00:00:49Marie, my angel editor, did you enjoy the meal?
00:00:52Oh, so delicious Chef Marcel.
00:00:54Thank you so much for the VIP treatment.
00:00:56Thank you for making my cookbook a bestseller.
00:00:59Look, we are featured on Epicurious.
00:01:01Amazing. Bravo.
00:01:03I will send over coffee and dessert.
00:01:05You will love it. Merry Christmas.
00:01:08Well, you certainly made his Christmas wish come true.
00:01:11One of the perks of being an editor for non-fiction.
00:01:14You get to eat at New York City's hottest pop-up. Cheers.
00:01:17Here I thought you were buttering me up so you could bail on my Christmas party.
00:01:21Once upon a time you were the Christmas queen.
00:01:26Do you remember that one year you made the doorman cry?
00:01:29I think he had allergies.
00:01:30You made him his late mother's Christmas strudel.
00:01:33He was full on bawling.
00:01:35My point is, you loved Christmas.
00:01:39And you made it magical for everyone.
00:01:41Uh, the last Christmas I tried to make magical, I foolishly assumed that the love of my life was proposing to me.
00:01:47And then he broke my heart, so I learned the hard way.
00:01:51Magic only exists in fairy tales, not in real life.
00:01:54Clark was four years ago.
00:01:56I think it's time you put a little Christmas magic back into your life.
00:02:00Are you conspiring with my mother?
00:02:02What?
00:02:03She's been texting me all day. Look at this.
00:02:06Every Christmas tree lot in the entire city.
00:02:09Well, maybe you should get a tree.
00:02:12It might restore your faith in Christmas.
00:02:14I had faith that non-fiction was temporary.
00:02:17A few months tops, and here I am two years later.
00:02:21With a successful Christmas cookbook, I have a hard time thinking that Henry will ever let me be in charge of fiction again.
00:02:27Fiction is your forte, and deep down Henry knows that too.
00:02:30You found the great J.P. Presley. It's your passion.
00:02:34Yeah, well my passion is running on empty.
00:02:36You have to chase a dream, right?
00:02:38Yeah, but now's your chance.
00:02:40Behind you.
00:02:41Andy and Marie, huh?
00:02:44Nice.
00:02:45Isn't this place fantastic?
00:02:46Cookbook is a success. Sales are soaring.
00:02:49Don't you just love Christmas?
00:02:50Oh, we do.
00:02:51In fact, Marie was just telling me about a great new idea she has.
00:02:56It's just a strategic idea for next quarter, but I can talk about it tomorrow.
00:03:02Okay, great. We'll have a meeting in the morning.
00:03:05Have a wonderful evening, ladies.
00:03:07Could you have been any more vague?
00:03:10I need time to prepare. And besides, I feel like I'm setting myself up for disappointment.
00:03:14Ask him by Christmas. That gives you two weeks to muster up the courage.
00:03:19And then you can buy a tree.
00:03:21Think of it like a giant air freshener.
00:03:24Peace on Earth aromatherapy.
00:03:27Here you are.
00:03:28It's a sign.
00:03:30And for you. Enjoy.
00:03:33Thanks.
00:03:41Henry, as you know, I have put my heart and soul into this company.
00:03:44And I love writing more than anything.
00:03:47And I want to be put back on fiction.
00:03:50I feel like that is my strong suit, and...
00:03:53Already getting gifts.
00:03:55Santa must like you.
00:03:57Oh. Santa's my mom.
00:03:59Cool.
00:04:01No, not literally. Like, she sent me presents.
00:04:04How long have you been standing here?
00:04:05Not long.
00:04:07I'm Nate.
00:04:09Marie.
00:04:10I've seen you around, so it's nice to finally put a name to the face.
00:04:13Nice to meet you.
00:04:15It's my first Christmas in New York.
00:04:18You from here?
00:04:19Uh, yeah. Albany.
00:04:21I mean, my parents still live there.
00:04:23I'm from Florida.
00:04:24I see my town decorates palm trees instead of pine trees.
00:04:26Well, there's practically a Christmas tree on every corner here.
00:04:29Welcome to New York.
00:04:36I was hoping for more blankets of snow than slush.
00:04:38I've always wanted a white Christmas.
00:04:40Every year I would ask Santa for snow, but the closest that I ever got was one of those...
00:04:43Snoopy snow cone makers.
00:04:46What about you? What do you want?
00:04:48What do I want?
00:04:49For Christmas.
00:04:51Honestly, if I could have my neighbor turn down that corny Christmas music, I would be really grateful.
00:04:57And do you know your neighbors?
00:04:59Not really. It's a big building.
00:05:01That's one thing I miss most of small towns.
00:05:03You know, I consider Sinatra to be classy and classic, not corny.
00:05:08You must have some pretty high standards.
00:05:10I'm sorry. I just, um, the walls are thin and I...
00:05:14Not a fan of Christmas music?
00:05:16I mean, it just all starts sounding the same.
00:05:18Maybe switch it up a little?
00:05:20With a song from this decade?
00:05:22Well, if you have any more special requests, you can just put them on my door.
00:05:25Okay.
00:05:29Hi, Sammy.
00:05:30Oh, I missed you, buddy.
00:05:32I owe you a treat.
00:05:39Come here.
00:05:40Good boy.
00:05:41Here you go.
00:05:47Seriously?
00:06:01Oh, hi, honey.
00:06:03Hi, Mom.
00:06:04Can you see me?
00:06:05I can. You can stop waving.
00:06:07Oh, good. Did you get the mail?
00:06:09I did, yeah. Thanks for the early Christmas gifts.
00:06:11Open it.
00:06:13Shouldn't I wait for Christmas?
00:06:14No, no, no. This is important.
00:06:16Okay. All right. I'm gonna put you down for a sec, all right?
00:06:18Okay, honey.
00:06:19All right.
