Macron announces new French voluntary military service to start next summer

France will launch a voluntary military service programme for 18 and 19-year-olds in 2026, aiming to enrol 3,000 participants initially and up to 50,000 by 2035, the French president announced on Thursday.

00:00France will launch a voluntary military service program in summer 2026,
00:07President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday.
00:10The scheme will recruit 18- and 19-year-olds selected during a day of mobilization,
00:16based on their motivation and the needs of the armed forces.
00:19Volunteers will serve for 10 months, beginning with one month of initial training
00:24in basic military skills and weapons handling,
00:27followed by nine months in a military unit deployed only on French territory.
00:32We cannot return to the time of the conscription,
00:36but we need a mobilization.
00:41A mobilization of the nation to defend ourselves,
00:46not against such or such enemy, but to be prepared and respected.
00:53Macron said the program aims to enroll 3,000 young people in 2026,
00:59rising to 10,000 by 2030 and 50,000 by 2035.
01:04France's military currently comprises around 200,000 active personnel
01:10and over 40,000 reservists,
01:12making it the second largest in the European Union, just behind Poland.
