Kaohsiung Pride Brings Out Tens of Thousands in Southern Taiwan

Tens of thousands of marchers took to the streets of Kaohsiung's Fengshen district on Saturday for the city's annual pride parade. This year’s theme, "Voting With Pride" focused on next year's local elections. Organizers say they hope to promote equality and encourage a more gender-friendly society.

00:08which took place on Saturday in 7th Taiwan.

00:14with many expressing hope for a better future

00:17for Taiwan's LGBTQ plus community.

00:30For the first time, the parade took place in Kaohsiung City's Fengshan District.

00:38Its theme, Voting with Pride, focused on next year's local elections.

00:42Blending themes of pride, rainbows and voting,

00:45organizers say they hope candidates can listen to the voices of diverse communities

00:50and ensure that gender equality is no longer overlooked.

00:53Taiwan became the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in Asia in 2019.

01:14But issues of resource access and discrimination still affect Taiwan's LGBTQ plus community.