00:06:22She's gonna open it now.
00:06:23Okay.
00:06:24She looks nice. I think she was out.
00:06:25Oh.
00:06:26Fingers crossed she was on a date.
00:06:28Not a date. Sorry to disappoint.
00:06:30Oh, uh, your father was just asking...
00:06:33What?
00:06:34I thought...
00:06:36Did you open it?
00:06:37This is why you wanted me to get a tree?
00:06:39To hang one ornament?
00:06:41Read the note.
00:06:43No.
00:06:49Okay.
00:06:55An angel from Christmas past, hang her high to receive the magic that she casts.
00:07:01That's Aurora. Remember? When you were young, you always made sure she was the first decoration on the tree. You swore she was the only one who could cast Christmas magic.
00:07:13Yeah, that's because I imagined that she was responsible for the Northern Lights.
00:07:17You were always so creative. Oh, come on, honey. Don't ruin the fun. Give her a chance. Do it because you love your mother.
00:07:26And father.
00:07:28Yeah, for us.
00:07:29Okay, fine. I'll put her up on the shelf.
00:07:32Okay, that's fine for now.
00:07:35Oh, honey, I've gotta go. It's a Wonderful Life is starting. I love you.
00:07:40All right, I love you.
00:07:41Bye-bye.
00:07:42Okay, bye.
00:07:43Bye.
00:07:44Bye.
00:07:48So what do you think?
00:07:51I mean, she'll never stop nagging us if we don't put her up somewhere.
00:07:56She is beautiful.
00:08:05Okay, Aurora. If you still have some magic left in you, how about convincing Henry for that transfer?
00:08:21Oh, and could you send me a sign that happy endings still exist, not just in fairy tales, but in real life, too?
00:08:30And if you could help me with that, that would be great.
00:08:33Come on. Let's go. Good night. Good night, night.
00:08:42So join our journey there.
00:08:57Oh, hey, Marie. I was just gonna drop this at your door. It says fragile. Not much room in the box. Merry Christmas.
00:09:03Thanks. I'll see you about that.
00:09:13These numbers are fantastic. We actually went up in hardback sales, which is a miracle in this e-book age.
00:09:32Thank you. I included a note area and page markers in the cookbook. Purists love it.
00:09:40Well, that's why you're our best.
00:09:42How are you, Owen?
00:09:43Henry, I've been thinking and, um, I went out of nonfiction.
00:09:51Come again?
00:09:52The last two years, I've worked really hard to relaunch the nonfiction department. The numbers show that I've succeeded.
00:09:59But finding great stories and developing brilliant authors, that is what my passion is.
00:10:04J.P. Presley's book is still in the top sellers and I championed him when everybody else passed.
00:10:11I need a challenge and that's not happening with books like better business with Bitcoin.
00:10:26Well, did you ask?
00:10:29He said yes.
00:10:30Under one condition. I'm the story editor for our next non-fictional book, not the department.
00:10:37I mean, he agrees I'm a valuable team player and he supports me, but I can't abandon nonfiction. Not yet. I've got to prove myself. Again.
00:10:46One book today, department tomorrow. What's important is that you're moving in the right direction.
00:10:51I'm so proud of you.
00:10:53Yeah, it's like, something pushed me.
00:10:55What?
00:11:00Nothing. Nothing. Uh, you're right. Let's go celebrate. Do you want to go grab lunch?
00:11:05Oh, I wish I could. We're partnering with St. Ambrose and their toy drive this winter.
00:11:10Uh, so I have to go take pictures of the pediatric ward for the press release.
00:11:13Christmas presents.
00:11:14I know. It's courtesy of my mother.
00:11:19It's definitely not a Christmas tree.
00:11:21What does Linda have in store for you to bring you back into the Christmas spirit?
00:11:26I don't know.
00:11:27It's definitely festive.
00:11:28Kind of weird.
00:11:29It's kinda weird.
00:11:33Remember when Santa didn't miss us despite your broken wrists?
00:11:36Thanks to a pinch of Christmas cheer, we happily celebrated another year.
00:11:42Hm.
00:11:43Remember when Santa didn't miss us despite your broken wrist?
00:11:52Thanks to a pinch of Christmas cheer, we happily celebrated another year.
00:11:59So when I was a little girl, my cousin and I were playing out in the snow on Christmas Eve,
00:12:04and I slipped and broke my wrist.
00:12:08And I spent the entire night in the ER, and we were so scared.
00:12:13That Santa would forget about us, and not come to our home because we weren't in our bed.
00:12:18The nurses may need this.
00:12:22Said if you sprinkled some Christmas cheer and hung the ornament on the tree,
00:12:26that Santa would remember to come back and deliver our gifts.
00:12:33That was a long time ago.
00:12:36It's like a prescription for Christmas magic.
00:12:39Yeah, something silly like that.
00:12:43Wait, this is a sign.
00:12:45Hear me out.
00:12:47I'm going to the hospital.
00:12:48You should come with.
00:12:50And sit in the ER?
00:12:53It's not enough talking about my Christmas past.
00:12:55You want me to relive it?
00:12:56No.
00:12:56Visit the pediatric ward with me.
00:12:58We're coordinating the toy drive.
00:13:00You've been in the kids' shoes before.
00:13:02Maybe your story will give them some hope that Santa Claus always remembers a Christmas wish.
00:13:11But when you put it like that...
00:13:14For the record, I'm only going for the kids.
00:13:20Proof that Santa always delivers.
00:13:22Dr. Eichel.
00:13:31Right this way, ladies.
00:13:34And feel free to take all the photos you need.
00:13:36Great.
00:13:36Thanks.
00:13:37Sure.
00:13:37Do you mind if I take a look inside?
00:13:50You're my guest.
00:13:59Hey.
00:14:00What are you reading?
00:14:02A Wrinkle in Time.
00:14:03Oh, that's one of my favorites.
