00:00Go ahead, Michael, please.
00:01Okay, yeah, I was talking about the 360 a little bit more,
00:05and I know we talked about this in a previous episode with Ryan.
00:08Who was your friend we talked to?
00:10Oh, Greg Kanessa.
00:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:12We talked to him about Xbox Live Arcade,
00:14and so I kind of want to get your perspective
00:17on the push for Xbox Live Arcade.
00:19What was that like?
00:20Because it was such a key part in what you were doing
00:23with bridging the gap between Xbox and the community
00:26and then pushing these indie games or these smaller-scale games
00:30as another way to engage with the platform
00:33and discover things that people wouldn't find otherwise.
00:37So there was a discoverability aspect to it,
00:39and so I kind of want to get your insight on that.
00:42Yeah, I mean, that was always internal.
00:43I mean, that was, first of all, Greg, I adore him.
00:46He's a great friend.
00:47I haven't talked to him in a long time.
00:48But when they came and we were working on Xbox Live Arcade,
00:51it was exactly, Michael, exactly what you said,
00:53but it was also another thing
00:55that was really critically important.
00:58This was the first managed device
01:01that had an app store.
01:04Think about it.
01:05Steam had come out, but that was on PC,
01:06so it was open.
01:07Pre-iPhone.
01:09Precisely.
01:09Yeah.
01:09So this is the very first time a device that was managed,
01:13meaning you couldn't just open and put any operating system
01:15or really, you know, it was a managed device,
01:17that we had a curated app store.
01:21That was the first one.
01:22Wow.
01:22So we didn't realize what we were stumbling into,
01:25but the most important part of this was,
01:28hey, here's a game.
01:29You can download it now.
01:31It was the beginning of that generation
01:33because the games, remember,
01:34they all had to be under a certain file size
01:35and so on and so forth.
01:36So it was a real amazing thing that we did there
01:41that when you look back,
01:43you're like, well, of course.
01:45But looking down there,
01:46and I could tell,
01:48there's certain moments in my career
01:50that I could tell there's going to be,
01:51that were incredibly special.
01:53That was one of them.
01:54I said, this is the beginning of a new era.
01:56The other one, unfortunately,
01:57was horse armor.
01:58Oh, great.
01:59Yeah.
02:00Oh, man.
02:01Because that goes hand in hand, right?
02:03With being able to-
02:04Yeah, that's exactly right.
02:05Building an app store,
02:06it's like,
02:07the benefit is I got downloadable games.
02:09I got small size games.
02:10I can play it right now.
02:11And there's a sense of connectedness
02:14and immediacy that is now expected,
02:16but was not bad.
02:16Because again,
02:17people take it for granted
02:18because now we've got always connected devices
02:21that you can do iDep video and download anything.
02:23But you didn't have to go,
02:24I could sit on my couch
02:26in the middle of a blizzard
02:27and download a game.
02:29Boom.
02:30Yeah.
02:30But as a consequence, too,
02:32it paved the way for microtransactions
02:34that rub people the wrong way.
02:35And I'm not going to say that that's abuse,
02:38but everybody was testing different ways to-
02:42I don't want to say exploit it,
02:43but use that system.
02:46Yeah, for sure.
02:47I mean, yeah,
02:48I have vivid memories,
02:51of course,
02:51working at OXM of the original Xbox
02:55after Xbox Live had come online.
02:57There were some publishers
02:58that were testing the waters then
03:01with free DLC,
03:03like Ubisoft specifically.
03:05They added, I think,
03:06two X-
03:07One of them was called Kona Cell.
03:09They added extra emissions for free
03:11to Splinter Cell.
03:13Yes.
03:14But eventually, yeah,
03:15of course,
03:15it became a paid thing.
03:17And now the whole-
03:19Now, like,
03:20does it kind of-
03:21Do you think it's a little crazy, Larry,
03:25that the entire world
03:27is microtransactions now?
