00:00It's about all the bits in between. It's about all the joy and all the, you know, the only access to the joy is through the awareness of things inevitably ending, whether it's 50 years, 80 years, or 50 weeks from now.

00:22The two star in A24's latest tear-jerk romance, We Live in Time. The heartfelt drama follows the relationship between Andrew Garfield's Tobias, a recently divorced salesman, and Florence Pugh's Almet, an up-and-coming chef, from their first surprising encounter through the course of a decade.
00:40As they navigate life and even welcome a child, they learn to cherish their time together when a late-stage cancer diagnosis rocks the happy home they've built.
00:48The film beautifully showcases life's highs and lows, as well as the gut-wrenching reality of grief.
00:54The two stars, alongside director John Crowley, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how they hope their new film helps find healing with those suffering from grief.
01:03I know that for us, making this film felt very personally healing.
01:08Hopefully it provides some solace. Hopefully it provides a container and a space for feelings to be felt and for hearts to be opened.
01:19Garfield, who lost his mother to pancreatic cancer in 2019, noted that taking on this project helped his own healing journey.
01:26But as he tells THR, grief is not just about the loss, but also all the bits in between.
01:32The film, John and Nick Paine, our writer, created something that covers a whole span of what that experience is.
01:43And it's also not just exclusively about loss. It's about all the bits in between.
01:50It's about all the joy and all the, you know, the only access to the joy is through the awareness of things inevitably ending,
01:58whether it's 50 years, 80 years, or 50 weeks from now.
02:02For Pugh, the film also resonated with playing a multifaceted woman,
02:06and she tasked herself with making sure Almet wasn't just defined by her suffering.
02:10She wants to be bigger than the thing that someone is, that this thing is making of her.
02:17She wants to be something more impressive than the downfall of something eating her alive.
02:23She wants to leave something that is far greater than the thing that is taking her, and I completely understand that.
02:32Was there a moment where you had felt like you were seen in maybe just one way,
02:36or put it in a box, whether in career or outside of that, and how did you navigate it?
02:41In any young female's career, I think you're always pushed into some sort of corner or direction,
02:48or having to be something, and that's why, that's probably why I've been so vocal and opinionated,
02:55is because I wanted to make sure that I am exactly the thing that I am representing.
03:00As for the chemistry between the two stars, fans have been itching to see the two together on screen
03:05ever since they made an appearance together at the 2023 Oscars.
03:09Garfield noted to THR,
03:10When John and I were talking about ideas for Almet because I came on first, Florence was top of the list.
03:16I'd been wanting to work with her for a long time, and it turned out she had also wanted to work with me.
03:21And with a script like this, we have to travel to the most intimate places,
03:25and it wouldn't be possible if we didn't feel safe.
03:27It was very, very easy to do that with Florence, and I think she would say the same with me.
03:32I'm so grateful for that, because I don't think we would have a film that works without that.
03:36I'm okay. It's okay, honestly.
03:42It's okay not to be okay. It's a lot.
03:45We Live in Time is out in theaters everywhere October 18th.