00:14:05Mine, too.
00:14:06I've read it four times.
00:14:08Four?
00:14:09Wow, you really are a fan.
00:14:11I love to read.
00:14:12It helps me forget about things.
00:14:17I love to read, too.
00:14:19Hi, I'm Marie.
00:14:21Skylar, what's that on your hands?
00:14:25Oh.
00:14:27It's a little Christmas cheer from my ornament.
00:14:32See?
00:14:33You know Santa?
00:14:42Uh, yeah.
00:14:43Uh, sort of.
00:14:44If I told you my Christmas wish, could you make sure Santa gets it?
00:14:49I'd do it myself, but it's not easy getting around.
00:14:52When do you get to go home?
00:14:54Not sure.
00:14:55I tore my leg pretty bad in gymnastics.
00:15:00What do you want for Christmas?
00:15:02I wish I had more books.
00:15:05Done.
00:15:05I will deliver the message myself.
00:15:07Could you ask Santa if he could get me a race car?
00:15:10Uh, sure.
00:15:14Are there any other Christmas wishes?
00:15:17Oh.
00:15:19Hey, where'd you disappear to?
00:15:20I was just chatting with some kids.
00:15:23I have an idea.
00:15:25What if we made ornaments with the kids' pictures on them and wrote their Christmas wishes on the back?
00:15:29That's a great idea.
00:15:30Then we could hang them on the company's Christmas tree and the staff will know exactly what to donate.
00:15:34We can call it the giving tree.
00:15:37You have perfected the toy drive.
00:15:40What, did the kids spark a little Christmas magic in you?
00:15:44I just don't want them to miss out because they're in the hospital.
00:15:46That's all.
00:15:47And besides, we are conducting a toy drive.
00:15:49We might as well give them exactly what they want, right?
00:15:51Right.
00:15:52Listen, I need to take some more pictures.
00:15:54Can you keep writing down wishes for Santa?
00:15:56Yeah.
00:15:57Though you might need a notepad.
00:15:59Yeah.
00:16:05Excuse me?
00:16:08Well, hello, neighbor.
00:16:10Hi.
00:16:11Sorry, but I have no control over the music here.
00:16:14I deserve that.
00:16:16And what are you doing at our hospital?
00:16:17Will you just come here to yell bah humbug?
00:16:19Good one.
00:16:20No, actually, I came here to bring gifts.
00:16:23I work at Lion's Run Publishing.
00:16:26So you're coordinating the toy drive.
00:16:29Oh, wow.
00:16:30I can hardly notice the shock in your eyes.
00:16:32I'm actually making a list for Santa.
00:16:34A list that's a little too long for this piece of paper.
00:16:36Allow me.
00:16:38Here.
00:16:39Perfect, thanks.
00:16:41I noticed that the bookshelves in the rec room are a little sparse.
00:16:45Yeah, I've put in some requests for more books, but they just don't seem to have it in the budget.
00:16:48Got all the pictures for the ornaments.
00:16:51Oh, mind interrupting?
00:16:52Oh, no.
00:16:53I was just chatting with my neighbor, Nate.
00:16:54He lives down the hall.
00:16:55Oh, hi.
00:16:56Hey, Mandy.
00:16:57Hey.
00:16:58Did you just move in?
00:16:59No, I moved here six months ago.
00:17:00Came here for work.
00:17:01Oh.
00:17:01Wait, six months ago?
00:17:02How have we never met?
00:17:04Yeah, you should probably look up from your phone every now and then.
00:17:06So, you're making ornaments?
00:17:11Each ornament will have a picture on the front and a wish list on the back.
00:17:15Race idea.
00:17:16Show me your ornament.
00:17:18Mom.
00:17:18Oh.
00:17:21This is cute.
00:17:26Her mom is sending her ornaments from Christmas past to get her back into the holiday spirit
00:17:31and hopefully get a tree.
00:17:33Wait, you don't have a tree?
00:17:34No.
00:17:34Not yet.
00:17:35Nope.
00:17:35It's Christmas.
00:17:36How can you not have a tree?
00:17:36See?
00:17:37He gets it.
00:17:38Okay, you know that complex across our street?
00:17:40They just put up a massive tree and the lights glare through my window, so I see Christmas
00:17:43every time I look up.
00:17:44I'm good.
00:17:45Point made.
00:17:46Mm-hmm.
00:17:46Not a fan of the holiday?
00:17:47Someone must have really rained on your Christmas parade, huh?
00:17:49That's me, so I should get going.
00:17:56Bye.
00:18:00Come on, don't hold it against him.
00:18:02He didn't know.
00:18:04He seems really sweet.
00:18:05You should get to know him better.
00:18:06No, I can't date a neighbor.
00:18:09Besides, if it didn't work out, how awkward would it be around the mailbox?
00:18:12Or even worse, the elevator.
00:18:14I would have to move.
00:18:15Love is worth the risk.
00:18:17Not when you're in rent control.
00:18:19Besides, he's a bit too idealistic for me.
00:18:23Exactly.
00:18:25No.
00:18:27Okay.
00:18:40Hey.
00:18:41I was going to leave you known.
00:18:43I'm really sorry if I offended you earlier.
00:18:46You bought me a tree?
00:18:50Peace offering.
00:18:51And I read in a medical journal that ornaments filled with Christmas cheer need pine branches
00:18:55to work.
00:18:57Well, a wreath would have been a lot more practical.
00:18:59Yeah, but there's no fun in practical.
00:19:00So, I suppose I have to keep this?
00:19:06Yes, ma'am.
00:19:08Okay.
00:19:09Well, my mother's going to be thrilled.
00:19:11Good.
00:19:12But I hope it brings you a little Christmas magic as well.
00:19:16Well, thank you.
00:19:18Good night.
00:19:18No, I'm good.
00:19:19Got it.
00:19:21Good night.
