'Poor Things' star Ramy Youssef shares what it was like working on the film, what his Artists 4 Ceasefire pin means and more at the 2024 Oscars.
Transcript
00:00Tell me about the pin that you're wearing today.
00:02Yes, this pin is for artists for ceasefire.
00:04We have so many artists here tonight wearing it.
00:07We're all calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
00:10We're calling for the safety of everyone involved.
00:13And we really want lasting justice and peace for the Palestinian people.
00:16And so it's something that I think, even if a lot of that feels like a lot for people,
00:20we really want to say, like, let's just stop killing children.
00:23And there's so much there to process.
00:25And it feels like the easiest way to have a lot of the conversations people want to have.
00:29Is when there isn't, you know, an active bombing campaign happening.
00:33And so we just had the State of the Union.
00:35Joe Biden called for a ceasefire, says that it's what we need, said that we need a Palestinian state.
00:41So these are really important things that I think a lot of us are being vocal about,
00:46at least from a human level, you know, to try to appeal to people's hearts.
00:49Yeah.
00:50You're here tonight at the Oscars with Poor Things.
00:52What has been the highlight of your award season journey with the film?
00:56I mean, honestly, getting to be with the cast.
00:58They're so amazing.
01:00It's such a great group of people.
01:02And I've really, really enjoyed getting to know them.
01:06And it's almost a little bittersweet that it's going to end tonight in terms of just regularly getting together.
01:12But truly friends for life.
01:14So this is the big award season finale.
01:17I've been asking people who has been your award season BFF, your best friend through this award season.
01:22It can be somebody from the cast or another nominee that you've met.
01:26I would say my BFFs this award season, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Emma Stone, like just the coolest group, really just making it fun, making it like a grounded thing somehow.
01:43They're all really effortless.
01:44And so it's nice to be with them.
01:45The world of the movie is so mesmerizing and unique for you.
01:50What was it like living in that world and getting to play in that world as an actor?
01:55Oh, it was a dream.
01:56I mean, it's such a creative expression to go and get to be funny, but in the weirdest way possible, in a really grounded way.
02:02To get to embody a character that's so different than anything I've ever played.
02:07And to get to do it with Yorgos Lanthimos, who's truly one of my favorite directors.
02:12I've been with him since Dogtooth, just a fan, a real, genuine fan.
02:18And so getting to be in his film, completely surreal.
02:22Yeah.
02:22What would it mean to see the production design team honored for helping create that world?
02:27It would be so cool.
02:28The amount of detail that they put in is obviously apparent in the film, but I really can't stress, when we were on that set, it felt like we were in a real house.
02:37It was so few facades.
02:38Everything incredibly thought out.
02:40There's no way the camera could catch how much detail was there.
02:43So there's two parts to the set design.
02:45There's the part that the audience can see, but then there's the part that allowed us to be able to be more embodied as our characters because everything felt so real.
02:53So I'm really, really hoping that that team gets recognized tonight.
02:56And after this whole awards season journey is over tomorrow, what's the first thing you're going to do?
03:03Probably get up on stage, do some stand-up because I'm getting ready for SNL.
03:07So that's a couple weeks away and just figuring out my monologue and yeah.
03:12What are you most excited for with hosting SNL?
03:16I think just getting to spend a week in such a fun comedy environment.
03:21I know a lot of the writers and they're people I'm really excited to get to collaborate with.
03:26Do you have a favorite era of SNL that you've loved during the decades?
03:32The Will Ferrell years.
03:33Without a doubt, Will, probably the funniest comedic actor to me, you know.
03:40And so really, really, yeah, those were the years that I truly, truly loved.
03:44But I also, so much of what's happening now with the digital shorts and so many of the inventive sketches, it's such a great show.
03:51I loved the episode of The Bear that you directed.
03:54Do you have more directing plans coming up?
03:56Yeah, it's definitely something that I am excited about, especially in the feature space.
04:01I might do a little bit more of The Bear depending on if we can figure out the timing.
04:04But it was really nice to jump into a different production, work with different actors and just get to kind of make an episode, especially for The Bear that was kind of just a little bit outside of that ecosystem.
04:15I got to go and just explore Copenhagen and just eat a lot of food.
