00:01After calling for a boycott almost two years ago, Monique is now suing Netflix for
00:05racial and gender discrimination. The comedian is suing the streaming giant over the
00:10$500,000 offer she received to do a stand-up special for them, claiming Netflix
00:15discriminates against black women, paying them substantially less than white women
00:19and men. But Netflix is saying that's not the case. A spokesperson for the streaming
00:23giant sent a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday saying,
00:26Back in 2018, Monique posted a video alleging gender and color bias because her offer was
00:44significantly lower than the millions paid to the likes of Amy Schumer, Chris Rock and
00:48Dave Chappelle. At the time, Wanda Sykes responded on Twitter thanking her for speaking out
00:53and saying she walked away from a deal that was less than half of what Monique was offered.
00:58In a complaint filed Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Monique is suing for
01:02discrimination and unfair business practices and says Netflix is perpetuating the pay gap
01:07suffered by black women. She further claims that when she told the company its offer was
01:11discriminatory, it refused to negotiate fairly. In the suit, Monique goes on to list
01:16examples of what other comedians who aren't black women were reportedly paid by Netflix,
01:21including Jerry Seinfeld with $100 million, Eddie Murphy with $70 million,
01:26Dave Chappelle with $60 million, Chris Rock with $40 million, Ellen DeGeneres with $20 million,
01:32Jeff Dunham with $16.5 million and Ricky Gervais with $40 million.
01:37The complaint also includes headshots of seven top Netflix executives, all of whom are white,
01:43in support of her notion that the company's lack of racial diversity contributes to a culture
01:47of discrimination. For more updates to this story, head to THR.com. Until next time,