00:19:22Good night.
00:19:23Good night.
00:19:37Watch out.
00:19:44Wait.
00:19:45Sammy, Sammy, no.
00:19:47Nope, that's not for you.
00:19:57Okay.
00:19:58Fine.
00:20:11Oh, my mom will kill me if I break this.
00:20:14There we go.
00:20:22There we go.
00:20:26Don't worry.
00:20:26It's not going to be like the monstrosity across the street.
00:20:33It's late.
00:20:40It's fine.
00:20:41It's only going to be for a few weeks.
00:20:44It's fine.
00:20:45It's fine.
00:20:46It's fine.
00:20:46It's fine.
00:20:58Another package.
00:21:00Thanks.
00:21:05Dad would read poems by the fire, and hope and dreams he would inspire.
00:21:10Remember your favorite quote by Emily, and always dwell in possibility.
00:21:16Oh, so sweet.
00:21:18My dad gave me that ornament when I was in college.
00:21:21Oh.
00:21:22Emily Dickinson's still my favorite.
00:21:25Mom's really going for it, huh?
00:21:27I have to admit she's really tugging at those heartstrings.
00:21:30Getting a little emotional here.
00:21:31I apologize if I'm interrupting, but I was in the neighborhood.
00:21:35Are you kidding?
00:21:36Come in.
00:21:38Oh.
00:21:40So nice to see you, JP.
00:21:43I'll leave so you two can catch up.
00:21:45No, I didn't mean to run you off.
00:21:46Oh, no, no.
00:21:47I have office manager duties planning the Lions Run Christmas party.
00:21:50Oh, good.
00:21:51I am coming this year.
00:21:52Amazing.
00:21:53It's fantastic.
00:21:55We'll see you there.
00:21:56Okay.
00:21:57Bye.
00:21:59Sit.
00:21:59Come in.
00:22:01So, are you in the city for Christmas?
00:22:03Ah, yes, yes.
00:22:05L.A. feels like summer, and I prefer snow at Christmas.
00:22:09Nobody celebrates like New York.
00:22:10My wife loves the shopping.
00:22:13Okay, here's some news.
00:22:15I'm officially moving back to fiction.
00:22:18I mean, it's still in the process.
00:22:20It's one book at a time, but...
00:22:22That is wonderful.
00:22:24So, for my next book, you'll be my editor?
00:22:27Well, you have to finish it first.
00:22:29Well, what can I say?
00:22:30The TV show keeps me busy.
00:22:33Well, you can't forget your literary roots.
00:22:35Never.
00:22:36Never.
00:22:37But I have been thinking, you know, about different ideas, new directions.
00:22:46Anything you want to share?
00:22:49Maybe later.
00:22:50Oh.
00:22:51I see.
00:22:54So, you haven't given up on Christmas?
00:22:57It's my mother's attempt at pulling me back in.
00:23:00She keeps sending me these ornaments.
00:23:02It's like a journey down memory lane.
00:23:04That's good.
00:23:05Memories build the bridge between our minds and heart, and they should be preserved like
00:23:10treasured keepsakes.
00:23:11That's good.
00:23:13You need to remember that for your next book.
00:23:17You love Christmas.
00:23:19Marie, why do you keep turning your back on it?
00:23:24I mean, you know why.
00:23:26The NYU fellow, the one whose podcast you forbid me to go on.
00:23:31Unfortunately, Christmas spirit can't heal a broken heart.
00:23:33And besides, I find it so much easier to not get caught up in the Christmas drama.
00:23:41I just can't get past how he made me feel.
00:23:44You must let go.
00:23:47Use that energy for something positive.
00:23:49I don't think that's possible.
00:23:54The possible slow fuse is lit by the imagination.
00:24:01Emily Dickinson.
00:24:08I mean, it looks kind of weird without the lights, but baby steps, right?
00:24:16Hi, honey.
00:24:33Hi, Mom.
00:24:34Did you get the packages?
00:24:35I did, yeah.
00:24:37You really don't have to keep sending these things.
00:24:40So when are you going to get a tree?
00:24:42Oh, oh, you already did.
00:24:45Alex, come and see the tree.
00:24:48I can't see anything.
00:24:49Okay, hold on.
00:24:53Can you see it?
00:24:54Oh, why is it so bare?
00:24:57Because I have, like, three ornaments.
00:24:59Well, didn't you get the box?
00:25:01What box?
00:25:02Alex, where did you send the box?
00:25:05To her apartment.
00:25:06Honey, obviously it's not there.
00:25:09You had one job.
00:25:11I mean, I wrote the address in perfect pen.
00:25:13Okay, I gotta go.
00:25:14Mom, why don't you call me?
00:25:14Actually, no, you know what?
00:25:15Text me when you find it, okay?
00:25:17All right.
00:25:18Okay, love you.
00:25:18Bye.
00:25:21Delivery man got the wrong apartment.
00:25:23I hope you don't mind, but I signed for it.
00:25:24I figured it would just be easier if I brought it over myself.
00:25:26You just saved my father an earful from my mom.
00:25:29Always happy to be the hero.
00:25:31I suspect that that is more ornaments.
00:25:33Hero and detective.
00:25:34You're just a jack of all trades.
00:25:36Yeah, you know, you're gonna have to be in my line of work.
00:25:41That's the, uh, tree.
00:25:43That's good.
00:25:45Do you want to come in and see?
00:25:47Sure.
00:25:53Who's this little buddy?
00:25:55That's Sam.
00:25:56I call him Sammy.
00:25:58My dog growing up, his name was Sam.
00:26:00Really?
00:26:01Yeah, all the best friends are.
00:26:03Just ask Frodo Baggins.
00:26:04You read fantasy novels?
00:26:06I'm not so much of a big reader, but I love movies and shows.
00:26:09You know, put on a Lord of the Rings marathon, big tub of popcorn.
