The mayor took over for Kimmel Thursday night as he stepped into hosting shoes where he addressed coronavirus concerns and reflected on ending his presidential run.
Transcript
00:00My name is Pete Buttigieg and I am running to be the next host of Jimmy Kimmel Live.
00:05Former Democratic candidate for president Pete Buttigieg stepped in for host Jimmy Kimmel on ABC on Thursday night.
00:12But he did so without a live audience amid the coronavirus pandemic.
00:15Instead, a few Jimmy Kimmel Live staffers, some friends, and Pete's husband Chaston made up the sparse crowd.
00:21This was not our plan. We just decided this a few hours ago.
00:24And it's disappointing because, as you all know, I love to crowd surf. It's kind of my thing.
00:29Buttigieg went on to make several jokes about how he ended up hosting the show while Kimmel taped
00:33Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? But he assured the crowd,
00:36I know this is a time of great anxiety for our country. But believe me when I say that the resolve of our nation is strong.
00:43Our ideals run deep and America will always be America.
00:47In fact, here's some living proof of that from last night's Masked Singer.
00:51He then showed Sarah Palin being unmasked and performing Baby Got Back on Wednesday's episode of the Fox series.
00:57And this was his response.
00:59That's going to be me in three months, isn't it?
01:01Later in the night, Buttigieg, who happens to be a Star Trek superfan, welcomed guest Sir Patrick Stewart
01:07for a very serious game of Star Trek trivia. Who's the captain now?
01:10Worf didn't always wear a gold uniform. What color uniform did Worf wear in season number one?
01:16Red. Star Trek, red.
01:18Red is correct!
01:19No surprise, Stewart ended up winning, but it was a tight game.
01:25Buttigieg also interviewed Veep star Tony Hale, revealing to him that as far as shows that most
01:30closely resemble his life go, it had to be Veep.
01:32Sadly, the most realistic political show in many ways was Veep.
01:36And I wonder how many times you encountered people who work in politics and talk about how
01:39as absurd as it is, it also captured a lot of the reality of being involved in politics.

01:49Until next time, for The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Tiffany Taylor.
