00:04The couple has been together for more than a decade, and are widely seen as one of the

00:08strongest pairings in Hollywood.

00:10But even major fans may not know everything about their love relationship, including some

00:15of the not-so-nice parts.

00:17This is just the face of kindness.

00:23Portia de Rossi told Oprah in 2009 that she knew it was love when she first laid eyes

00:28on Ellen at a party back in the year 2000.

00:31However, Portia didn't have it in her to actually truly connect with Ellen until three

00:35years later.

00:36Portia tells the story saying that, at the time, she hadn't come out in terms of her orientation,

00:42adding that she was,

00:43"...very, very afraid that if she talked about her true self, it would be the end of her career."

00:48So I wasn't about to then date the most famous lesbian in the world.

00:53The pair reconnected when Ellen met Portia at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles for

00:58VH1's Big in 04 awards and reportedly started dating not long after.

01:06Portia and Ellen made their first official appearance as a couple at the HBO Golden Globe

01:11Awards party, which was held at the Beverly Hills Hilton.

01:14The couple also moved in with each other in 2005.

01:27She made an announcement of their upcoming marriage on her daytime talk show, and they

01:31officially tied the knot during a summer wedding on August 16th, 2008.

01:36But while everything seemed magical for a few years, it was reported that there may have

01:40actually been trouble in paradise for the couple.

01:43In 2013, stories of impending divorce were spreading like wildfire.

01:48Ellen and Portia were constantly on the cover of tabloid magazines that focused on the demise

01:52of their marriage.

01:54By the end of 2014, the couple was sick of hearing such rumors and seeing tabloid headlines

01:59about their split, and they denied every bit of it.

02:28One such story surfaced in December of 2019 in the National Enquirer with the headline,

02:33Ellen on Scary Spending Spree.

02:36The alleged insider for this story said Portia was disturbed by her wife's spending habits

02:41and was ready to walk after Ellen purchased a $27.5 million home in February, supposedly

02:47without telling her.

02:49However, it wasn't long before this story was debunked by GossipCop.com.

02:54But while these tabloid rumors about Ellen's scary spending spree have been written off,

02:58the story suggested that Portia was ready to leave her wife because of Ellen's careless

03:03spending.

03:04Ellen was quoted a year before this story broke, sharing her attitude towards money,

03:09saying,

03:09While some of these tabloid rumors were hard to find truth in at first, the internet was

03:28completely shook when a tweet thread began exposing Ellen as one of the meanest people

03:34alive.

03:35The tweet thread was started on March 20, 2020, by comedian Kevin T. Porter, saying he wanted

03:41to hear stories from people who have worked with Ellen and have experienced her not-so-kind

03:45side, and that he would match every story with a $2 donation to the LA Food Bank.

03:51Kevin's Twitter was flooded with responses, many of them claiming that Ellen is cruel to

03:55her employees.

03:56While stories from people who used to work with Ellen were upsetting, there was also a

04:00few stories about how Ellen treats her wife, Portia, that rubbed many fans the wrong way.

04:06One tweet had a source claiming they heard that Ellen would often go to the gym with her

04:09wife and not only was a spoiled horror show, but that she also yelled at Portia during every

04:16workout.

04:17If it's not about her potential controlling nature towards Portia's workout routine, it's

04:21about being Ellen's messenger.

04:23One tweet explained that when Ellen is due for a haircut, Portia is often sent into salons

04:28ahead of time to prepare everyone, saying that she has to come in beforehand and try to explain

04:33that it has to be done in five minutes.

04:36Another Twitter user claimed that when Portia was on the television show Arrested Development,

04:41Ellen made it difficult for Portia to get to set most days, and the writers actually had

04:45to find workarounds for any scenes Portia was in.

04:49This particular story led to one tweet which reminded everyone about Portia's acting career.

04:54In 2018, Portia decided to retire from acting, with the excuse,

04:58and I just wanted to try something different, so I started an art publishing company."

05:04The opinion of one Twitter user was that they were convinced the reason why Portia doesn't

05:08act anymore wasn't because she wanted something different, but that Ellen had something to

05:12do with it.

05:13Possibly because Ellen was worried about Portia's fame superseding hers.

05:17Portia's interviews regarding her retirement have also had fans thinking that she seems

05:23less than enthusiastic about quitting acting and are worried that Ellen is being too controlling.

05:28On the flip side, Portia has requested that Ellen retire from the talk show on numerous occasions,

05:34to which Ellen refuses.

05:35In an interview for the New York Times in 2018 titled,

05:38Ellen DeGeneres is Not As Nice As You Think, Ellen said her brother advocates for her continuing

05:43on with the show, while Portia asks her to move on to other projects like a podcast or stand-up,

05:49especially since she would be home more often.

05:51During that same interview, Ellen got a call from her wife, Portia, learning that she had

05:56just fallen off of her horse.