03:28Like, when you fly on an airline,
03:30it's a microtransaction.
03:31Like,
03:32microtransactions are everywhere now.
03:34And they arguably started
03:36with the 360-
03:37It's your fault.
03:38No, no.
03:39You know what?
03:40Patient zero.
03:40There's two things
03:42that I kind of
03:42smile at the corner of my mouth
03:45with when it happens.
03:46One is exactly that.
03:48You know,
03:48wait,
03:49my car,
03:49I want to unlock heated seats.
03:51What's going on here?
03:52I would know.
03:53Two,
03:53it's when I see the gamification
03:55because we did that
03:56with achievements.
03:57So there's two areas
03:58where you can look back
03:59and draw a direct,
04:01solid line
04:02to those two elements specifically.
04:05And, of course,
04:05then, of course,
04:06we talked about the app store,
04:08the managed app store.
04:09So do not-
04:10You know,
04:10the Xbox 360,
04:11great gaming platform.
04:13We're not going to deny that.
04:14But this is a great opportunity
04:15to talk about
04:16all these other innovations.
04:17And that's where
04:19I'm so incredibly proud
04:21to have been part of that team.
04:22It was a dream.
04:23It was an absolute dream.
04:25Yeah.
04:27On the-
04:28Since we're on the topic
04:28of this, too,
04:29it's like being the face
04:30of a community
04:31and having to interface
04:32with a lot of the fans,
04:34like when there is
04:35kind of pushback
04:36on, you know,
04:36microtransactions
04:37or like the-
04:39Because the growing trend,
04:39people were like
04:41pretty fiery about it.
04:42It was new
04:42and they didn't know
04:42how to react.
04:43And now it's kind of like
04:44we roll our eyes sometimes
04:46or we just accept it.
04:47But like at the time,
04:48like how hard was it to
04:49like kind of be the-
04:50It was hard because
04:50this was a new era.
04:54This was a new paradigm.
04:56This was something that-
04:57And I don't-
04:58I would have done the same thing.
04:58Like, oh my God,
04:59what's going on?
04:59I don't understand it.
05:01But, you know,
05:02fortunately,
05:02we had developer partners
05:04that some of the DLC
05:05was high quality.
05:06You know,
05:07Brian talked about
05:08some of it was free.
05:09So everybody was really
05:10experimenting
05:11with this framework
05:13and this platform
05:14that we helped develop
05:15and someone's going to be successful.
05:17At the end of the day,
05:17it's the numbers, right?
05:18It either,
05:19it's going to sell
05:20or not sell.
05:22Larry,
05:23recently,
05:24you had posted
05:25on social media
05:26showing off
05:27your never turned on
05:30launch team
05:31Xbox 360
05:33that was only distributed.
05:34It was a special,
05:35special version
05:36distributed only
05:37to the people
05:38that worked on
05:39launching the 360.
05:40so I'm not going
05:42to ask you
05:42to turn it on
05:43because God only knows.
05:45Let me,
05:45let me,
05:45do you want me to get it?
05:46Let me get it for you.
05:47Yeah, get it.
05:47Okay, get it.
05:49Special treat for those.
05:50And then I have a question about it.
05:51Yeah, special treat
05:52for those who watch
05:53the video version.
05:54Look at this.
05:57So I've got,
05:57I've got two
05:58that sit up on the shelf
05:59behind me.
06:00Yeah.
06:00Two things.
06:01So one is here,
06:02here's the launch console.
06:03Yes.
06:04And you can see it.
06:05Again,
06:06we designed the console
06:08to be either horizontal
06:10or vertical.
06:11Right.
06:11And doesn't it,
06:12feet on the bottom.
06:13Does the hard drive
06:13have your name
06:14or gamer tag engraved on it?
06:15Do I remember that correctly?
06:16Sure does.
06:17Yeah, it does.
06:18It's out of,
06:18there it goes.
06:19Just focus.
06:20Come on, focus.