00:26:12I'm all in.
00:26:14Did I interrupt your decorating?
00:26:17Uh, no.
00:26:19I'm actually done.
00:26:22All right, well, maybe this will add something.
00:26:25All right, let's see what we have in here.
00:26:30A Christmas Carol was your first favorite book.
00:26:45You loved it so much, you read it in June.
00:26:48That is my favorite book, too.
00:26:50I thought you just said you weren't much of a reader.
00:26:52No, but my grandfather would read us A Christmas Carol every year.
00:26:55I loved it.
00:26:57Tiny Tin was my favorite.
00:26:59He actually inspired me to pursue medicine, to help people.
00:27:05Listen, I've got extra lights and garland at my place.
00:27:09If you want, I can help you decorate.
00:27:10Right now?
00:27:11Yeah, sure.
00:27:12Why not?
00:27:13Believe me, decorating solo is not as much fun as it seems.
00:27:17Come on.
00:27:20Okay.
00:27:20Ha.
00:27:25Oh, Christmas tree, oh, Christmas tree, oh, Christmas tree, that leaves us so unchanging.
00:27:44Not only green when summer's here, but also when it is cold and dry.
00:27:51Oh, Christmas tree, oh, Christmas tree, that leaves us so unchanging.
00:28:00Yeah!
00:28:01Oh, we almost forgot.
00:28:04Oh.
00:28:09There.
00:28:11Oh.
00:28:12Well, you should hang Tiny Tim, because he's your favorite.
00:28:21You want to know a secret?
00:28:23Sure.
00:28:24Okay, at the end of A Christmas Carol, my grandfather would always let me say Tiny Tim's famous line.
00:28:30Even if my cousins begged, he'd always give it to me.
00:28:33It's my favorite Christmas memory.
00:28:35Well, go on, say it.
00:28:38Uh, now?
00:28:41Yeah.
00:28:42Uh, no, no, no, sorry, my performing days, they're, they're fast.
00:28:47Come on!
00:28:48No.
00:28:49What about you?
00:28:50Any Christmas secrets?
00:28:53No.
00:28:55Uh, that tree.
00:28:57I'm still not sure how I feel about it.
00:28:59Have you always been a self-proclaimed Scrooge?
00:29:01No, I used to really get into the holiday.
00:29:03Okay, so what happened?
00:29:06I don't know.
00:29:07I guess I've lost my Christmas spirit.
00:29:11Bad breakup.
00:29:14We've all been there.
00:29:16Maybe not at Christmas, but, you know, you move on.
00:29:19Can't let us spoil the entire season.
00:29:21Coming from the man who obviously has never had his heart broken.
00:29:24Yeah, I have.
00:29:26My last serious girl from back in Florida, actually.
00:29:29I don't blame her, though.
00:29:30I dove into my career, and I didn't really leave time for anything else.
00:29:34Who wants an absentee boyfriend?
00:29:35Is that why you moved to New York?
00:29:38Partially.
00:29:38St. Ambrose leads the nation in pediatrics, so I jumped at the opportunity.
00:29:42So your career went again.
00:29:45No.
00:29:46No, because I promised myself that if I made the move, I would make my life more balanced.
00:29:52Try new things, have more fun.
00:29:55Say yes to something other than a double shift.
00:29:57Yeah? Well, how's that going for you?
00:30:01I'm still working out the details.
00:30:05Breakups aren't easy.
00:30:08They hurt.
00:30:10But you can't use pain as a shield for your entire life, because then you end up blocking everything that's good.
00:30:14I should probably get going.
00:30:24Right.
00:30:31Tonight was fun.
00:30:33Yeah, it was.
00:30:35Thank you for the decorations.
00:30:37Yeah.
00:30:38Can I treat you to coffee?
00:30:43Or maybe some new music?
00:30:48How about ice skating?
00:30:50I haven't been since I was a kid.
00:30:51There's a rink two blocks from here.
00:30:55Would you want to?
00:30:58Full warning, there might be Christmas music there.
00:31:00Well, that's normally a deal breaker.
00:31:04But I think I can make an exception.
00:31:07I will knock at around six.
00:31:09Okay.
00:31:15Hey, what are you doing?
00:31:18Stop.
00:31:19What are you doing?
00:31:19What are you doing?
00:31:22What are you doing?
00:31:23Your father took me for pancakes on our first date.
00:31:40First kissed me on ice skates and proposed to me at the lighthouse.
00:31:45Love can find you anywhere.
00:31:46Love can find you anywhere.
00:31:53It's not a date, date.
00:32:16We're just going to ice skating.
00:32:17Oh, hey, Marie, another package.
00:32:27Thanks.
00:32:29Oh, and, um, Merry Christmas.
00:32:31Right back at you.
00:32:35Merry Christmas.
00:32:47From our summer vacations in the sun and sand, you'd look for buried treasure in the land.
00:32:56But the greatest treasure is always carried in your heart.
00:33:11Well, if this is really Christmas magic, do you think we'll find a buried treasure?
00:33:14I hope so.
00:33:28Ah, these are perfect.
00:33:30Can't get all the ornaments up because people keep trying to sneak peeks.
00:33:34I think there's something happening with those ornaments.
00:33:36Like what?
00:33:38Like something magical.
00:33:39Well, it's Christmas.
00:33:40It makes everyone feel magical.
00:33:41No, this is different.
00:33:42First, the pill container and the hospital.
00:33:45Then yesterday, JP quoted Emily Dickinson.
00:33:47And this last one, I get an ice skate ornament.
00:33:50And last night, Nate asked me to go ice skating.
00:33:53What, are you going to go?
00:33:54Well, I mean, it would be rude if I didn't.
00:33:56He got me a tree.
00:33:58It's not a date.
00:33:59It's neighbors hanging out in the neighborhood.
00:34:02Okay, my point is...
