00:04OpenAI's shiny new video app, Sora, is having a small but very modern problem.

00:09It may have to delete a perfectly good word from its vocabulary because another app already called dibs.

00:14According to a report from CNBC, a federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order

00:19telling OpenAI it can't use the term Cameo inside the Sora app, at least for now.

00:24The issue is that Sora's AI Cameo feature closely resembles the existing celebrity video platform Cameo,

00:31causing potential legal confusion despite some differences.

00:35In OpenAI's app, a Cameo lets users generate AI videos using the likeness of someone who's opted in,

00:41a celebrity, a creator, or even your friend who uploads their own face into the system.

00:46A judge in California issued a temporary restraining order preventing OpenAI from using a specific word

00:51in AI-generated videos until December 22nd, giving both sides time to prepare their legal arguments.

00:58Cameo says OpenAI's use of the word is causing brand confusion.

01:07in Sora's Cameo feature, things start getting weird, fast.

01:12OpenAI, meanwhile, is pushing back.

01:15In a statement, the company said it doesn't believe anyone should get exclusive ownership

01:19over the word Cameo, which, to be fair, existed long before celebrities started charging $50

01:25to say happy birthday.

01:27Not all Sora videos use the official Cameo's feature, yet users still find ways to generate

01:31famous faces.

01:33Some, like Michael Jackson, are allowed, while others, like Bryan Cranston, are restricted

01:38unless using a character like Walter White, which raises legal issues.

01:41And because no tech saga is complete without a bonus lawsuit, last week Overdrive also sued

01:47OpenAI over Sora's logo, claiming it looks a bit too much like theirs.

01:51Oh, and when Gizmodo checked, Sora was still using the word Cameo anyway.

01:56So for now, it's less temporary restraining order and more strongly worded suggestion.

02:02Sora may be able to generate Hollywood-level videos, but it still can't escape Hollywood-level

02:07legal drama.