06:21Come on, focus.
06:22I'll bring it back here
06:23a little bit.
06:23But it's,
06:24in fact,
06:24in fact,
06:25let's not forget,
06:26Ryan.
06:27It snaps off.
06:28It popped off.
06:29Yeah.
06:29So here is,
06:31you know,
06:31here it is.
06:32There it is.
06:32Major Nelson
06:33with the concentric rings
06:35over there.
06:36That's so sick.
06:37And,
06:37or the,
06:37and so this is,
06:39this is,
06:40has never been turned on.
06:41And then,
06:42oh,
06:42by the way,
06:42we've got this little,
06:43you know,
06:43I made this at the bottom.
06:45Yeah.
06:45It's got some really cool stuff
06:47in here.
06:47This has never been turned on
06:49because I remember getting this
06:50and I was so proud
06:52that I was on the team
06:53that made this.
06:56And I,
06:57I was like,
06:57I'm going to save this
06:58because this is going to be something.
06:59And here we are
07:0020 years later.
07:01And this,
07:02this,
07:02this,
07:03she looks as new
07:04as the day
07:05that I took it out of the box.
07:06I mean,
07:06picking this up,
07:07I just get emotional.
07:09I mean,
07:09I don't know if you can see.
07:10I understand that.
07:11Yeah,
07:11I can definitely understand that.
07:13The,
07:13the production date on this
07:15is manufactured
07:16October 9th,
07:182005.
07:19So like first run
07:20of the retail units,
07:21basically.
07:22very,
07:22very first run
07:23of the retail unit.
07:24And also,
07:25it's funny,
07:25we also forget
07:26it had a proprietary
07:27power adapter.
07:29Yeah.
07:29Oh yeah.
07:30It had a proprietary
07:31AV adapter.
07:32Yeah.
07:32Yep.
07:33It had,
07:33this was a USB over here,
07:35which was new above the ethernet.
07:36And then we had the two USBs
07:37behind the,
07:38behind the port in the front.
07:39Yeah.
07:39This is before HDMI was,
07:41was the standard.
07:42Yep.
07:43Long before.
07:44So I sitting on my shelf
07:45behind me,
07:46I've got that,
07:46but the other thing
07:47that's really precious to me,
07:48and I don't think anyone's
07:49ever seen this.
07:49So I'm,
07:50this is maybe an exclusive.
07:51Whoa.
07:51Take it.
07:52World premiere.
07:54This is a mini Xbox 360
07:57that contains all of the custom chips
08:00that we did.
08:01That is awesome.
08:01That's so cool.
08:03And this was given
08:04to our partners
08:05that were,
08:06that helped us realize
08:07the vision of Xbox 360.
08:09So this sits on the shelf
08:11behind me
08:11as a reminder of
08:13the power of partnership
08:15and just what it takes
08:18at the end of the day.
08:19This is this,
08:20these chips did all the hard work.
08:22I don't know which one
08:22was responsible
08:23for red ring of death,
08:24but these chips did the hard work.
08:25I've never seen that before.
08:27And I know,
08:28that's why I wanted to
08:28bring it out for you.
08:29I didn't even know
08:29that was a thing.
08:30That is super cool.
08:31So if you're,
08:33after 20 years at Microsoft,
08:35if your Microsoft stock
08:36did not allow you to,
08:38will not allow you
08:39to retire comfortably,
08:40you could sell those two things
08:42and probably,
08:43you'd probably be
08:44very, very set to go
08:45for the,
08:46for the remaining years
08:47of your life.
08:47I will say this
08:48is I have nothing bad
08:49to say about the company.
08:50They, I was there.
08:52I had the time
08:53and ride of my life.
08:55Um, and it is,
08:56it is, it is, it is,
08:57it is one of my greatest
08:58professional achievements
08:59without a doubt.
