00:00Who said it up?
00:08Tell you the truth about this.
00:14Everybody else is going to take your view.
00:25Can we get a second barrier?
00:27What do you got?
00:28Stop, stop, stop.
00:30Oh, he's through.
00:32Get him, get him.
00:34This is a case that on its face
00:37looks fairly obvious
00:42as to who the shooter is.
00:47But what actually happened
00:50was so incredibly shocking
00:52that even detectives
00:55and seasoned journalists
00:57couldn't believe it.
00:59Who was behind this series of attacks
01:04of a neighborhood icon?
01:07He was punched.
01:09He was shot multiple times.
01:11Did he get a hood on?
01:12Yes.
01:13And a mask.
01:15He was stabbed seven times.
01:16I thought the car was here.
01:17The entire family was under attack.
01:19It was brutal and crazy and unanswerable.
01:25Somebody got shot in the parking lot.
01:27He's dead.
01:28We had looked at the mafia.
01:31We had looked at the mafia.
01:32Now, we don't know if it's not coming from us.
01:36There is somebody behind the scenes
01:39pulling the strings.
01:41And that begs the question.
01:43Now, anyone can't do this.
01:43No.
01:43You're not early.
01:48No, you're not.
01:49Hopefully, that's a thing.
01:49We don't know what's happening.
01:50That means.
01:55You don't know what's effects on!
02:00Let us know what's happening.
02:02In September 2017, officers respond to an incident.
02:21The incident was recorded.
02:26The victim of the crime was Sylvester Zatola, commonly known as Sally Daz.
02:30He was 70 years old.
02:36He was merely standing outside when the video showed a male walk up to Mr. Zatola,
02:42engaged him in a short conversation, and basically asked him about employment.
02:46Sally Daz says, no, there's no employment around here.
02:49And he had turned around and started punching him several times.
02:55And then all of a sudden, he just started viciously beating him right to the ground.
03:00He had some bruising and he had a broken rib.
03:07It's heartless.
03:08Zatola tells police that the perpetrator was an African-American male, didn't really know the age.
03:21So it's a pretty basic description for a suspect.
03:26So the detectives really didn't have anything kind of go on in this case.
03:29Who's walking up to an elderly gentleman, you know, and beating him like that?
03:33Zatola's backstory is interesting.
03:39He was a guy who was also known in the community as a reputable businessman and a very successful businessman at that.
03:48And his business was real estate.
03:51Eventually, amassing more than $40 million of primarily residential buildings throughout New York City.
04:01His wife died years ago, so essentially he became a single father to his three children.
04:09He had two boys and one girl, Deborah, the daughter.
04:14His eldest son, Salvatore, and his younger son was Anthony.
04:20And also a plethora of grandchildren.
04:24He would tell anybody who asked that his family was the most important thing in the world to him.
04:32In fact, his two sons were brought in to run portions of his business.
04:37He was a fixture of that community.
04:41He had been a supporter, you know, of the police and helped the precinct out a lot during his lifetime.
04:47With security cameras, you know, outside his residence, supplying video to the police and detectives for crimes that occur in and around the area.
04:55He was like the godfather of that community.
04:58It has been widely said that he was like Santa Claus without a beard.
05:01He was a jolly old fellow.
05:03He would be the type of guy who would wave to kids on the street corner.
05:08Everybody knew him.
05:10So why is someone going after him?
05:12Really a gem of the community.
05:15You know, we had a rash of old people getting sucker punched, you know, throughout, you know, New York City during that time as well.
05:22So is it just someone who's following a trend?
05:24It didn't look like it was a full attempt, you know, of his life other than an assault or maybe a possible attempted robbery.
05:33It didn't look like it was a while.
