Hiver 1862. Pendant la guerre de Sécession, l’armée des Etats-Unis envoie à l'Ouest une compagnie de volontaires pour effectuer une patrouille dans des régions inexplorées. Alors que leur mission change de cap, ils questionnent le sens de leur engagement.
