'GLOW's Britney Young Reveals How Her Plus Size Character Became A Fan Favorite: 'She's Actually Real'
Transcript
00:00Hi guys, I'm Brittany Young. I play Carmen on Glow, which is now streaming on Netflix. Check it out.
00:04I'm very overwhelmed and very humbled. I mean, to say, a lot of people have said I'm the fan favorite and have said I'm the breakout star.
00:11I don't know if I necessarily think that just because I'm so proud of these girls and I'm so proud of our show as a whole.
00:16So to kind of single me out, I really appreciate it, but I'm also still kind of like, ooh, what?
00:21But I think people are relating to her because she's actually real, and I think that's the one reason why I related to her.
00:27A lot of her issues, a lot of her anxieties, her insecurities, even her happy moments are all things that we all experience.
00:34And I think that's what fans are really kind of gravitating towards, seeing like, oh, I've experienced insecurity or I've had a panic attack, anxiety in my life.
00:42And they see her go through it and it's like, oh, someone knows exactly what I'm talking about.
00:46So I think that's why people are really drawn to her. And I love it. I love Carmen. She's so great.
00:52So I'm glad that people are so excited about her.
00:55I think it was something that when we were shooting it, we were all inspired by each other, like specifically myself coming in there and having to do this physical act where I felt a little nervous that I might hurt, like these smaller girls.
01:08And I really was drawn towards Kia Stevens, who plays Tame slash Welfare Queen.
01:12She took me under her wing and she was like, wrestling is not about size. It's about communication.
01:17It's about sharing this experience with your partner.
01:18And once you get that, these little girls are going to be throwing you around the ring just as aggressively as you would be throwing them.
01:24And I think once we all understood that, that's when we started pushing ourselves to do more and express more with our bodies.
01:32And I think that's where the empowering feeling came from it, where it was like, all right, we've now like taken one block out of this wall.
01:38We're going to knock the whole entire thing down and just go for it.
01:40So I think that audiences are really kind of just relating to seeing us being like, no, we want to keep pushing it.
01:46We want to go farther.
01:46And especially for women in a predominantly male environment that wrestling is, like to see women go into this physical place and just completely kick butt, I think is something that we haven't seen on TV before, like this really raw grittiness of it.
02:02So I'm glad that we could portray all the sweat and stinkiness that comes along with wrestling.