05:37november 2017 sally daz he comes into the precinct speaks to the desk officer telling him he was
05:49driving on the expressway and in front of him and a perpetrator wearing a mask gets out with a
05:54firearm and starts threatening him and tells the first offer he sees that somebody is either trying
05:59to carjack him or kidnap him because you know what else would there be but they do an area canvas
06:05which shows up negative for the perpetrator in the area at this time the two incidents are considered
06:13separate even though it's our same victim because it's a description sally daz gave it's very vague
06:19really at this point both of these incidents are really like a dead end there's no other
06:25investigative information and all leads are exhausted
06:28so a little over a month later 9-1-1 is called for a break-in at the zatola residence
06:38so when the officers respond to mrs zatola's home they find him
06:41he's bleeding profusely on the ground he's been stabbed multiple times and slashed across the neck
06:51somehow miraculously he survived this brutal attack
07:01he tells detectives the little bit that he knew
07:10that he's at home the next thing he knows there's a group of men in there
07:17and there wasn't small talk there wasn't a lot of threats or anything like that
07:26they went right after
07:31and he didn't get any great physical description with the exception of he believed
07:40that these were predominantly african-american men
07:43doesn't appear that there's any fourth entry there's a code to get in how did he have that code
07:57and number two zatola has surveillance camera in his property but guess what
08:05there was no surveillance tape from that incident
08:10they stole the home video surveillance so this starts looking to us as
08:17this might be an inside job someone's definitely trying to kill this guy
08:21but wait a minute why did they want to kill him
08:26are there things that just stays amongst the family and just don't share
08:41mob world family they're not gonna tell nobody nothing the less people know the better it is
08:48because the less people got killed
08:55what do you know about sally that's you know
08:58all you know about sally is that he was a good guy he was affiliated with the banano's
09:02he had friends in in for protection i was with a different family but that's how we got to know
09:08him at all because he was uh in that area was a was a banana area so that's why uh we knew he had a friend up there
09:17in new york city there's five major crime families
09:21and the bananos really took a big chunk of the bronx area
09:27many people don't walk around with a name tag that says i'm in bed with a crime family that's just not
09:38how it works zetola was considered an associate of the banana family
09:44sally himself wasn't in the mafia but he had enough friends and a banana cool
09:51so what makes you a mobster because you you you you got a friend that's a mobster to be able to do that
09:57world doesn't make him a gangster not everybody i think because you know somebody you're a gangster
10:02it doesn't work that way only in maybe on tv or something like that or or or in the real world
10:09no if you're a moron you're a moron that knows a gangster
10:15this guy was a legitimate businessman on real estate and then he was involved with joker poker games
10:22that's how he got started which is a big business
10:25so joker poker is an extremely popular video gaming machine that is sold to and placed in
10:40social clubs and it is very very profitable because there's a lot of money in it
10:48that's not legal no it's not legal you know you can bring in millions you know yearly so
10:55and it's unrecorded it could be so lucrative i know guys got tons and tons and tons of money by
11:00doing that vending like i said it's all under the table so
11:07so sally dad had joker poker machines which he would run anywhere from a basement apartment building to the
11:13the back of the bodega to numerous different commercial locations where they have secret
11:17spots in the back the expectation of sally dad's was to bring food to the you know bring food to the
11:23family that's kind of like how they put it is bringing money kicking money up uh to the banana
11:31crime family to help support the banana crime family so at this point the mafia someone trying to
11:37to whack him and bump him off from his own organization from one of the other families
11:43you know to gain all his profits and take over those joker poker machines or possibly even going
11:49into his real estate and trying to bump him out of real estate now we don't know for not coming from us
11:55you know we could come up from bananos want to take him out or some other family would
12:00try to move in on him we don't know because they don't tell us so several months go by since the
12:12third incident he's off the grid sally laid low which is what you're supposed to do not being flashy