08:59So I'm, I'm proud to say
09:01that I work there
09:01and I'm proud that,
09:03that what we built,
09:04that so many people
09:05were interested in it
09:07and, and just really,
09:08because really at the end
09:09of the day,
09:09I don't know if you've ever
09:10heard us say this,
09:12we built it for ourselves.
09:14And we had the greatest time.
09:16And, you know,
09:16one of the funny things
09:17was, is we used to have
09:19to, back in the day,
09:20Ryan, I don't know
09:20if you remember this,
09:21um, we used to have
09:22to take the service down
09:23like overnight
09:24when it was being upgraded.
09:26And so it was a big deal
09:27because we would bring it up
09:28and then it would only
09:28allow us internally
09:29on our IP numbers
09:30to hit it once it came
09:32back online.
09:32So we all had disks.
09:34We all had to go
09:34to our office and test
09:35the disk that it could
09:36log in and it worked.
09:38So there were hundreds
09:38of us with hundreds
09:39of disks each,
09:40every single game.
09:41And it was,
09:42we always used to say,
09:43wow, okay,
09:43I guess we need to
09:44open up Xbox Live
09:45to the rest of the world
09:46now because it was,
09:47we knew who it was
09:48and so we had fun with it.
09:49And it was like,
09:49okay, come on in
09:50everybody else.
09:51Oh, so good.
09:53Last question on the,
09:56on your launch team
09:57360 there.
10:00Do you,
10:01is,
10:01is that device
10:02that was in your hands
10:04moments ago,
10:05could that be the last
10:07surviving example
10:08of the blades dashboard?
10:09Because that's what's
10:10baked on there right now.
10:11I'm actually going to tell you
10:13another little secret.
10:14Yes,
10:14it probably is.
10:16Um,
10:17but it must be protected
10:18at all costs.
10:19Yeah.
10:19Everybody's like,
10:20don't turn it on.
10:21And to be honest with you,
10:21I don't even know if I could
10:22find the power supply anymore.
10:24But the funny thing is,
10:27is I remember we talked,
10:28I talked a moment ago
10:29about how there's moments
10:32in your life that you realize
10:33you don't realize a day later,
10:35you realize at that moment,
10:36this is a significant moment.
10:38Yeah.
10:38And I remember,
10:40I believe it was August 15th,
10:422005.
10:43We were in a meeting.
10:45It was the middle of August
10:46and we were deciding
10:49if this build number,
10:50we had to send the build number
10:52to manufacturing
10:53because they had to start
10:53making them.
10:54Right.
10:54And this build number 1888.
10:57That is what you took
10:58out of the box
10:58that gave you the blades
11:00right there.
11:00So I remember 1888,
11:02it's like seared in my brain.
11:04So I remember seeing that meeting
11:05and engineering
11:06and test and QA
11:07and everybody going,
11:08yep,
11:081888,
11:09that's the one,
11:10let's go.
11:10And there was a little party
11:11after that.
11:13Because we didn't have,
11:14because remember,
11:14we didn't have a way to,
11:15we didn't really have a way to,
11:17we had to ship something there
11:18that we,
11:18that system updates,
11:20day one updates
11:20were something that hadn't
11:21really been invented
11:22or adopted yet.
11:23So we didn't have that concept.
11:25Yeah.
11:26I mean,
11:26I remember you're,
11:27you're reminding me,
11:28I believe it was
11:29mid to late September.
11:31So like a little over
11:32a month later
11:32at OXM,
11:34we got our 360s.
11:36Yeah.
11:37Because,
11:37you know,
11:37we,
11:37in the magazine,
11:38we're working like
11:39two months ahead
11:40and this was,
11:41you know,
11:41we would be doing everything
11:43way ahead of time.
11:44And that was,
11:46I remember
11:47that we were like,
11:48we were all like adults
11:50on,
11:50but except like kids
11:51on Christmas morning,
11:52but we were all adults.
11:53Like it was,
11:54that was a special day
11:55with the day that we got
11:56all of our 360s
11:58and could actually start.
