00:00Son, there's something I have to tell you.
00:03The Hollywood Reporter Stephen Galloway spoke with Matt Damon, and they discussed quite a bit,
00:08including Damon's upcoming film, Suburbicon and Downsizing, his desire to direct,
00:14his long-standing friendship with George Clooney, his disdain for President Trump,
00:18and his outrage about Charlottesville.
00:21Suburbicon, which premieres September 2 at the Venice Film Festival, is a dark drama
00:25which tells two stories, one about a seemingly regular family that turns out to be deeply
00:31troubled, the other about a black family that comes under fire when it moves into an
00:36apparently idyllic white suburb. Damon very nearly didn't appear in Suburbicon at all,
00:40having worked for two solid years. He yearned to spend time with his family, but the film's
00:45director, George Clooney, then offered to move the production to L.A.
00:49Suburbicon's last monologue was shot the week of the election amidst the shock of Trump's victory,
00:54and the film's already dark premise has become even more poignant in the wake of the
00:59Charlottesville protests.
01:00A lot of people, myself included, are really waking up to the extent of the existing racism,
01:05and it's so much worse than I naively thought.
01:08I just feel naive at this point. It was shocking to see those kids.
01:11I thought, those people are a lot younger than me. Who raised them?
01:16Damon explains that he naively thought everything was getting better with each generation,
01:20and found Trump's many sides comment to be absolutely abhorrent.
01:26According to Damon,
01:27I thought Jimmy Kimmel's line was the best when he said that Trump said they were fine
01:31people on both sides and showed the clip of the guys screaming,
01:35Jews will not replace us, and cut back to Jimmy saying,
01:38Let's get something straight.
01:40If you're with a group of people chanting, Jews will not replace us,
01:44and you don't immediately leave that group, you are not a fine person.
01:48When asked if living in Los Angeles and being successful isolated him from the rest of the country,
01:53Damon replies that he isn't the right person to ask because he is isolated like a lot of actors.
01:58But in California, New York, the Northeast, he says,
02:01To read Stephen Galloway's full interview with Matt Damon,
02:12which covers his thoughts on the future of film,
02:14his memories of meeting George Clooney for the first time,
02:17the movie he saw recently that he really loved,
02:20and much more, head to THR.com.
02:22And in the meantime, what do you think of Damon's Trump and Charlottesville take?
02:26Will you be seeing Suburbicon?