12:19he doesn't stay at the house anymore he has a separate apartment he really buttoned up his inner
12:24circle and that included his kids his grandkids and a couple of mob associates that he does most of
12:33his business with so i i know the bananas they would reach out in the street and see if we knew anything
12:39about it or anybody could find anything about it and they didn't that's what it threw everybody off
12:45at this point it's becoming urgent that if law enforcement doesn't figure out
12:53who is targeting this elderly man he will end up dead
13:07one day in june 2018 mr zatola is walking around in another section of the bronx he's been in hiding
13:22some approaches with a hoodie
13:52on this day zatola is confronted outside of this new location somebody puts a gun into his face is
14:05going to shoot him at point-blank range and kill him no doubt now luckily for sally daz the gun jams
14:13and sally daz has his own firearm on him and fires it at the fleeing perpetrator
14:19so when the police arrive you know the first thing they do is they see sally daz and his son anthony
14:30is a taller can he go inside is that okay not right now mr zatola is a wreck i was walking up 194th
14:41street yes i can i always turn around because i always think there's a car up there you follow
14:45me so i didn't see no car i turned around i see a black guy with a hood on he he walks across the street
14:56that way and he starts coming over to me like this okay and he had a hood on yes and a mask so after
15:03this attempt you know mrs zatola's kids deborah salvator and anthony they're all up in arms about
15:10what happened but at this point what's going through the detective's minds is he's relocated
15:25people who are behind this how do they know where he is right and that's what makes this attack
15:34in june that much more brutal and crazy and unanswerable because he's in a location where
15:45nobody is supposed to know where he is
15:50so what did you see when you saw him with a firearm what did you do
15:52he was returning fire you know to the perpetrator so in self-defense but he has an illegal firearm on
16:10him how many shots did you find one and do you have a little pistol permit no so this is interesting he
16:16ends up getting arrested for illegal gun possession and they they should be checking all these cameras
16:26so listen i can't i can't blame sally dance for carrying a firearm is it illegal yes is he getting
16:32arrested for it yes do i think a grand jury will ever indict him you know no why because he's four
16:40attempts on his life but um the law is the law
16:54when you throw something in this one yeah go go go
17:15get him get him
17:16get him get him
17:21yeah come on you're still there
17:28I don't know.
17:59Finally, in custody.
18:01Really what happens is after this fourth incident,
18:04the perpetrator for that incident
18:06ends up getting arrested a little while later
18:08in Manhattan for criminal possession of a weapon
18:11because he has that illegal firearm.
18:13I got the gun, I got the gun.
18:14And where was the gun drawn?
18:15The gun was right, I saw him throw it.
18:18Over here.
18:19Okay.
18:19Yeah.
18:21The problem is in the Bronx,
18:23we don't get that information that the arrest is made.
18:26The arrest happened in Manhattan
18:29and the attempted shooting was in the Bronx.
18:32And both shootings and gun arrests
18:34happen all the time in New York City,
18:36so neither really warrants any kind of citywide action.
18:40And so both jurisdictions are left in the dark
18:43about what the other had.
18:45And I don't think anybody in law enforcement
18:48thought that these were the same group of perpetrators
18:52or, at the very least, the same group
18:55behind the planning of this.
19:01At this point in the investigation,
19:03now we start pulling jail phone calls
19:05to see who's calling,
19:07talking to Mr. Zatola
19:08to see if they have any idea who it is
19:10or is it them?
19:12Mr. Zatola had very strong ties with Vinny.
19:17And Vinny Bassiano was the head of the Bonanno family.
19:22And not only were they really close friends,
19:26they were also really close business associates.
19:30Vinny, he's actually in jail during this whole incident.
19:33And the sons had approached him with a phone call
19:37to see even if the mafia is involved with this.
19:40Vinny, they think we know who these people are.
19:43I'm like, we have no idea.
19:44We don't have anybody.
19:46And Vinny Gorgeous basically said right off the mark,
19:49the crime families have no involvement with this.
19:52This is something coming from outside.
19:54There's nobody there, you father.
19:55They should push you through this bullshit, man.
19:57Come on, man.
19:58Your father's a good person.
19:59Your father's the salt of the earth.
20:01The salt of the earth.
20:02He helped out everybody.
20:03You know what I mean?
20:03I don't know who's got this problem against them.
20:06And Vinny loved Sally Daz
20:08and for years contributed to the family.