11:59You know,
12:00we took so much care
12:01in the packaging
12:01and the branding
12:02and the,
12:03just everything about it
12:04was bespoke
12:05and we loved it
12:06and we,
12:07we,
12:07it was handcrafted.
12:08I mean,
12:09I know in one of the
12:10earlier videos you were,
12:11we had one of the designers
12:13talking about,
12:14Ryan,
12:15do you remember
12:15how we used to describe
12:16this profile?
12:17The inhale,
12:18right?
12:19Exactly.
12:19This was the console
12:20inhaling before it explodes
12:22with energy.
12:23Yes.
12:23And so we had this whole
12:24design philosophy of,
12:26and,
12:26and I remember going
12:27into the Millennium D,
12:29I was on the third floor,
12:30I don't remember the number,
12:31but it was the design lab
12:32and we had sample consoles
12:34that we would design,
12:35there's like a year and a half
12:36or two years before
12:37of what it was going to look like.
12:38Cause at the end of the day,
12:38you pull the console apart,
12:39all it is is a,
12:40you know,
12:40it's a PC board,
12:41but what is it going to look like?
12:43And I remember looking
12:43at all the different ones
12:44and I would go in there sometimes
12:45and just seriously,
12:47this is how intense we were
12:49and how much I loved what I did.
12:50I would sit in there sometimes
12:51with the lights low
12:52looking at each one
12:54and then I'd go over
12:55and turn it on its side.
12:56How would it look under the TV?
12:58And just really getting,
12:59like vibing with each individual one
13:02and this one always came to the top.
13:04Damn.
13:05I love that.
13:05Yeah.
13:06Oh man.
13:08I mean,
13:09it's also like being part
13:11of the community
13:11and like being involved
13:12with the team.
13:13Like,
13:14you know,
13:15this was a,
13:16this was a pretty state-of-the-art
13:18piece of tech,
13:18especially in gaming
13:19and especially in 2005.
13:22Like this,
13:22we had never experienced
13:24HD gaming before.
13:25Like having a set,
13:26having this run at 720p
13:27was crazy
13:28for off of a console.
13:30But with that
13:31push in technology
13:32also came like a lot of,
13:34you know,
13:35difficulties along with that.
13:36And you had mentioned
13:37the red ring of death.
13:37So like when that started
13:40to become pretty prominent
13:41within the community,
13:42like how did you,
13:42how did y'all handle
13:43that internally?
13:44And I know that there
13:45was initiatives to get
13:46your 360 fixed
13:47and without cost.
13:50But I think like that,
13:51that's,
13:51that must be like such a,
13:52like it's like,
13:55how do you handle that internally?
13:56And how do you like
13:57be the face of the community
13:58when things like this
13:59are happening?
14:00Yeah.
14:00Was there,
14:00was there a moment
14:02where you were,
14:02where it just dawned
14:03on all of you
14:04that were,
14:04you were,
14:05you were like,
14:05oh,
14:06this is bad.
14:07I'll tell you this.
14:08I have a very peculiar
14:10sixth sense
14:11of things like this.
14:12And I remember seeing
14:13a couple of things
14:14pop up in the Xbox forums
14:15when we had forums.
14:17And I remember calling
14:18the head of the ATG,
14:19which is our advanced
14:20technology group.
14:21And I said,
14:23hey,
14:23I'm,
14:24something's going on here.
14:25I think
14:25this isn't right.
14:28And he's like,
14:29well,
14:29we looked at it.
14:30And then that's when
14:31I remember
14:32I was like,
14:33you know,
14:34I had been at Microsoft
14:34full time for four
14:35or five,
14:36five years at this point.
14:37I got pulled into a meeting
14:38with Robbie Bach
14:39and they're like,
14:40what is the community saying?
14:41And then he,
14:42Robbie and Peter,
14:43they're like,
14:44and,
14:45and Jay,
14:45they're like,
14:45we got to do the right thing.
