00:00Endangered and in demand.
00:10The modest bassoon, an often overlooked member of the orchestra,
00:14now an enviable addition to a conductor's arsenal.
00:18Bassoons are always the kind of humble heroes of the orchestra.
00:22For the special few, like music student Ethan Henke,
00:25who know their way around the unusual instrument,
00:28it's a way of life.
00:30My parents helped pay for my bassoon.
00:32It was about eight grand this bassoon.
00:34They said we'll match whatever you pay for your bassoon.
00:37They said you can either do that or we'll match you buying a car.
00:40And I chose the bassoon.
00:41At the Queensland Conservatorium, whenever people see the bassoon players,
00:45they're always getting high fives and kudos and excitement.
00:48But the woodwind has fallen out of fashion in recent years.
00:52My teacher mentioned how there's a worldwide shortage of bassoon players.
00:56Most schools might have one bassoon player, that's it.
00:58The shortage of up and coming talent means skilled young players
01:02are using it to secure spots at prestigious high schools.
01:06I auditioned for Brisbane State High through my bassoon a few months ago and I got in.
01:13But it all begins here, in the music rooms of primary schools right across the country,
01:17where students hone their skills and hopefully fall in love with the art of orchestra.
01:26Becoming a brilliant bassoonist doesn't happen overnight.
01:29It takes some serious practice.
01:32It's really hard to play, but when you get the hang of it, it's really fun.