20:10That's not somebody who they would want to get rid of.
20:13It's somebody that he knows.
20:14There's somebody that knows his routine.
20:17All right, bye.
20:18Bye, you don't know who it is.
20:20And if it was, you know, another mafia organization,
20:23another one of those five families,
20:25you know, Vinny Gorgeous probably would have said something.
20:27But we got nothing like that.
20:38One day in July, Zatola's family vehicle stops and parks
20:54at the Zatola family compound.
20:56But it wasn't Sal Sr. who got out of the car.
21:02It was his son, Sal Jr.
21:07And all of a sudden,
21:09somebody was targeting what appeared to be his entire family.
21:17Sal Jr. is shot multiple times.
21:32He's rolling around on the ground.
21:34It's a gruesome crime.
21:36Again, in broad daylight.
21:39It was a life-threatening wound.
21:42You know, and he was rushed to the hospital.
21:44And lucky for him, it was non-fatal.
21:46And he survived it.
21:48It was some big news.
21:50We heard about it when it happened.
21:53We found it strange.
21:56And we found it strange because the shooter was strange.
22:01This guy's half-running, looking for him, trying to shoot him.
22:05I said, that's how you do it.
22:08As somebody who covered this case,
22:11the mob gets it done on the first try.
22:13And this was a case where it was almost like a bunch of bumbling idiots
22:19trying to kill somebody, but always failing.
22:25It was so just unprofessional, you know, the whole thing, you know.
22:28I'll take you three times to go kill somebody.
22:30Takes you two minutes, you get up close and kill the guy.
22:34Was it mistaken identity?
22:39I think it was.
22:41Yeah, 100%.
22:41Do you think this is the real target here?
22:45That day, yeah.
22:47Yes.
22:48Definitely.
22:48So when I look at this incident, you know,
22:54a lot of people say maybe it's a mistaken identity, right?
22:58He gets out and the perpetrator comes up and starts shooting at him.
23:02Maybe he mistakes it.
23:03That is his dad.
23:04I never really looked at it that way.
23:06The way I looked at it as is,
23:07hey, listen, they're going after Sally Daz.
23:09They can't get him, right?
23:11What's the next thing likely to do?
23:13Let's go after a family, you know?
23:15Like, they want his business.
23:16They go after the kid, too.
23:22What this attack showed law enforcement was
23:26that it wasn't just the elder Zatola.
23:31The entire family was under attack.
23:36And that begs the question,
23:37who wants this entire family dead?
23:42There are no leads.
23:45Cops aren't close to a suspect.
23:50And everybody is waiting for the next shoe to drop.
23:53I was a stringer,
24:05a freelance reporter for the New York Daily News.
24:08The guy that goes to the scene
24:10to cover a story in person.
24:14If it's a crime scene,
24:15talk to people,
24:17go to court,
24:18talk to the cops,
24:20things of that nature.
24:20So that day,
24:24the editor says,
24:25well, you might regret this,
24:27but I have an assignment for you.
24:30I'm working on a normal shift.
24:33Salvatore was done recovering,
24:35and we get the call
24:36that there's a homicide
24:37over at the McDonald's
24:39on Webster Avenue.
24:41It's a kind of busy corridor
24:44in West Bronx.
24:46Not a nice place,
24:47to be honest with you.
24:47Fire, medical.
24:48Hi, can you send me
24:50to the ambulance right now?
24:51Somebody got shot
24:52in the parking lot.
24:53Somebody got shot?
24:55Yes.
24:55Anybody know who shot him?
24:57No.
24:58The crime scene
24:59at McDonald's,
25:00and it was an Acura SUV,
25:02maroon-colored car,
25:04just next to the McDonald's
25:05takeout window.
25:08First breathing.
25:08Well, to be honest with you,
25:11I'm inside.
25:12I'm one of the managers
25:13of McDonald's,
25:14and I was taking a order
25:15when I see him
25:15that he would come
25:16and shot the guy.
