00:00I have to tell you something. I've been dating this girl. She's white. A white girl!
00:05So far, this summer's movies have featured superheroes. Pirates, knights, mummies, and
00:11autobots. But seriously, breaking through all the temples is something a little bit different.
00:17We're talking about a small and heartfelt film called The Big Sick. Here are five things you
00:22need to know about a movie you need to check out. Okay, so what is it? I'm glad you asked.
00:27The Big Sick is a romantic dramedy starring Kumail Nanjiani of Silicon Valley as a Pakistani
00:33stand-up comedian who has an American girlfriend played by Zoe Kazan. In addition to navigating
00:39their cultural differences, the couple also endure a life-changing twist when Emily contracts
00:43a mysterious illness and she's put into a coma. Holly Hunter, Ray Romano, Anupum Kerr, Bo Burnham,
00:50and Aidy Bryant are also among the cast. The movie is based on Nanjiani's real-life romance
00:56with his wife, Emily V. Gordon, a writer on The Carmichael Show and with whom he co-wrote
01:01the movie's script. The two first met when she heckled him during a stand-up show in Chicago
01:06in 2007 and then he asked her out. But since she turned out to be a Christian and he's a
01:11Muslim, he had to hide the relationship from his observant Pakistani parents. Nanjiani told
01:16producer Judd Apatow about their relationship's unique start and Apatow pushed them to turn it
01:21into a movie. Michael Showalter of Hello, My Name Is Doris directs. Up next, let's talk
01:26about the sickness of the big sick which remains unnamed throughout most of the movie just as
01:30it was to Gordon herself for much of her life. After eight days of tests while in a medically
01:35induced coma, she was diagnosed with adult onset Stills disease, also known as AOSD, an extremely
01:42rare form of arthritis that can shut down major organs when left untreated. The autoimmune disease
01:48is extremely rare and its cause and ultimate cure are still unknown. However, the condition
01:53is relatively manageable after diagnosis. Gordon told The Hollywood Reporter's Ashley
01:58Lee that when she does have an episode, she forces herself to rest for a few days and take
02:03medication. Nearly every critic is infected by the big sick. It currently has a 97% fresh
02:09rating on Rotten Tomatoes and The Hollywood Reporter Review calls it funny and tender. It was immediately
02:14acquired at Sundance for a whopping $12 million, which is huge. The movie is also particularly
02:22relevant. It first debuted in January just as Trump announced his Muslim ban. Yet Nanjiani,
02:28who based his on-screen parents on his own family, says this movie is an accurate portrayal
02:33of Muslims, which is rare to find in pop culture. Amazon Studios and Lionsgate released the film
02:39in five theaters this past weekend and it earned $435,000 for a robust screen average of $87,000.
02:47The feel-good movie will be out in more theaters nationwide on July 14th and won't be going
02:51away anytime soon.
02:53We're already seeing people seeing the big sick twice, said Bob Burney, president of marketing
02:57and distribution for Amazon Studios. It's a really sweet rom-com and Michael was able to balance
03:03the romance and the comedy perfectly. I think it will build and play all summer.
03:08So, that's what you need to know about the big sick. What's your take on the new based
03:12on real life rom-com? Do you plan on seeing it or have you watched it already? Let me know
03:17in the comments, guys. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Paul Costabile.
