The Light Before Christmas returns to Liverpool Cathedral with an all-new story, transforming the historic building with immersive projections, soundscapes and a message of wonder and togetherness,
00:00Stepping inside Liverpool Cathedral at this time of year feels less like entering a landmark and more like walking straight into a Christmas story.
00:10Families, friends and school groups gather under the soaring arches not only to see the building but to see it completely transformed by light, sound and festive colour.
00:19It's such a highlight for the cathedral every single year. This kicks off our overall advent.
00:25We've just had Darkness to Light which is a phenomenally beautiful service and then we go straight into light before Christmas.
00:31It is just that moment where everything starts and bringing so many people together.
00:36We've got 30,000 tickets up for sale at the moment over nine days which seems a little bit insane when you say that out loud.
00:42Bringing that together and everyone just to be here in this space to start the festivities is phenomenal.
00:49It's the return of the light before Christmas now in its fourth year.
00:52According to event organisers, more than 30,000 people take part in the experience each year, making it one of the city's most loved festive traditions.
01:02The scale of it is striking.
01:04Liverpool Cathedral becomes a backdrop for a breathtaking visual journey that blends stunning projections with immersive soundscapes all designed to celebrate the wonder of the season.
01:14Particularly this year with the theme of the gift is for us as a way to bring everyone together.
01:20It's doing something a little bit different in a cathedral.
01:24We are in Liverpool so we do things a little bit different and as Liverpool Cathedral we like to go along with that as well.
01:31It is a show that is for absolutely everyone.
01:34For 2025 there's something new at the heart of it.
01:36The theme this year is called The Gift.
01:38Organisers describe it as an enchanting story that invites visitors to follow the star and experience the nativity in a completely new way.
01:46The projections and music are designed to draw attention to the message of warmth, reflection and togetherness that lie at the centre of Christmas.
01:53It is wheelchair and pram friendly.
01:56We have actually just brought in a temporary lift into the well which is the first part of the story.
02:01Particularly good with the kids as well.
02:03And then we've actually built a temporary bridge over the ambulatory which is beautiful.
02:09It's actually a beautiful selfie spot.
02:10So we are accessible.
02:12It's the same floors overall.
02:15Organisers say that this year's theme The Gift places the nativity story at the centre of the experience.
02:21The theme is The Gift and of course the gift of Christmas is Jesus.
02:25Most of us rush out and buy gifts for other people.
02:28But the true meaning of Christmas is about that gift of a baby.
02:32The light before Christmas, The Gift is at Liverpool Cathedral until Saturday 6th of December.
02:38The only thing is that unfortunately dogs are not allowed this year.
02:43During the show, guide dogs and dogs for accessibility are absolutely allowed.
02:49But because it gets so busy and so loud as flashing lights, we can't allow dogs.