25:17Okay.
25:17I don't know this man.
25:20I was about to give him
25:21the food when everything happened.
25:23Anybody got a description
25:24of the person?
25:25You know where he shot at?
25:27All we know is somebody,
25:28but we're just taking care
25:29of customers.
25:30Somebody just rides
25:30to the car and shot at us.
25:33While we're en route,
25:34they tell us right away
25:35that it's Sally Daz.
25:38And someone had shot
25:39and killed him
25:39in the drive-thru
25:40at the McDonald's.
25:42So he's in the car?
25:44Yes, he's done.
25:49As a department,
25:51we have the duty
25:52to protect our citizens.
25:54So when you turn around
25:55and you fail at it,
25:57yeah, you get emotional about it
25:58and you want to go out
25:59and find out
25:59who the murderer is.
26:02When we get there,
26:04I'm brought to the rear
26:05of the McDonald's.
26:07It appeared that the vehicle
26:08is pressed up against the building
26:10where the call box is.
26:12Mr. Zotola is slumped
26:14on the steering wheel.
26:17There's a fence
26:18around the McDonald's perimeter
26:20and there's a big hole
26:22in the fence.
26:24And as I learned,
26:26the suspected killer
26:26at that time
26:27snuck into that hole.
26:29The victim, Zotola,
26:33is in his car
26:33and he's driving up
26:34to the drive-in window
26:37and he orders a coffee
26:38and he's boxed in.
26:40There's a car in front of him
26:42and there's a car behind him
26:44so he can't move.
26:45That's kind of like a funnel,
26:46right?
26:47That we're always taught
26:47as police officers,
26:49don't drive through drive-thrus.
26:50Don't go through.
26:51Why?
26:51Because of bottlenecks.
26:53And now all of a sudden,
26:53you're a target.
26:55And so the killer,
26:56when he gets close,
26:59he just fires the shots
27:00and he hits him
27:02in the back
27:03and in the chest.
27:07And we're shocked at that.
27:09We're shocked at why.
27:12I always thought
27:12they were going to rob him.
27:13That's how we could
27:14shake him down
27:15and rob him, you know.
27:16And it just escalated
27:17to him getting killed.
27:19Got killed.
27:20First thing I noticed
27:25walking around the vehicle
27:26was the cluster
27:27of bullet holes
27:28in the side window.
27:32It was a very tight cluster.
27:34So the person
27:34who turned around
27:35and fired this weapon
27:36had a very tight grouping,
27:38which means
27:39he didn't just fire a weapon
27:40haphazardly
27:42into the vehicle
27:42hoping to strike.
27:44He fired that weapon
27:46and those bullets
27:47through that vehicle
27:48and struck him
27:49with precision.
27:50So that tells me,
27:51you know,
27:52that the shooter
27:53has used a firearm before,
27:55that he's proficient with it,
27:57and that he can stay on target
27:58even during
27:59a stressful situation like that.
28:04So I started asking myself,
28:06out of all these other attempts,
28:08I can see a level
28:09of professionalism
28:10has increased.
28:12And I kind of felt
28:14that this could be
28:15a different person
28:16from the last couple of attempts.
28:17One of the other detectives
28:23interviewed the 911 caller.
28:25He had a black hoodie hat.
28:26He looks young.
28:27He looks like a black kid.
28:28But she took cover
28:30and wasn't able
28:30to see his face,
28:31but he had retreated
28:32back up the hill.
28:33A few days later,
28:40I covered the funeral.
28:42The church was packed.
28:44There were like,
28:45maybe at least 300 people
28:47in there,
28:48packed.
28:50And there was this
28:50beautiful photo
28:51of Zotola.
28:54And I'm just looking at him,
28:55look at him.
28:55It's like,
28:56it's like my grandpa,
28:58you know?
28:59It could be my grandpa.
28:59Deborah and Sal Jr.
29:04and Anthony
29:05all gave touching eulogies
29:07about what this man
29:09meant to them
29:10and to this community.
