00:00You just got married, and you go into the castle and you want to carry her over the threshold.
00:07I'm gonna carry you.
00:08What?
00:09I'm gonna carry you across the threshold.
00:10Oh no, Ian, please.
00:11It's kind of hilarious, as well as being tragic and sad.
00:15Duke Vargaal will carry his duchess into Inverere Castle.
00:19He'd been divorced twice, she'd been divorced once.
00:22It wasn't like it was like, oh, the first blush of young love.
00:25Like it wasn't what was supposed to happen.
00:27I'm sorry, but I just, I don't like it.
00:30I can't put you down. Everybody's looking.
00:32Oh no, you're gonna drop me.
00:33I'm not gonna fucking drop you.
00:34Will you please put me down? Please.
00:36As soon as her feet hit the ground and he puts her down, that's the beginning of the, like, the fairy tale is very much over.
00:43Welcome to Sex Lives and Photographs, making a very British scandal.
01:00I'm Boyd Hilton and I'm joined by the stars of the show in person, Claire Foy and Paul Bettany, and by the excellent creative team, Anne Suitsky, the director, and Sarah Phelps, the showrunner.
01:10This episode is all about the drama that led to perhaps the divorce case of the 20th century.
01:16Claire, what was their relationship really like?
01:18I think that there was a very physical relationship and a very instant chemistry that they had.
01:25Captain Ian Campbell.
01:26Captain Ian Campbell.
01:27I know who you are.
01:31There was a lot of similarity in the way that they behaved and their interests and things like that that they recognised in each other and that they realised was exciting about each other.
01:39But that doesn't, isn't going to sustain a marriage.
01:42And you didn't consider that it might upset me when I put so much work into this day?
01:46I didn't give you a second thought.
01:48But what I love is there's one scene in particular where you see it turn from genuine hate.
01:54You'd like to kick a man when he was down, don't you?
01:56If I liked kicking a man when he was down, I would have stamped you to pieces on that bath match.
02:00Into something similar to desire.
02:04I'm being a horrible bastard.
02:06Yes, you are.
02:07Why do you put up with me?
02:08No idea.
02:09I'm going to take you out for dinner tonight.
02:12Make out for being such an incorrigible, selfish prick last night.
02:17They could be intimate with each other, like they can be close, loving towards each other because of how disgustingly they've treated each other.
02:24Yeah.
02:25It's especially sickening to watch you be completely charming to Jane and then foul to me.
02:29Well, it's easy to be lovely to Jane. She's delicious and sexy.
02:34Your old man's going to need Spanish fly to keep up with her. She's wasted on him.
02:43The two of you go at it in quite a kind of shocking, brutal way.
02:47What is the...
02:48What is the...
02:49What is the...
02:50What is the...
02:51What is the...
02:52He never sees her as a human being.
02:54He doesn't see human beings as human beings.
02:56Whereas she believes that...
02:57Until the end, I think she believes that we love each other.
03:00Well, I saw the whole thing as kind of a very intense, cruel love story.
03:05So this cruel love story where two self-obsessed people set their minds to destroy each other.
03:11And looking at that as kind of this weird battle where nobody could win.
03:17What do you want?
03:18We've played a spirited game, but we both know you don't have the guts for this.
03:22Do we really?
03:23She did do terrible things. Terrible shocking things.
03:26Ian did terrible shocking things.
03:28We all do terrible shocking things when we're painted into a corner.
03:31Hadn't you better take your seat?
03:34In the matter of Argyle versus Argyle, the court now calls Margaret, Duchess of Argyle.
03:41Perhaps she's complicit in the game that he thinks that they're playing, which is a sadomasochistic game.
03:48And in the end, she opts out.
03:52I think it sort of destroys him.
03:54I thought that was probably one of the most fascinating things about this project.
03:59Seeing how far both of them went in that destruction.
04:16There was a hole in that man.
04:18No money, no woman, no castles in Scotland, no drink, no drugs.
04:24Nothing could have filled that hole up.
04:28Did you both get into the whole truth of these historical figures?
04:33There are so many rumours about them, for example.
04:35Did the Duchess really sleep with dozens, possibly hundreds of men, for example?
04:39Did the Duke serially ruin women's lives?
04:42Did you get into all of that?
04:43Yes, he did.
04:44Yes, he did.
04:45Fact.
04:46Fact.
04:47you didn't mind?
04:48UmâŠ
04:50yes.
04:51But I'm never one to let the truth get in the way of a good story.
04:54HowâŠ
04:57HowâŠ
04:59How dare I, perhaps?
05:03OK⊠here's a thought, Margaret.
05:05Pay the b⊠the⊠bills.
05:08It's what you're for.
05:10I don't know whether the Duke, the real Duke was, sort of, some malignant narcissist
05:16psychopath or whether he was suffering from PTSD from you know he was 70 pounds
05:24when he came back from prison and war camp what you whether he was self
05:28medicating I don't know those things but I can I can make assumptions that make
05:33it less boring to play and hopefully more entertaining to watch than just him
05:38being a bad guy for some reason you broke into my home and you stole private
05:44property as your husband I have every right to enter our shared domicile and I
05:48have every right to enter the cast that I bloody well paid for no you don't I had
05:55you banned yeah and I think that I had a slight problem with Margaret in the sense
05:59that the stories that you heard about her were so brilliant and really bold and
06:06kind of out there and but the difficulty is you're still receiving information
06:10about a person as opposed to someone exhibiting it yourself like all the
06:13interviews you see her first she's incredibly straight-laced she's
06:15incredibly proper I knew I loved him I knew I wanted to save in Verrera
06:21desperately barely what he felt I don't know you would never think that that
06:27woman was living some sort of kind of debauched sexual life I think they
06:32sort of probably hoped that they would be able to live a different sort of life
06:37where the only law was they would never bore each other and to people with
06:43narcissistic tendencies and would have been better off with a codependent rather
06:49than finding each other yeah yeah it was bad chemistry experiment
