Transcript
00:00As hard as it was to lose my friend, it's been even harder to manage his affairs.
00:04Oh, no, he didn't.
00:06He made me an executor of his estate.
00:08Ten million.
00:09This is the first season without Alan Arkin's Norman,
00:12but it almost feels like he's still a driving force this season
00:16and his memory is sort of a character.
00:18How would you say Norman's presence is still felt throughout the season?
00:22Oh, yeah.
00:23Well, I mean, to have a comedy like Kaminsky Method
00:26and start off the third season with Norman's funeral, you know, is dangerous areas.
00:33I remember when Chuck showed me the script, he said, are we really going to try this?
00:36I said, yeah, let's just go right for it.
00:39And it's one of the reasons why I love the show.
00:42So obviously we find out that he has willed my character, Sandy,
00:49and my daughter, Sarah, a substantial amount of money.
00:53And we find also that he's been integral in getting me a lead role in a feature film movie.
01:01Alan's spirit is well, well enmeshed in our third season.
01:05The heart of this show is always about the friendship between Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas.
01:10This season, it becomes a huge part of the series
01:14because Michael Douglas' character deals with the loss.
01:18And you sometimes appreciate a friendship more when you realize what you've lost.
01:23So it's very much a part of the show.
01:25Hello, ex-wife.
01:26Hello, ex-husband.
01:27What's up?
01:28I think we might be planning a wedding.
01:32Your role as Sandy's ex-wife, Roz, is expanded this season.
01:36What made you want to sign on to have a bigger role in the show?
01:39Oh, come on.
01:41I mean, the writing.
01:43You know, Chuck Lorre's scripts are fantastic.
01:46And the attraction of, I mean, when he called and described to me
01:50how these characters would evolve, you know, develop.
01:55It was very, very attractive.
01:57And of course, it's Michael.
01:59Yes.
01:59You and Michael Douglas starred together in several films in the 80s.
02:02What was it like working together again after all these years?
02:06Easy.
02:06We went through a lot together, you know, through the jungles,
02:10through the desert, in the chandelier, for God's sake, you know.
02:14So it was easy to fall back.
02:17I mean, fall back together in our rhythms, in our acceptance.
02:24Effortless.
02:24You know, I couldn't believe it was 31 years ago since War of the Roses.
02:29But we've kept up a bit over the years.
02:32But once we start acting together, it's just effortless.
02:36You just feel so comfortable.
02:38It just sort of slides right in.
02:41You know, it works great.
02:43You fall in love with a man whose best days are behind you.
02:47What?
02:48Oh, oh, oh, oh.
02:49She's a daisy hooky.
02:50Nothing sexier than an old guy can't get out of his own car.
02:53This is the third and final season.
02:55What will you miss most about the show?
02:56Not Paul.
03:00No.
03:00Yeah.
03:01I'm such a, you know, I'm such a sentimental person.
03:06I'll miss the people, I think, the most.
03:09It's not going to be the same group assembled in the same way again.
03:13So I'll miss getting to play this character and to play with all these other wonderful characters
03:20that Chuck and the actors have created.
03:22I'll miss the ensemble.
03:24I'll miss the good writing.
03:27So it's a combination of all of it.
03:29But any way you look at it, it's going to be a good memory.
03:32And that's all I'm hoping for at this point.
03:34Each work situation that you're in, hopefully it leaves you with a good memory.
03:39When I was a kid, I didn't dream about being an acting coach.
03:42I dreamed to be an actor.
03:46I love the season's message that it's never too late to achieve a dream.
03:50When you look at your decade-spanning career, what's one dream you still want to achieve?
03:54Oh, wow.
03:55Well, I've been doing this for 40-some years.
03:59I've realized a lot of my dreams.
04:03I'm working on teaching, on really learning how to be a great teacher.
04:08I enjoy it tremendously.
04:10I want to direct more.
04:12I want to, I mean, I have all these years of experience, and I want to use them well.
04:21I feel like I've done everything I need to do career-wise.
04:25I mean, I love my work.
04:26But I'd love to see some peace on Earth, you know, goodwill towards men.
04:32I work a lot with the United Nations.
04:34I think we're in some conflicting, difficult times.
04:40Maybe these flying saucer sightings become more real.
04:45It'll scare the hell out of all of us, and we'll kind of sober up and get on with making the world a better place.
04:51Let's get on.
04:52Let's do it.
04:57Let's get on.
05:01Let's get on.
