00:04During the 2024 campaign, President Donald Trump held a clear lead over Democratic rivals,

00:16Now, a new poll shows that while many voters like the idea of Trump steering the economy,

00:20most now say his policies have actually made it worse.

00:23A majority of Americans, 53%, believe Trump's policies have made economic conditions worse,

00:30while only 24% believe he's improved them, according to a new Pew Research survey.

00:36Just 26% of respondents to the Pew Research poll rated the current economy as excellent or good.

00:43Meanwhile, 74% described the economy as fair or poor.

00:47Among those holding a negative view, top reasons cited included inflation,

00:51tariffs, and the overall high cost of living.

00:55That marks a sharp contrast with the Pew data from November 2018,

00:59around the midpoint of Trump's first term,

01:02when 59% of Americans rated the economy as excellent or good,

01:06a drop of 33 percentage points.

01:09Yet even with Trump's poor ratings on the economy,

01:11most surveys continue to show that voters have more confidence by a few percentage points in Republicans

01:16than in Democrats when it comes to handling the economy.

01:19It's interesting considering that for more than a decade,

01:22economists and other social scientists have confirmed that data show

01:25there's a strong advantage in U.S. economic performance

01:29when Democratic administrations are in charge.

01:32Findings backed up in a 2024 report from the Economic Policy Institute.

01:38Economic performance is much stronger when Democrats hold the White House,
