00:00RRR winning Best Original Song at the Oscars was a major win for South Asian representation,
00:05and while there was much to celebrate, it wasn't without controversy.
00:10RRR made history at the Academy Awards on Sunday night by becoming the first
00:15ever homegrown Indian movie to take home an Oscar for Best Original Song,
00:19with the film's crowd-pleasing number, Natu Natu.
00:22Many celebrated the win, including even Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who tweeted,
00:33exceptional, the popularity of Natu Natu is global. It will be a song that will be remembered for years
00:38to come. The celebratory moment wasn't without some awkwardness, however, thanks to a major flub by
00:43Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel. At one point in the night, Kimmel mistakenly referred to RRR as a Bollywood
00:49film, when it's actually a Telugu-language movie that was produced in the southern region of
00:54India known as Tollywood. Bollywood refers to the Hindi-language filmmaking tradition centered in
00:59Mumbai. Being that the two have drastically different ethnic identities and cultures,
01:03Kimmel's flub sparked outrage, with many RRR fans taking to Twitter to express their disappointment.
01:09Indian actress Deepika Padukone later set the record straight when introducing the night's
01:13performance of Natu Natu, clearly stating that RRR is a Telugu film.
01:18However, many on social media also took issue with the performance,
01:21as viewers called out that the dance number seemed to feature little to no South Asian dancers,
01:26and how the Oscars had worked with non-Indian choreographers Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo to
01:31create the number. For more details on the story, head to THR.com.
