00:00Trump ripped for wildly out-of-touch take on the economy.
00:04When Treasury Secretary Scott Besant called critics worries about rising costs a con job in defense of President Donald Trump,
00:11MSNBC's Nicole Wallace just laughed.
00:15The host then branded Trump and his secretary as wildly out-of-touch.
00:19On Deadline White House, Wallace quipped,
00:22Wow, this is what a $600 million Treasury secretary gets you, politically,
00:27before airing Besant's Morning Joe interview.
00:30There, Besant stood by Trump's con job comment, but also acknowledged that an affordability crisis remains,
00:37though he claimed the prior administration is responsible.
00:40I believe even this morning you had two people come on and say,
00:43Wow, I look at the price at the pump and I know costs are up.
00:46Well, gasoline is down, so that is a con job, Besant said.
00:50Trump has previously claimed the economy is strong, saying there's no inflation,
00:56and blaming Democrats for exaggerating cost concerns,
00:58calling their claims a con job.
01:01Anchor Willie Geist followed up by asking Besant whether he believes that voters who had raised concerns about affordability
01:07are just misperceiving what's happening in their lives.
01:11According to Besant, Trump's administration inherited an affordability crisis.
01:15We have slowed the price increases down, and they are going to continue to slow down.
01:21Real working class wages will go up, and that that will address the affordability issue, he continued.
01:26Laughing at Besant's defense, Wallace called the president and his secretary wildly out of touch.
01:31Does anyone think Scott Besant has ever pumped gas? Wallace asked.
01:37A wildly out-of-touch Donald Trump and cabinet trying and failing to gaslight the American people
01:42on the cost of living when it comes to his failure,