29:12They were devastated
29:14at the news
29:15that they had lost the man
29:17that they were closest to
29:19in their lives.
29:20Debbie, the daughter,
29:23I remember her in tears.
29:25Anthony, too,
29:26had some very nice words
29:27about his father.
29:28He was like,
29:29you were a wise man,
29:30you were strong.
29:32And he would say,
29:33you taught me
29:34everything in life.
29:35I need to make you proud.
29:37Like,
29:37I will do all I can
29:38not to disappoint
29:40the family,
29:41you know,
29:42my brother,
29:42my sister,
29:43especially you.
29:44It was very touching.
29:48There's something
29:49so mundane
29:49about all of this,
29:50right?
29:51You're just ordering
29:51a coffee.
29:52You're just like
29:52an average Joe
29:53ordering a coffee.
29:54And he loved
29:55to get his coffee there.
29:56And that was
29:58his last coffee.
29:59I don't believe
30:01in coincidences.
30:02So I started
30:02asking myself,
30:04okay,
30:04how do they know
30:05where he is?
30:06Are they following him?
30:09The vehicle ends up
30:10getting removed
30:11to really get processed.
30:12We go over the entire vehicle.
30:17They go from top to bottom,
30:18you know,
30:19from the front to the back.
30:20And one of the things
30:21that we end up coming up with
30:23is a tracker on the vehicle.
30:27A GPS device
30:29that is in the wheel well.
30:30It answers some questions
30:32like,
30:32wow,
30:33right?
30:33That's how they've been
30:34tracking them
30:34and that's how
30:35they got them here.
30:36So at this point,
30:37this is like the real
30:38big,
30:39solid piece of evidence
30:40that we had
30:41that could possibly
30:42bring us,
30:43you know,
30:43to a perpetrator.
30:44I know how these things work
30:46and I know that
30:48this thing is talking
30:49to something.
30:50So it's going to be
30:50talking to a cell phone
30:51or to some other device
30:53that's going to be able
30:54to be tracked.
30:55We'd sent it to the lab
30:59and to get it broken down.
31:01So once we start
31:02receiving that information
31:03back,
31:04what do I do?
31:07Just like I have kids.
31:08Every time they get
31:09a new toy,
31:10they want to play with it.
31:13Usually the first thing
31:14that they'll do is
31:15they'll activate
31:16this device
31:17near their home.
31:19So I look at the first thing
31:20that's on that line
31:21of where it is
31:22and that leads me
31:23to Topping Avenue
31:24in the Bronx.
31:25is less than a half a mile
31:28from the crime scene
31:29at the McDonald's.
31:31So then I turn around
31:32and I start my video canvas.
31:34I go up and down
31:35Topping Avenue
31:36and I walk into
31:37this one building
31:37and I go
31:39and I start downloading video
31:40and reviewing video
31:42and I see
31:43the GPS device
31:45being used.
31:46It looks like being tested
31:47by two males
31:49out in front of the address.
31:51And all my other attempts,
31:52they're master hooded.
31:53But these guys
31:54are standing right out
31:55in plain view
31:56and I can see
31:57exactly who they are.
32:03These aren't your mafia type.
32:07At the same time,
32:09a Bloods member
32:10named Ron Cabe,
32:11who was arrested
32:12in Manhattan
32:13a few months earlier
32:14for discarding
32:15that firearm,
32:16came forward
32:17and said to the police,
32:18I've been seeing
32:21all these headlines,
32:22I've been hearing
32:23all of this
32:23about the Zatola murder.
32:25I have information
32:26that you're going
32:27to want to know.
32:29He feels that he's going
32:31to be wrapped up
32:31in this whole thing
32:32and he wants to get
32:33ahead of it
32:33and he wants to cut a deal
32:35and give up
32:36who everybody is.
32:37He tells them
32:39that he was offered
32:41$10,000
32:42from a Bloods associate
32:44to kill an older man.