00:34:04Is this just one big coincidence?
00:34:07No, it's serendipity.
00:34:08It's fate.
00:34:09Embrace it.
00:34:10Did you get an ornament today?
00:34:15I got a treasure chest.
00:34:16I doubt I'm going to find buried treasure underneath the tree.
00:34:18Oh, keep an open mind.
00:34:19Anything is possible.
00:34:20It's true.
00:34:21Bye.
00:34:21Hmm.
00:34:51hello Marie hi how are you hi I'm well excellent actually because I'm holding the Christmas
00:35:03treasure adventure in my hands right now do you like it I I told you I had some new ideas I love
00:35:09it it's it's such a sweet story and so serendipitous well it is my Christmas present to you
00:35:18now I I know it's a totally different genre but I trust that you will know what to do with it
00:35:24thank you I promise you I won't let you down you never do talk to you soon bye
00:35:43okay bye hey I was just about to call you
00:35:47good news this is JP Presley's next bestseller what better way for me to step back into the
00:35:54fiction world right yeah well I appreciate that JP brought us his latest passion project but we've
00:35:59moved away from children's publishing oh do you think we can make an exception I promise you I'm
00:36:04willing to put in the work yeah it's not about the work the numbers just don't add up for us
00:36:08don't worry I've got your fiction author he's an English professor at NYU this is his first novel
00:36:14but he has published quite a few short stories so it's not a novice but he has a wildly popular
00:36:19podcast that my daughter and her friends absolutely love oh so he already has a built-in audience oh
00:36:26yeah yeah he has celebrity status hence the the bidding war what's his name well there he is right now
00:36:31come on I'll introduce you Clark Haussman Henry
00:36:36oh right good hello
00:36:40so you think a massive structure like Machu Picchu would stand out
00:36:49our tour guide takes a wrong turn and suddenly we're totally lost in the Andes
00:36:54no yeah I'm starting to see spiders the size of cats and I'm thinking I don't want to go out like
00:36:59this so I pull on my compass for my boy scout days and within 10 minutes we're right in front of the
00:37:05city gates our tour guide was so happy he offered me his best llama too bad I couldn't get through
00:37:10security
00:37:11well that was a really great story did your trip give you any inspiration for your novel
00:37:22uh no no but um maybe for the next one huh
00:37:27Clark's promised that his uh his novels inspired by his personal endeavors similar to his podcast
00:37:33well as much as I've enjoyed your adventures and your little zip lining videos I'm really curious about
00:37:40your book like what's it about love love do you care to elaborate um I thought this was a meet and
00:37:58greet I didn't really prepare a pitch or anything oh that's okay no worries no worries I mean you're
00:38:02obviously a gifted storyteller so Marie will set up a follow-up meeting only if you bring pages
00:38:08and by that I mean chapters not transcripts of your podcast this is what I love about Marie her tenacity
00:38:14a go-getter I like to be pushed well I've envisioned pushing you in many ways Clark probably off a cliff
00:38:20am I right uh-huh um you two met college sweethearts and then some and obviously not anymore
00:38:34is this going to uh complicate the novel no no that was four years ago before I came to lion's run
00:38:44the past is the past
00:38:46see you soon
00:38:52Henry great seeing you see you in a couple weeks absolutely okay bye
00:38:56did I just see Clark yeah apparently my road back to fiction is on the houseman express wait so how does he
00:39:05just sneak back into your life I feel like there should have been a sign or something there were I did
00:39:10this oh the ornaments I told you there's magic to them today I got a treasure chest huh JP sends
00:39:19me his book it's called a Christmas treasure adventure so how does Clark just magically appear
00:39:24in your life my mom sent me this lighthouse ornament my father proposed to her at one in Maine it's
00:39:29always been our family's favorite vacation spot and and and it was always this symbol of love
00:39:38Clark and I spent our last Christmas there together I was insistent he was hesitant and sorry broke
00:39:50your heart oh I knew it I shouldn't have hung it on the tree okay let's look at the signs so you got
00:39:57the lighthouse and the ice skate ornaments at the same time right and the pancakes do you have a
00:40:02connection to pancakes I mean it was my parents first date the lighthouse is a sign that true
00:40:07love exists and the ice skates are gliding in Nate as your true love okay let's not get too far ahead
00:40:12of ourselves okay stay focused on the positive it can mean something else and maybe it's a metaphor
00:40:18to light your way or maybe it's a foghorn trying to warn me the lighthouse it's it's special to your
00:40:26family right since it's a special memory let's try and assume that it's guiding you in the right
00:40:32direction we did have amazing family vacations there see that's all that matters
00:40:40all right let's just take this slow it's been a long time since I've done this you're gonna be fine it's just like riding a bike
00:41:04you're good yeah yeah no I just need to channel my 112 year old I got this you just gotta stay centered
00:41:14I got this good oh no no no no no no no I forgot how to turn oh my god no you okay yep it's okay not a lot of people saw
00:41:28that okay okay my hero hardly I just saved you from so much embarrassment yeah well that's okay okay
00:41:39just hold my hand we can take it slow here just right left right you're doing so good you're doing so much
00:41:48much better okay what do you give that uh a six six I mean your pivot could be a little tighter
00:42:09okay okay but if I get a seven on this one we go out to dinner well if you get an eight I'll let you
00:42:16choose the restaurant okay what do you give that where do you want to eat all right
00:42:28so what do you think it's very classic
00:42:37so what's good cheeseburgers but I'm a breakfast for dinner kind of guy so I'll be having Santa's
