00:00On My Life on the D-List, I didn't know that, like the Kardashians, I should have been renting
00:05another freaking house and then lying and saying it's my house. I let strangers in my house like
00:10constantly. Hey everybody, it's me Kathy Griffin with The Hollywood Reporter and I'm going to
00:17share my Hollywood first with you guys. The first thing I watched that was so funny it made me want
00:25to actually go into comedy was Joan Rivers because I hadn't seen anyone like her and my parents
00:32thought she was a riot and my siblings thought she was a riot and you know inappropriate humor
00:38of course had its place. The first time I stepped on stage it was at the comedy store. I have this
00:45magical set like I'm not saying I get a standing ovation but people are legit laughing and like
00:50clapping everything. Okay I swear to god after that one freaking few minutes at the comedy store
00:56I bombed for two years. Two years! The first person I met, this is really hard because now I'm so old
01:05I've kind of met everybody, but who left me really starstruck may have been Robin Williams who later on
01:11became a mentor and I will always owe him and be so grateful to him. He would take time and give me
01:17notes and one time we were both on, if you remember a show, there used to be a show called Comic Relief
01:22and I bombed so horribly that like people wouldn't even talk to me and Robin came over and he's like
01:28I'm so sorry I think I touched on one of your topics before you said I didn't know you're going to talk
01:33and I was like you don't have to apologize at least you're talking to me. So I'd say he's probably the
01:39first person that like knocked my socks off because he was he was so magical whether he was on camera or not.
01:47The first major award I won was honestly probably one of my gay awards. I have a Gracie which is the
01:55women's awards which I'm proud of. I have two Emmys and I have a Grammy and I'm one of only four women
02:02to win the Grammy for best comedy album in the entire history of the Grammys. I'm quite famous for getting
02:08in a lot of trouble for when I won my first Emmy when music artists or bimbo actors go up and thank
02:17God and thank Jesus for choosing them to win the award that night and I just think it's funny that
02:25that's what people think God is doing. I said and if you think Jesus had one thing to do with this Emmy
02:32she certainly did. In fact suck it Jesus this award is my God now. Probably the first time I got in like
02:39international trouble.
02:42The first feud in Hollywood I probably had was with like knowing me probably the head of some network
02:48like as my mother would say I was used to you're kissing the wrong ass. That's your problem Kathleen
02:54kiss the right ass next time. I had this feud on and off for years the great the one and only
03:00Barbara Walters. So I know of course as a news icon and as a groundbreaker for women and of course she
03:07created the show The Vu. Take a minute to enjoy The Vu. So Barbara couldn't stand me. I would try to
03:13torture her as much as possible like if she would go in the restroom I'd go in the restroom and bang on
03:18her stall. You don't have to follow me in the bathroom anymore. I loved her every minute of it. I
03:23couldn't help it. The first time I learned about reality television is I was lucky enough to be doing a gig
03:29with Nick and Jessica. So remember Jessica Simpson and Nicholas Shea when they were married they had a
03:34show and I had just I think made the deal for Kathy Griffin my life on the d-list and they were so
03:41helpful. One thing Nick said which was funny which is he said one of our rules was absolutely no shooting
03:49in the bedroom like we need one room in the house because you know on my life on the d-list I didn't
03:54know that like the Kardashians I should have been renting another freaking house and then lying and
03:59say it's my house. I let strangers in my house like constantly. The first opportunity I turned down
04:08that I regret oh this one kills me is they wanted me to do the daytime host the daytime version of the
04:14weakest link. Was it even the 2000s? I think they brought Anne back remember the red-haired English
04:19lady but I think about it in the asshole I was in that meeting like I just don't know if I can be
04:26taken seriously as a comic if I do this because then I'm a game show host. I should have taken that
04:31gig and said thank you. The first thing I would like people to think about when they hear Kathy
04:35Griffin is d-list. I want them to think of an episode of my life on the d-list that makes them
04:41laugh to this day if they saw it or if there's one of my 21 stand-up comedy specials that you like
04:48or have a joke that you use when you're feeling down. That's what I hope for is to take you when
04:54you're on a day when you need a laugh and give you that laugh. All right you guys this has been
04:57fun thank you for listening to my Hollywood firsts. I know I got a little rambly but apparently they
05:02call that content. All right you guys I'll see you next time thank you for watching.