32:49He was given
32:50intimate details
32:52about the person
32:54that he was going after
32:55from security codes
32:58to where surveillance cameras
33:01were located
33:02in the residences
33:03to routines,
33:06times of day
33:07that the victim
33:08might be home.
33:11And when he went
33:12to shoot and kill
33:13an elderly man,
33:15his gun jammed.
33:19Now the light bulbs
33:20are going off, okay?
33:22Now it's a murder
33:22for hire case
33:23and the people
33:25who are outside
33:26using that GPS device
33:28they're just hired hitmen.
33:30Who's going out
33:31and employing them?
33:32That's what I want
33:32to find out.
33:34But Ra KB does not know
33:36who the handler is.
33:38He doesn't know
33:39who the mastermind
33:39behind this whole thing is.
33:41He just knows
33:42that they were hired
33:43to kill Sylvester Zatola.
33:45But Ra KB tells us
33:47the names of the people
33:48using the GPS
33:49that was used
33:51to murder Sally Datz.
33:54That's Besson Shelton
33:56and that's...
33:58that's Hyman Ross.
34:02I'm giving an opportunity
34:04to kind of explain
34:05what happened that day.
34:08To explain what?
34:09Why don't you tell us?
34:10I don't have enough
34:11attention, man.
34:16We established
34:17probable cause
34:18and now we're turning around.
34:19We're arresting Besson Shelton
34:20at his residence
34:21in Brooklyn.
34:22We tend to imagine
34:25killers of mobsters
34:27as just looking
34:28the way
34:28the mobsters look.
34:30But Besson Shelton
34:31is just a regular guy
34:33from Brooklyn.
34:35Went to college
34:36in the Bronx.
34:38I remember looking
34:39at Shelton's
34:41LinkedIn page
34:42and I was thinking
34:43this is just like
34:44an average guy.
34:46When we do the search
34:47of his residence
34:48we find a firearm
34:49which is not part
34:51of our crime
34:51but we also find
34:53cell phones.
34:53Sean Shelton's
34:57cell phone
34:57revealed text messages
34:59between he
35:02and somebody else
35:04speaking in movie terms
35:06and movie vernacular.
35:09For example
35:10Shelton was referring
35:12to himself
35:12as the director.
35:16And shortly after
35:17the murder was done
35:19he texted something
35:20to the effect of
35:21the movie is shot.
35:23where the movie
35:24is over.
35:26These are cold words
35:28about the murder.
35:29And we start seeing
35:31all the messages
35:32that were going
35:33back and forth
35:34to an unknown number.
35:36So that phone number
35:38is now submitted.
35:39Now they're going
35:40to find out
35:40in the subscriber
35:41information
35:42on who owns
35:43that phone.
35:44And when I get
35:45that phone call
35:45it was probably
35:47one of the best
35:47phone calls
35:48I've ever gotten
35:48in my life.
35:49It was the wow
35:53moment of this
35:55entire case
35:55and probably
35:56in my career
35:57as well
35:57to find out
35:59that his own son
36:00Anthony Zatolo
36:01organized the murder
36:02of his father.
36:03I was like
36:06wait Anthony?
36:08The guy
36:09son
36:10was at
36:11grieving
36:12at the funeral
36:13and just thought
36:14like
36:15who knew?
36:16I think anybody
36:16covering this case
36:18knew
36:18that
36:19there was a part
36:21of this
36:21that was an inside
36:22job
36:23of some sort.
36:24Can he go inside?
36:26Is that okay?
36:32Everything started
36:33making sense.
36:35I mean
36:36he knew where
36:37his father was
36:37all the time.
36:39He knew that
36:39there was video
36:40cameras inside
36:41the residence.
36:42He knew the code
36:44to get into the
36:44back of his house
36:45and to his kitchen.
36:46He knew all of that.
36:48It's very
36:49very rare
36:50that organized
36:51crime will bring
36:53in somebody
36:53from the outside
36:55somebody from
36:57a street gang
36:58to do their
36:59dirty work.
