00:28James Dean's brief yet iconic time in the spotlight came to an abrupt end when he died
00:41in a tragic car accident on September 30, 1955, and the details of his death remain
00:47both perplexing and disturbing to this day. James Dean was one of those rare stars whose
00:53persona became more famous than any of his films, and yet he would only live to see one of those
00:58films released. Although he had been working acting jobs fairly steadily throughout his 20s,
01:08James Dean had never abandoned his other lifelong passion, car racing.
01:23He had also purchased a brand new Porsche Spider, which he nicknamed Little Bastard,
01:45and planned to drive in the Salinas Road Race in California. Dean had initially thought to have
01:50the Porsche taken to Salinas on a trailer, but at the last minute decided to drive it himself.
02:05In the early afternoon hours of September 30, 1955, Dean would head out with Porsche factory mechanic,
02:12Rolf Wuthrich to an auto rally in Salinas, California.
02:16Dean and the Little Bastard were pulled over for speeding by a Bakersfield police officer,
02:22who issued a citation for doing 65 in a 55 and cautioned Dean to slow down and be careful.
02:46Dean and Rolf would continue their journey to the Salinas rally and headed out on Highway 466 towards
02:54Cholami, California, unaware of their fate that lie before them.
03:05Meanwhile, near Paso Robles, 23-year-old Cal Poly student, Donald Turnip Seed was heading home in
03:12his 1950 Ford Tudor. He was making a left turn at the intersection of Highways 41 onto State Route
03:18466 unaware of the Spider approaching from the opposite direction. At the last moment,
03:24Turnip Seed pulled back to the right to get out of the path of the approaching Dean.
03:28The two cars collided head-on.
03:31All right.
