Visually impaired Dr Noorilham Ismail received his PhD on Nov 29 at Universiti Malaya, defying all odds with the support of his wife and assistance from Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.

00:00Completing a PhD is challenging for anyone, but for 35-year-old Dr. Norilham Ismail,
00:10the journey demanded extraordinary determination due to his visual impairment. Losing his eyesight
00:17eight years ago after a severe fever could have derailed his ambitions, but he soldiered on with
00:23the unwavering support of his wife Zarifa Arsani. Zarifa helped him with the technical aspects of
00:30his thesis and accompanied him on research trips abroad, traveling to the United States and United
00:36Kingdom in 2023 to comb through archival materials crucial to his study. Dr. Norilham also thanked
00:44Human Resources Minister Stephen Sim for helping him to complete his doctorate focusing on the
00:50U.S.'s role in the Falklands War during his graduation at University of Malaya on Saturday.
00:57At the beginning of my PhD journey, I started with my own money. So when I was in a training time,
01:06I got an assistant from the Tokyo Foundation and then I was helped by YB Steven Sim to
01:15help my travel to the United States.
01:20At the graduation ceremony, Sim said Dr. Norilham is an inspiration not only to the disabled community,
01:27but also to the general public. He said he first met Dr. Norilham two years ago, introduced
01:33by a long-time friend who is also a visually impaired lecturer at the university.

02:33A total of 686 graduates received their doctorates
02:39at this year's convocation,
02:41including Star Media Group Deputy Executive Editor Dr. Christina Chin.

02:53reminded graduates that PhD holders represent a small community
02:57that chooses to explore the Sahara of knowledge

03:07The convocation, which runs until December 10th,
03:09will see 11,356 graduates receiving their scrolls,