37:03But
37:03Anthony had
37:05to go outside
37:06of their circle.
37:08Boushon Shelton
37:09he's the guy
37:10or the subcontractor
37:11where you go to
37:12and you say
37:13I need this
37:13this and this
37:14and then he finds
37:15the people to do
37:16the job
37:17and who knew
37:17how to pull off
37:18violent attacks.
37:23One thing I can
37:24say is
37:25I had a feeling
37:26you were coming
37:26when I don't know
37:27but I can thank you
37:28that it was
37:29after Father's Day
37:30and it was
37:31after all my kids
37:32breakfast.
37:33Anthony was
37:33arrested
37:34the day
37:35after Father's Day
37:37for his own
37:39father's murder.
37:41He doesn't
37:42have remorse
37:43and that was
37:45the shocking
37:45throughout this
37:47entire
37:47ordeal.
37:48Anthony
37:50played
37:51the loving
37:52son
37:53while
37:54he was pulling
37:55all the strings.
37:56I don't know
37:57for certain
37:58but
37:58I'm not sure
37:59that Anthony
38:00has a soul.
38:04So detectives
38:05are thinking
38:06what's the motive
38:06here?
38:08Once we make
38:09the arrest
38:10we look into
38:11Anthony Zatolo.
38:14Sally Dad
38:14had multiple
38:15businesses
38:15from real estate
38:16to also
38:17Joker Poker
38:18machines.
38:19Anthony was
38:20running
38:20the real estate
38:22arm
38:23of this business
38:24but
38:25the eldest son
38:27Salvatore
38:28was running
38:29the Joker Poker
38:30portion of this
38:31business
38:31and worked
38:32more closely
38:33with
38:34the mob
38:35associates
38:35and
38:37the folks
38:37within social
38:38clubs.
38:39I think
38:40this was
38:40a case
38:41of
38:42Anthony
38:43wiping out
38:44his brother
38:45and his father
38:46wanting
38:47dad's money
38:48wanting
38:49the brother's
38:50money
38:50as the only
38:52way to
38:53ascend in the
38:53family
38:54and become
38:56the guy.
38:57The only
38:59motive
38:59that is
39:00clear as day
39:01is the motive
39:02of greed.
39:05Sally
39:05Sean Shelton
39:20tells the U.S.
39:35attorney
39:35Hyman Ross
39:36was the guy
39:36that was
39:36a shooter.
39:38Prosecutors
39:39said Hyman
39:39Ross was a
39:40violent member
39:41of the
39:41Blood Street
39:42gang with
39:42a felony
39:43record.
39:44I mean he
39:44was definitely
39:45someone capable
39:47of pulling off
39:48a targeted
39:48killing in a
39:50drive-thru.
39:50player.
40:15It took them
40:16over a year
40:17really to succeed
40:18because of the
40:19different players
40:19that they had
40:20involved and
40:21that's also
40:22what kind of
40:22threw us off
40:22during the
40:23days.
40:25You went from
40:25guys who really
40:26had no experience
40:27trying to carry
40:28this out to
40:29at the end
40:30more experienced
40:31guys that were
40:32able to get
40:33the job done.
40:34I think the
40:35most bothersome
40:36part about this
40:38case is
40:39that the
40:40elder Zatola
40:41did everything
40:43for his children
40:44and yet
40:46it wasn't
40:48enough for
40:48Anthony.
40:50Anthony was
40:51still
40:52interacting with
40:53his father
40:54at birthdays,
40:56at family
40:56events,
40:58making money
40:59off of his
40:59father,
41:00meantime
41:01secretly
41:02plotting his
41:03demise.
41:04he
41:09did everything
41:10in the
41:10house with
41:11his
41:13father,
41:14he
41:14said that
41:16he
41:16was
41:16the
41:17other
41:17one
41:17who
41:18was
41:18the
41:18other
41:19he
41:19said that
41:20he
41:20said that
41:20he
41:21said that
41:22it's
41:22that
41:22it's
