Endangered and in demand.
00:10
The modest bassoon, an often overlooked member of the orchestra,
00:14
now an enviable addition to a conductor's arsenal.
00:18
Bassoons are always the kind of humble heroes of the orchestra.
00:22
For the special few, like music student Ethan Henke,
00:25
who know their way around the unusual instrument,
00:28
it's a way of life.
00:30
My parents helped pay for my bassoon.
00:32
It was about eight grand this bassoon.
00:34
They said we'll match whatever you pay for your bassoon.
00:37
They said you can either do that or we'll match you buying a car.
00:40
And I chose the bassoon.
00:41
At the Queensland Conservatorium, whenever people see the bassoon players,
00:45
they're always getting high fives and kudos and excitement.
00:48
But the woodwind has fallen out of fashion in recent years.
00:52
My teacher mentioned how there's a worldwide shortage of bassoon players.
00:56
Most schools might have one bassoon player, that's it.
00:58
The shortage of up and coming talent means skilled young players
01:02
are using it to secure spots at prestigious high schools.
01:06
I auditioned for Brisbane State High through my bassoon a few months ago and I got in.
01:13
But it all begins here, in the music rooms of primary schools right across the country,
01:17
where students hone their skills and hopefully fall in love with the art of orchestra.
01:26
Becoming a brilliant bassoonist doesn't happen overnight.
01:29
It takes some serious practice.
01:32
It's really hard to play, but when you get the hang of it, it's really fun.
01:39
Good morning.
01:42
We're getting ouroga, I hear fromitate Tutor.
01:44
How long did you get the hang of it while building ì„ ì•„ëž˜?
01:46
Well, here we have to be a wedding in this thing.
01:48
We've got a wedding in this song.
01:49
We made the hang of it.
01:50
It's really true.
01:51
He's actually enjoying that imagine we're going here
01:52
and we see in this lot of season.
01:53
insignificant meeting train we're gliding in the earth.
01:55
We come the holidays out.
01:56
We holdås too.
01:57
We don't love the other girls together,
01:58
but you may not even jump in this time.
01:59
And I try to tien of when we put the Homer intervention back on,
02:00
where I probably did a napkin go.
