The studio and streaming giant, already home to the series based on Margaret Atwood’s best-selling novel, are developing the author's follow-up for the screen.

00:00It's time to dive deeper into Margaret Atwood's dystopian world as the author's
00:04follow-up to The Handmaid's Tale is officially making its way to the small screen.
00:08MGM and Hulu announced Wednesday that they're developing the sequel to Atwood's
00:12best-selling 1985 dystopian novel titled The Testaments. The sequel, which the author
00:17started writing in 2016 and publishes September 10th, will pick up more than 15 years
00:22after the ambiguous ending of the original Handmaid's Tale novel. Instead of being
00:25told from the perspective of Offred, played by Elizabeth Moss in the show, The
00:29Testaments will be narrated by three other women connected to Gilead, a young woman
00:33raised in the oppressive society, a Canadian teen who learns she was actually born in
00:38Gilead, and a deeper look inside the mind of Aunt Lydia, the villain of both the novel
00:42and the series. The original series, which recently wrapped its third season, has stuck
00:46closely to the novel for its first season, but has since moved beyond the source
00:50material for its latter two seasons and has expanded the world of Atwood's novel.
00:54So since the sequel picks up a mere 15 years later, it goes without saying that the new
00:58series will inevitably impact the events of the current show. As part of a Time
01:02magazine cover story, Atwood hints about how it would all fall into play, saying
01:15Speaking with THR before the season three premiere, Handmaid's Tale showrunner Bruce
01:19Miller agreed that the sequel will directly impact his version of events, saying,
01:23I don't know how much she's going to follow our lead in The Testaments. Certainly we are
01:27living in Margaret's world. In the end, this show, my show, is built to be a companion
01:31piece to both of those books.
01:33The Handmaid's Tale has proven to be successful for Hulu, winning 11 Emmys for its first two
01:38seasons, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2017. The sequel move marks the third
01:43collaboration between Atwood and MGM Television. In addition to The Handmaid's Tale, the
01:47studio has acquired the rights to Atwood's 2015 novel, The Heart Goes Last, which follows a young
01:52couple hit by job loss and bankruptcy during a nationwide economic collapse. For more
