The Tingling Mother's Circus — A Circus Of The Mind 1968 (USA, Psychedelic Rock)
Hostled in New York City, the original lineup included virtuoso guitarist Elliot Randall… The band debuted in 1967 with the single "Face In My Mind." While the single vanished without a trace, it caught the attention of Musicor Records, which quickly signed them. The album "A Circus Of The Mind," recorded in 1968 with producer Bob Schwartz, is best described as "an interesting mess." Musically, the quintet clearly sought to find a compromise between serious music and commercial success. "An interesting mess"—there's no better way to describe it. It's just some kind of genre madness, all rolled into one... The album is an ambitious project conceived as a circus performance of two acts. Musically it consists mostly of pop/rock songs some of which were evidently intended to aspire for a wider radio airplay. It owes a lot to psychedelia with horns, fuzzy guitars, country, folk influences. The album didn't sell at the time of its release, but it is now a rare collectors' item. Despite its total commercial flop, it has a very strong and fresh feeling, the songs are catchy, but not kitchy, and there are some very nice and thoughtfully done arrangements.
