David Byrne on people romanticizing the 1970s in New York City: "There were jazz clubs and discos in lofts in Soho and other places."
Transcript
00:00Yeah, people romanticized the grit and the dirt.
00:02On some level, it was good because the city was kind of on its knees,
00:08so it was ignoring a lot of stuff.
00:10People could have, there were like jazz clubs and discos and stuff in lofts and stuff in Soho and other places.
00:21And the city just kind of turned a blind eye to all this stuff.
00:27These places were far from legal.
00:29Artists would kind of live in, musicians would live in these lofts or apartments or whatever and pay very low rent.
00:38It's kind of shocking how low the rent was, but that's how funky the neighborhood was.
00:43And that allowed all of us to kind of get a foothold.
00:48Let's go.
