00What does it mean to you to be here tonight and be able to do this tribute to Christine?
00:04Well, for me, it's very deeply personal because I loved not only Fleetwood Mac and was heavily influenced, still am heavily influenced by them,
00:13but Christine as a songwriter and just as a person in general, really loved her.
00:19She and Stevie both have been, I mean, just huge influences on me, but also to get to honor her with Mick,
00:25like, I don't know, it makes it feel so much more sacred and somber and also with Bonnie, who she's another one.
00:32If it weren't for her, I wouldn't be who I am, so it feels really special and deep.
00:37Why do you think this song, Songbird, was the perfect song to sing tonight?
00:41Oh, my goodness. I mean, Mick can speak to that probably better than I can.
00:44For me, it's like a hymn. It's like a moment of saying that everything is going to be okay
00:50and that you're wishing the best for everything and everyone, and so it's really a nice, I think, a nice send-off.
00:58What's your favorite Fleetwood Mac song of all time?
01:01Oh, my gosh. I mean, Gold Death Woman, Landslide, You Make Love and Fun, Say You Love Me.
01:14I mean, there's so many. I can't even narrow it down. There are just too many great ones.
01:19I think Mick Fleetwood's going to join us now. Sure, come in, both of you. Join the party.
01:25Thank you, thank you.
01:26We were just talking about what a special tribute this is going to be. What does this tribute mean to you?
01:31Well, no doubt, selfishly, it immediately sparks the fact that it's part of the closure of,
01:39I don't really realize she's left. So that, in a way, is a help. The song is a prayer, if you think about the song.
01:50And the fact that it's been delivered here in a public forum, I think, is actually a lovely thing to know has happened
02:01for all the lovely people that enjoyed her music. And having Cheryl and Bonnie deliver this very beautiful song,
02:10which is poignant in itself, and being now represented is even more of a poignant thing for me,
02:22to be standing next to these lovely ladies. And I hopefully keep time and do that properly, hit a bongo or two.
02:33I'm just going to not look at him, because I'll be a blubbering idiot, so...
02:39Were the rehearsals hard to make it through at all? Any emotional moments come up for you?
02:44I didn't hear you, actually.
02:45Were the rehearsals for this hard to make it through? Was it a really emotional process preparing for this?
02:49There was a hint, I think, for all of us, speaking for myself, where I thought, I'm not going to go there, for sure.
02:58And I think that's the lovely thing about performing, is just letting things run their course.
03:10But I think today and tonight will be a very special moment.
03:16Cheryl, when you were asked to join this tribute, what was your reaction?
03:19I mean, for me, it's an honor to get to honor Christine.
03:23I do give it up to her, I give it up to the entire band.
03:29But Christine, you know, there's so many people whose shoulders I've stood upon to figure out who I am.
03:36And she, as a songwriter, as a singer, as a blues, I would say a bluesman, a blueswoman,
03:42I mean, she's been an incredible inspiration and example for me.