14:47And that's when they had
14:48to go to Steve Ballmer
14:49and say,
14:49it's going to cost
14:50a billion dollars
14:51or so.
14:51I don't remember
14:52the exact number.
14:52I think it was too.
14:53Peter,
14:53Peter told the story
14:54on a podcast
14:56unlocked episode 201
14:57when I had him
14:58and Phil and Seamus.
14:59I,
14:59yeah,
14:59I think it might've been
15:00two,
15:01two Billy.
15:01Yeah.
15:01I mean,
15:02I mean,
15:02I don't remember this.
15:03It's just lose track of it,
15:04but,
15:04and I,
15:05cause it was just so,
15:06I was like,
15:07and everybody was like,
15:08no,
15:08we're going to do
15:09the right thing here.
15:10And that's what we did.
15:11So if you remember,
15:11you got the coffin,
15:12the box in,
15:13you put your console in
15:15and we sent you another console.
15:16So it cost us a lot
15:17of extra money
15:18to do this,
15:19but it was the,
15:20it had to be,
15:21there's Carl.
15:21Oh God,
15:22I love Carl.
15:22He's still there.
15:23And so,
15:24and Albert,
15:25Albert's a dear friend of mine
15:26is that we wanted to do
15:28the right thing by the community.
15:29You trusted us.
15:30You trusted us with your money.
15:32You chose us a platform
15:33and we are going to make it right.
15:35Yeah.
15:36Yeah.
15:36And I think that's,
15:37I mean,
15:38obviously it's the right call
15:40because of me as a kid.
15:41I'm like,
15:41yo,
15:41I want my 360 back.
15:43Like I want to make sure it works,
15:43but I think like it's hard to quantify
15:46what kind of influence
15:47that has in the future.
15:48Like,
15:49yes,
15:49it's going to cost
15:49upwards of a billion dollars
15:51to do this,
15:51but what you get in turn
15:53is like,
15:53you retain the people
15:55that you got in the first place
15:57long-term.
15:58And it's like,
15:59do you quantify that?
16:00Like,
16:00I imagine that's part
16:01of the conversations as well.
16:02Like,
16:02no,
16:02this is the right thing to do.
16:03It's going to cost a lot now,
16:04but trust me,
16:05like when we're talking about
16:07keeping people on your platform,
16:09that level of trust will pay off
16:11and that's hard to quantify.
16:13And it absolutely did.
16:15I mean,
16:15when you look,
16:15it was a hard pill to swallow.
16:17We knew we had to do it.
16:18There's Todd.
16:18We knew we had to do it
16:20and it was the right thing to do
16:22and we knew we would come out of it.
16:24But once we,
16:24once people started saying,
16:25thank you,
16:26I got it back.
16:26I'm playing again.
16:27It's just all of a sudden
16:29Red Ring became
16:30almost a meme
16:31as opposed to something
16:32that could have torpedoed
16:34the brand.
16:35Well,
16:35do you ever wake up
16:37in a cold sweat now?
16:39thankful that that didn't happen
16:43like five years later
16:45when social media had,
16:46like,
16:46if that happened now
16:47to Microsoft,
16:49to Sony,
16:49to Nintendo,
16:50it would be,
16:51it would be absolutely catastrophic,
16:54wouldn't it?
16:55Yes.
16:55Yeah.
16:55Yeah.
16:55It would be absolutely that.
16:58You're right.
16:58Because everybody,
16:59especially now with the,
17:00you'd be,
17:01I would see nothing,
17:02YouTube would be nothing but
17:03of the Red Ring of Death.
17:05Okay.
17:05And it would just be gross.
17:08So yeah,
17:08I mean,
17:09I,
17:10that isn't,
17:11but I'll tell you,
17:11I'll tell you,
17:12gentlemen,
17:13we handled it so well.
17:15The team professionally executed.
17:17It made my job kind of easy
17:19because we just did the right thing.