00:42:46flapjacks with eggnog syrup pancakes too much Christmas for you I love Santa's flapjacks please
00:42:55Marie uh what the heck I'll have the same hey
00:42:59so why nursing well I planned on being a doctor and I passed my MCATs and I was ready for med school
00:43:08and then my grandfather got sick cancer I'm sorry it was a battle I stayed with him every day through
00:43:18his treatment and as much as I appreciate everything that the doctors did it was really the nurses that
00:43:24gave him us the strength to keep on fighting you know they held his hand through everything and they
00:43:33cheered for him when he rang the bell for his last chemo treatment they made sure that we never felt
00:43:40alone I'm sure he's alive today because of it you know you can't write a prescription for that kind of
00:43:47support no you can't then I went to thank the head nurse she told me that's the way it works right
00:43:56there I found my calling never looked back wow I wish I had that kind of courage what do you mean
00:44:01you're living your dream oh I voluntarily have been in this non-fiction purgatory for the last two years
00:44:08I hardly call it a dream come true why I got stuck I didn't want to disappoint my boss he praised my
00:44:18success he promoted me I thought that would be enough but it isn't and I feel guilty for that
00:44:29you should never feel guilty about being unhappy just think of it as a road sign that's telling you
00:44:35you need to go a different direction well I'm in that process we just hired a new fiction writer
00:44:41and I'm the story editor that's great yeah it is a step in the right direction do you like him
00:44:47he's not my first choice but my boss really likes him and wants the novel to be a huge success
00:44:54what do you want the same sounds like maybe your heart wants something different my heart enjoys
00:45:03success yeah of course but I mean what's your big dream the one that comes from your heart
00:45:08honestly I would love to open up my own boutique publishing house and discover inspiring writers
00:45:21find diamonds in the rough and develop incredible great stories that connect through the imagination
00:45:30okay that's it you promise me that you'll go after that dream your own publishing house
00:45:36people would think I was crazy doesn't matter what people think it matters what we do
00:45:39that's what the world remembers
00:45:41okay I promise
00:45:47thank you
00:45:51all right
00:45:54is everything okay
00:46:02yeah I'm just getting updates from Leslie at the hospital

01:10:28I just
01:10:31I think

01:10:34before we break our hearts
01:10:35so you're just gonna give up
01:10:39it'll be for the best
01:10:50it'll be for the best
01:10:51it'll be for the best
01:11:20I called you.
01:11:45I know.
01:11:46I watched it rain.
01:11:47You knew I'd drive down here.
01:11:50I guess I could use some real FaceTime.
01:11:53Oh, come on, honey.
01:11:56Tell me your troubles.
01:12:03So that's the story.
01:12:05So, you sabotaged your career,
01:12:09then your new relationship with your handsome neighbor,
01:12:11and then you come home and dismantle the tree.
01:12:16You know I believe that those ornaments are magical?
01:12:19Like, every time I hung one on the tree,
01:12:21something wonderful would pop into my life,
01:12:24reminding me that happy endings do exist.
01:12:27Honey, there is always magic in Christmas.
01:12:31Your father gave this to me when we first got married.
01:12:39Oh, my God.
01:12:48It's beautiful, right?
01:12:50A simple open heart.
01:12:52Or hollow.
01:12:53It could be hollow.
01:12:54Now, that's the beauty of life.
01:12:57It changes based on our perspective.
01:12:59You walk around and think of it as a hollow heart,
01:13:02and life's going to keep passing you by.
01:13:05But if you'll allow it to be an open heart,
01:13:10you'll be surprised not just by how much love comes in,
01:13:15but by how much you give back.
01:13:19That's what dreams are made of.
01:13:22Like magic.
01:13:24Magic doesn't exist.
01:13:26It does if you believe it does.
01:13:28It does.
01:13:58Good morning.
01:14:08Good morning.
01:14:15That was quite the scene the other night.
01:14:18I'm sorry.
01:14:20Clark and I have our differences,
01:14:22but I should have never confronted him at the Christmas party.
01:14:29I think it's best to take you off the book.
01:14:36But Clark won't have it.
01:14:38Says that you're the best story editor he's ever worked with,
01:14:41that you have a passion for the craft,
01:14:43an ability to encourage writers,
01:14:45and I agree.
01:14:49We have three days until Christmas,
01:14:51so I expect you to work out your issues with Clark
01:14:55and get back in the ballgame.
01:14:59I appreciate his kind words,
01:15:04but I want to relaunch the children's department
01:15:06with J.P.'s book.
01:15:07It is something so special.
01:15:08Children's books are off the table.
01:15:11Okay? Check the numbers.
01:15:12They're not a good investment for us right now.
01:15:13Well, we don't even have to do a full collection.
01:15:15We could just start with J.P.'s.
01:15:16He's already signed with us.
01:15:17You want to run the fiction department, yes or no?
01:15:20Yes.
01:15:21Then focus on Clark's book.
01:15:24If J.P. ever finishes his adult novel,
01:15:26then you can go and work on that.
01:15:28Marie, are we okay?
01:15:29No.
01:15:30I'm resigning.
01:15:34Consider this my two weeks' notice.
01:15:35Marie.
01:15:36Thank you so much for everything.
01:15:37I've learned a lot.
01:15:38Oh, come on.
01:15:39It's time for me to go follow my heart.
01:15:40I will-
01:15:41No.
01:15:42Marie, are we okay?
01:15:43Marie, are we okay?
01:15:48No.
01:15:50I'm resigning.
01:15:51Oh.
01:15:53Consider this my two weeks' notice.
01:15:54Marie.
01:15:56Thank you so much for everything.
01:15:59I've learned a lot.
01:16:00Oh, come on.
01:16:01It's time for me to go follow my heart.
01:16:05Don't follow my heart.
01:16:10Okay.
01:16:24Clark!
01:16:25Marie, I've been trying you all weekend.
01:16:27How about the party? Don't worry.
01:16:29I spoke to Henry.
01:16:31And?
01:16:32And I resigned.
01:16:35It's all my fault.
01:16:37No, it was actually my decision.
01:16:39I'm so sorry for everything.
01:16:43Ruining Christmas. Again.