05:58Portia ended up coming out of the accident with nothing more than a concussion.

06:02While Ellen responded quickly with concern, asking if anything was broken, she shifted

06:06gears right after she hung up.

06:08The interviewer wrote that she asked her personal chef for an iced tea.

06:12When Portia arrived at the house later and pleaded her case again for Ellen to stop doing

06:17her talk show saying, I don't see the end of her show as her career ending, Ellen responded

06:21with, you have a concussion, what do you know?

06:24Ellen even took to her show one year after this interview to make sure everyone knew that

06:29she had no intention of giving up the show.

06:31She made the announcement that she signed a renewal for three more years, seeing the show

06:35through the year 2022.

06:37Also saying one reason for the renewal was, Lamborghinis are expensive.

06:41Looks like Portia isn't getting her way on this matter anytime soon.

06:45It's possible that Portia has found herself embarrassed by Ellen's jab in her New York

06:49Times interview, but it's not the first time she's felt shaded.

06:52Portia de Rossi has said on numerous occasions that she's not a fan of interviews and the

06:57press that is required of celebrities.

06:59Knowing this, Ellen still has Portia come on her talk show.

07:02On one episode in 2015, Ellen decided to show some slightly embarrassing photos that

07:07she's taken of Portia to her large studio audience and of course, the world.

07:11While it could be that this was supposed to be all in good fun, Portia was visibly embarrassed

07:16and didn't seem to appreciate the shade.

07:18In an interview on Ellen the year before, Portia was asked questions sent in by fans.

07:23Through one question of, between the two of you, who's the better driver, Portia revealed

07:28that Ellen refuses to let her drive.

07:30In 2019, more intense headlines started surfacing about Ellen and Portia's crumbling marriage.

07:35An insider claimed that Portia hadn't visited the Ellen DeGeneres show offices for weeks,

07:40implying that there really was trouble in paradise for these two.

07:43They also claimed that Portia was already at her wit's end because their marriage problems

07:47had been piling up and they couldn't keep them a secret any longer, saying,

07:51It's pretty clear they're leading separate lives.

07:54As bad as that sounded, the same source found it highly unlikely that the couple would actually

07:58split, saying that there is too much at stake.

08:01While some pieces of this story were later debunked, it's worth noting what actually

08:05is at stake.

08:06Evidently, California law entitles a spouse to get a share of their partner's estate as

08:11soon as their marriage reaches at least a decade.

08:14The couple's marriage turned 10 in August of 2018, which can mean that Portia has the

08:18right to more of Ellen DeGeneres' fortune, which is reportedly worth $490 million, while

08:24Portia's worth is $60 million.

08:27Ellen may even use that $490 million net worth to keep Portia close.

08:32In early 2020, it was reported by InTouch Weekly that Portia had decided to move out

08:37of their marital home in Los Angeles and had been living in another property of theirs in

08:41Montecito for weeks.

08:43A source even claimed that Ellen tries to appease her by giving her whatever she wants, but that

08:48it maybe wasn't always working.

08:50One Twitter user emphasized this same claim, saying that Ellen will use her wealth to appease

08:55Portia.

08:57The tweet read that they were told by someone who had done hair or makeup in Ellen's vicinity

09:00that everybody knows Portia wants to leave, but when she tries, Ellen just buys her another

09:05pony.

09:06And one more inside source told IB Times that Ellen made the idea of Portia quitting acting

09:11to start her art publishing company all the more appealing by helping with the finances,

09:16houses, as well as purchasing lots of properties all over the country.

09:20Ellen's wealth and eccentric tastes has potentially spilled over into her and Portia's relationship,

09:26and how they go about their day-to-day lives.

09:28InTouch said in January of 2020 that the couple have embraced extremely unusual practices to

09:34keep their marriage going, considering they've been married for over 11 years.

09:38Evidently, these strange practices include vows of silence and strict rules which include

09:44using hands instead of utensils and avoiding dining with others in social situations.

09:49An inside source claimed Ellen is known to cut off long-time friends and not talk to them

09:55for years, and added Ellen and Portia are multi-millionaires living in a bubble.

10:00They're out of touch and becoming more and more eccentric.

10:03Ellen's timing to reportedly be more isolated from friends, however, couldn't have been worse.

10:08As of March 2020, Ellen and Portia started social distancing due to the global health

10:13crisis, and are stuck inside together for quite some time.

10:17The couple has been documenting their attempt at keeping busy during their time in isolation

10:21with things like puzzles.

10:23Portia was shown in a video where she explained that she's attempting to learn how to cook

10:27for her and Ellen.

10:29However, she looks somewhat disheveled in the video, frustrated that her recipe

10:33isn't coming out the way it looks in the photos.

10:35While Ellen keeps recording, Portia says,

10:37I just need a minute.

10:38And the moment between the two seems tense.
