Authorities have identified the suspect in the ambush shooting of two West Virginia National Guard soldiers near the White House as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal. Officials say the attack was targeted, leaving both Guardsmen critically wounded.

Intelligence sources tell U.S. media that Lakanwal previously worked with U.S. government partner forces in Afghanistan, including units linked to the CIA, before being evacuated to the U.S. under Operation Allies Welcome in 2021. The FBI is investigating the shooting as a potential act of international terrorism, while political leaders trade criticism over U.S. immigration and vetting policies.
