The thoughts of Launceston head coach Ryan Westren on today's defeat at Devonport Services.
Transcript
00:00We're here with Launceston head coach Ryan Weston after today's defeat at Devonport.
00:06Ryan, a tough afternoon for your side, what were your thoughts?
00:09Yeah, very tough and unfortunately the game got away from us early and that then meant that we couldn't really build into the game,
00:16we were chasing it right from the get-go so in terms of, you know, from a coach's point of view,
00:22I want to say we didn't get a crack at it but you know that comes down to us, we gave them too many opportunities
00:26in the wrong areas early in the game and they're a good side, you know, the best we've come up against
00:31and that's fairly evident but they punished those mistakes and you know after minute 20 we're chasing
00:37the game so that you know that's not how we want to build into the game, put our shape on it but you
00:42know that wasn't something that we could do today. 43-8 down at half times, sort of staring down the
00:48barrel, you must have been pleased though with the response, obviously the game is done at that point
00:52but to go out there and pick up a bonus point shows your character on the side. And that's what we
00:56said at half time, you know, our first aim now is to go and get that bonus point and then see where
01:00we're at after it but you know like you said the game is gone and but that brings with it some
01:06opportunity as well, that's why you know that bonus point you know they probably thought the game was
01:09won and it gave us that maybe that couple of percent off that gave us that chance to chase the game
01:14down and you know we got the bonus point in the end so we could have lost 29-22 and still got the same points
01:20from it so yeah in that regard I'm happy that we keep the points ticking at least.
01:25You have a week now until XMath, how do you go about working on the mistakes in training to ensure
01:31that that doesn't happen again? Well you know you've just got to keep turning up and working
01:34hard on a Tuesday and Thursday, you know we're a team in progress, we've had some change of personnel
01:37which in the long run will only benefit us so you know we're not going to go away and make drastic
01:43changes, we'll keep working hard, keep working on the way that we want to do things and hopefully next
01:48week we come out and get back at home, two home games in a row now so hopefully we can get back
01:53on the in some form and push through. And XMath is the start of those two games, what are you
01:59expecting from them? They're obviously another one of the sides at the top end of the division.
02:05Yeah you know we've had thick and fast of good teams, no Lydney, Devonport, XMath, all of those
02:09those top teams but we showed last week that we can compete in patches today but you know we just
02:15won't know the races today so hopefully we can have a reset this week and get back against
02:19XMath next week who we sometimes go all right against, you know they're a side that suits maybe
02:24the way that we play so hopefully next week we're having a chat and it's a different story.
02:28And what type of game will you expect against them? Well they're a big physical side, got some real
02:33good like you know some strike runners, guys that are some good individuals so we need to make sure that
02:38we're ready to front up in terms of the collision and stuff like that and obviously they've got a new
02:43coaching staff so I'm not sure how they do things a little bit but over a lot of the same playing
02:47personnel so big collisions, deal with their powerful runners and if we deal with that then hopefully we're in the shop.