17:20When you're in,
17:21when you're at this crossroads in life
17:22and you're like,
17:23this is the right thing to do,
17:24everything else lines up
17:26and you as the community understood it.
17:28You embraced us.
17:29You're like,
17:30thanks for,
17:30thanks for doing the right thing.
17:32There's other times
17:33that kept me up late at night
17:34that,
17:35you know,
17:35we could talk about another time
17:36if you want,
17:36but this isn't it.
17:39What were some of your,
17:41this is super open-ended question.
17:43What were some of your favorite memories
17:45from the 360 era?
17:46I mean,
17:46you know,
17:47you kind of touched on
17:48the launch in the desert
17:49and,
17:50but you know,
17:50you got things like Halo 3's launch,
17:52but can,
17:53just what,
17:53what pops to mind
17:54when I ask you that question
17:56of some of those
17:56just highlight memories,
17:59big moments?
18:01It's,
18:02it's,
18:02it's so,
18:03the moment those doors opened up
18:05in Palm and,
18:06you know,
18:06out in Palmdale
18:07when we were doing,
18:08in fact,
18:08I've got my sweatshirt here
18:09for zero hour.
18:10We were there at zero hour,
18:11like,
18:12hey,
18:12let's do a party
18:13in the desert.
18:14We didn't know
18:15if anybody was going to show up.
18:16We didn't know
18:17if one person was going to show up,
18:18a thousand or 10,000,
18:20but all of a sudden
18:21it was like,
18:22it was like out of a movie
18:24where down this dusty road
18:25and the dust is going up
18:27and the people are coming
18:27and coming.
18:28I'm like,
18:28oh my God,
18:29it's happening.
18:30So that happened.
18:31So we knew we had something
18:32and then the doors opened up
18:34and Peter Moore
18:34and Jay Allard
18:35are up on the scaffolding.
18:36I remember being with them.
18:37So that was one.
18:41Just,
18:42we didn't have
18:42the instant feedback
18:43that we did now
18:44of Twitter
18:46and TikTok
18:47and all the rest
18:48of those things.
18:48So just going online
18:50and seeing the stories
18:51and seeing people
18:52love what we did
18:54and then going back
18:55into the Millennium office
18:56and having our engineers
18:57work on the things
18:59and seeing people accept it.
19:01I remember,
19:01I remember so vividly,
19:02you know,
19:04we had back compatibility,
19:05backwards compatibility
19:05on Xbox 360.
19:07Before we announced that,
19:09the engineers
19:09who were working on it
19:10were downstairs
19:10around the hall for me
19:11and I would go by
19:12on my way to lunch
19:13or back from lunch
19:14or to a meeting
19:14and I would always see
19:16this number
19:17in a piece of paper
19:18on the front
19:19of one of the lead engineers,
19:21two.
19:22And it was two
19:22and then a couple days later
19:23it was three.
19:24So meaning Halo 1
19:25and Halo 2,
19:26the number of games.
19:28Nope.
19:28No.
19:29It was frames per second
19:30they were getting.
19:31Oh.
19:32And all of a sudden
19:33they hit a point
19:34and it was now
19:3420, 21, 22.
19:37And it was,
19:37they were going seriously
19:38engineering day by day
19:40to get a frame
19:41every single day
19:42out of the backwards compatibility.
19:44And I remember standing there
19:45and I just,
19:46the shivers came down my spine
19:47because I was like,
19:48this is so cool.
19:50Yeah.
19:50And there's the doors opening
19:51out there.
19:53It was just amazing.
19:54So that's one of the moments.
19:56The other moment
19:57was being down,
19:57I think it was the Halo 3 launch.
19:59Was that New York City, Ryan?
20:00Correct me if I'm wrong.
20:01I wasn't at the like
20:03sort of official launch
20:04because I had had the
20:05great, great, great privilege
20:07of I'd already reviewed
20:08the game at Bungie
20:10like two months before that.
