At the premiere of 'Suburbicon,' director George Clooney and star Matt Damon weighed in on the sexual harassment conversation following accusations made against Harvey Weinstein.
Transcript
00:00Since the New York Times published an explosive expose on disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein
00:05on October 5th, more and more victims of sexual harassment have been encouraged to speak publicly.
00:11Also speaking out in one way or another, stars like Jessica Chastain, Brie Larson, Patricia
00:16Arquette, Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen. On Sunday at the premiere of his latest directorial effort
00:22Suburbicon, George Clooney once again added his voice to the debate. Clooney told reporters about
00:27the recent allegations against Weinstein and others. What we hope is this is a watershed moment
00:32for society where women feel safe enough to talk about this issue, feel believed, and where men
00:38who are committing these crimes and violations don't feel safe and feel as if they do these things
00:43they're going to be outed, sued, and may even get litigated and go to jail for it. Clooney also spoke
00:48out against Woody Allen who told the BBC that since the allegations against Weinstein have been made
00:53public, Hollywood has created a witch hunt atmosphere. That's a stupid thing to say, said
00:58Clooney. He added, it's infuriating. And it's also infuriating when I read stories about reporters who
01:04did investigations and didn't print it for 10 years. Then you go, why didn't you print that story?
01:10I would have liked to have seen it. And I would like to know who brought actresses up to Harvey
01:14Weinstein's room and then left. I'd like to know that. Clooney's Suburbicon star Matt Damon added,
01:20I really do believe there's going to be major change. There won't be this type of behavior
01:24anymore. Damon pointed out the power of social media during this time. Said the actor,
01:29Social media has been great in the sense that these really brave women who stepped up first
01:33and who took that chance and made their voices heard allowed all of these other women to understand
01:38they're not alone. It's turning into this avalanche and that's what's needed. As for what he hopes to
01:43do to be a part of the major change, Damon quipped, I've been in the business for 20 years.
01:48I know a lot of great men in this business and men who don't use their power in that way.
01:52He added, everybody's got a new awareness about it now. For more from Clooney and Damon,
01:58head to THR.com. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Neha Joy.