01:16:46Nobody can ruin my Christmas.
01:16:49Dare I ask for any last minute notes?
01:16:53Yeah.
01:16:55The woman in your book, she doesn't need saving.
01:16:58She saves herself, and it's a much happier ending.
01:17:03Merry Christmas, Clark.
01:17:08So what are you gonna do now?
01:17:10It's Christmas.
01:17:11Gonna go spread some Christmas magic.
01:17:16We'll need room for presents.
01:17:18And so this is the room we use for meetings.
01:17:23Is it available?
01:17:25Yes.
01:17:26Nothing's on the schedule until January.
01:17:29It's perfect.
01:17:30Perfect.
01:17:31How much they saw, how many homes they visited, but always with a happy end.
01:17:41The spirits stood beside sick beds, and they were cheerful, on foreign lands, and they were close at home by struggling men.
01:17:47And they were patient in their greater hope, by poverty, and it was rich.
01:17:52In alms house, hospital, and jail, in misery's every refuge, where vain man and his little brief authority had not made fast the door, and borrowed the spirit out.
01:18:02He left his blessing.
01:18:12Joy to the world, the Lord has come.
01:18:19Let earth receive her King.
01:18:24Hey.
01:18:26Hey.
01:18:30I was just admiring the beautiful Christmas tree across the street.
01:18:34Yeah, it really is beautiful.
01:18:38So are you going to work?
01:18:40No, just doing some last minute Christmas shopping for my family.
01:18:44Tomorrow's Christmas Eve, are you just gonna overnight it?
01:18:46No, I booked a 9am flight for tomorrow morning.
01:18:54What about your white Christmas?
01:18:57Maybe next year.
01:19:00I don't know, I guess I'm gonna be trading snow for white sandy beaches.
01:19:05It'll still be festive though, my family.
01:19:07They throw a big dinner party at the restaurant, local lighthouse, shines red and green, it's kinda like that tree.
01:19:14Did you just say lighthouse?
01:19:17Yeah, grew up on Sanibel Island.
01:19:19Lighthouses are pride and joy.
01:19:21My parents even named the restaurant after it.
01:19:24Oh.
01:19:27My ride's here.
01:19:31Merry Christmas, Marie.
01:19:35Merry, Merry Christmas.
01:19:46Merry Christmas.
01:20:05Merry Christmas.
01:20:12I've got to ask, how are you doing?
01:20:14Geez?
01:20:15Dear Nate,
01:20:34Broken hearts are often lost hearts.
01:20:38It takes a special light to guide them back against the fear that was trying to sink them.
01:20:45The End
01:20:50The End
01:20:52The End
01:20:54The End
01:20:59The End
01:21:04Oh, hey, Marie.
01:21:27You looking for your meal?
01:21:28Uh, no, I'm looking for Nate Thomas.
01:21:29Have you seen him?
01:21:30He left a few minutes ago, spending Christmas in Florida.
01:21:32Lucky guy.
01:21:34Noelle and the angels, they say, what's a certain portion of your hands?
01:21:52Emily, I am sorry if I'm late.
01:21:54Oh, no, it's fine.
01:21:55My dad, aka Santa, is around the corner, just about to make his entrance with the kids.
01:21:59Hey.
01:21:59Hey, did you invite Nate?
01:22:08Yeah, he's going to Florida.
01:22:11Oh, is that where he's from?
01:22:14Yeah, Santa Belle Island.
01:22:16His family owns a restaurant called The Lighthouse.
01:22:22Nate is The Lighthouse?
01:22:24No, it's too late.
01:22:25Hey, don't worry about it.
01:22:30It's Christmas time.
01:22:30Nothing bad can happen.
01:22:37Ready?
01:22:38Yeah.
01:22:41Come on in, kids.
01:22:45Merry Christmas.
01:22:46Merry Christmas.
01:22:47Go open your gifts.
01:22:51Welcome to your own Christmas wonderland.
01:22:53Oh, I'm so sorry.
01:22:55Did Santa bring all this?
01:22:58Why don't you go ask him?
01:22:59Ho, ho, ho!
01:23:02Merry Christmas!
01:23:05No way!
01:23:06It's Santa!
01:23:07Merry Christmas!
01:23:09The children tuck into their beds, and before falling asleep, the boy asked one more question.
01:23:16Promise we do it again next year?
01:23:18The majestic star twirled and gently whispered, I promise.
01:23:27Where can we get that book?
01:23:30Hopefully from me.
01:23:31I'm opening my own publishing company, and with J.P.'s permission, I'd like The Christmas
01:23:38Treasure Adventure to be my very first book.
01:23:44Yes.
01:23:46Yes, but only if all these adorable little faces get their own copy.
01:23:50Absolutely.
01:23:51Absolutely.
01:23:51When did you come up with this wonderful idea, and what took you so long?
01:24:01Well, someone once reminded me that the possible slow fuse is lit by the imagination.
01:24:16I thought you were going to Florida.
01:24:18I was.
01:24:22And then I got this.
01:24:26I'm so sorry for the way I acted.
01:24:28I was completely in the wrong.
01:24:31I really hope you can forgive me.
01:24:36Somewhere between Christmas past and present, I realized what I want for my future.
01:24:45That's for you.
01:24:48Tiny Tim always lived in hope, not fear, and I now know how important that is.
01:24:54My heart is open because of you.
01:25:01After our class, our fight, I almost lost hope in you.
01:25:07In us.
01:25:12Almost.
01:25:13You know, the first time you met, you asked me what I wanted for Christmas.
01:25:20And I know the answer.
01:25:23It's you.
01:25:25Well, that's the greatest present anyone can ever give me.
01:25:27So does this mean you're going to spend Christmas with me?
01:25:39Yeah, I would love to.
01:25:42What are you thinking about?
01:25:44Just that happy endings really do exist.
01:25:46Well, I thought you were.
