A robber who fatally kicked, punched and stamped on a vulnerable pensioner before taking off with a box of cornflakes and a cottage pie has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years. John Mackey, 87, was targeted by unemployed Peter Augustine after he visited a Co-op store in Manor House, north London, on the afternoon of May 6.Earlier in November, an Old Bailey jury found Augustine, 59, guilty of robbing and murdering the “kind, generous gentleman” from Callan, Co Kilkenny, who had lived in London for around 70 years.

00:00Peter Augustine killed this gentle, innocent man.
00:23He attacked Mr Mackey for a box of cornflakes, a pint of milk and a Savaloy sausage.
00:30I have no doubt that if the defendant was genuinely starving and had asked Mr Mackey for help,
00:36this kind, generous gentleman would have shared what he had with him.
00:47Today is the end of a journey our family never wanted to take and wouldn't wish on anyone.
00:51Our lovely gentle uncle was taken from us in a brutal act of senseless violence by a man the exact opposite of John Mackey.
00:58Dearly loved by his sisters Betty and Ellen, brothers Tommy and Liam, his 22 nieces and nephews in his community,
01:05John was a quiet, unassuming and charming man.
01:08His loss will always be felt but his memory will live on in the true Irish tradition of storytelling
01:13and there are still many tales to tell.
01:15He will always be remembered with a smile.
