Ben, Edna, and their baby daughter are headed to California when their car breaks down and Ben ventures off to the junkyard in search of a spare part to fix it. Coincidentally, the police have just accused seedy junkyard owner Harry of selling stolen auto parts, and Harry claims he gets his cars from someone else. Ben wanders into the junkyard just in time for Harry to frame him and use him as a scapegoat. When Ben doesn't return after a long time, Edna goes looking for him and is chased around the junkyard by Harry's odd, dimwitted friend Blowhard.

00:00:11Tonight from 1963, it's Emmy winner Rue McClanahan
00:00:16like you've never seen her before.
00:00:18In John Hayes' directorial debut,
00:00:21the future golden girl plays a junkyard floozy
00:00:25with a mysterious past.
00:00:27This trashcan treasure co-stars Rue's former husband
00:00:31Norman Hartwig and my favorite beatnik King Moody.

00:06:59Can you fix it?
00:07:19I said, can you fix it?
00:07:23I don't see why we have to go along like tramps or something,
00:07:26sleeping in the car, not eating in restaurants, not staying in a motel.
00:07:30I get so sick of it.
00:07:33What's wrong with us?
00:07:34I don't know.
00:07:37Other people don't have it this way. What's wrong with us?
00:07:41Why do we always have to be the ones that scrimp and save and never have anything?
00:07:46Was that my fault?
00:07:48You did get laid off.
00:07:50Sure didn't help any with the bills when you got pregnant.
00:07:53I did? You didn't have anything to do with it?
00:07:57Other people have nice things.
00:07:59A decent car, live in a nice house.
00:08:02Work is slow in my trade, that's all. Is that my fault?
00:08:06Your trade?
00:08:07I'm so sick of hearing about it!
00:08:10Thanks, Edna.
00:08:26Oh, honey, I'm sorry about what I said.
00:08:32I didn't mean it was your fault.
00:08:37But are people supposed to live like this?
00:08:40We sit here, we wait.
00:08:43Well, maybe in San Diego.
00:08:50I don't know.
00:08:52I don't know what I'm gonna do to get this thing fixed.
00:08:55I'm sorry about what I said.
00:09:05I'll fix you a sandwich.
00:09:07No, I don't want it.
00:09:08You go ahead.
00:09:09I better get a starter.
00:09:10Maybe some junkyard someplace.
00:09:40You know what's in the middle there?
00:09:53A Lincoln Continental.
00:09:55Ha, ha, ha, ha, that's class.
00:09:58A total bounce, smashed up.
00:10:017,000 bucks that car cost Newland.
00:10:03Look at it.
00:10:04Hey, is that the one with the dame?
00:10:06You know, the dame was smashed up all over the upholstery.
00:10:09The dame was smashed up, the car was smashed up, the bottle was smashed up, payments were smashed up, the dough was smashed up, the radio was smashed up, the heater was smashed up, the kids was killed in the back seat, and the dog was cut in two.
00:10:24How do you know?
00:10:25You like that stuff?
00:10:26I know.
00:10:27That's all I know it.
00:10:29Front and back, I know everything in here.
00:10:32I know every damn thing, and if they made worms out of it all, we could stick one on the hook and watch it wiggle while we went fishing.
00:10:39Ah, you don't know so much.
00:10:42I know.
00:10:44Ah, you see, they all come in here with money and they want to get out cheap.
00:10:48I'll get them out cheap with a pot that don't fit, how about that?
00:10:51You got a great idea for laughs, Harry.
00:10:53That ain't laughs.
00:10:54That's the difference between business and not business.
00:10:57That's the difference that makes me stink and you crawl.
00:11:00If you're so smart, why ain't you rich?
00:11:02Hell, Harry, you are rich.
00:11:07Hey, you want a beer, Harry?
00:11:09You want a beer, Harry?
00:11:11All you got to hand out is beer.
00:11:13You hand out too much and then I ain't thirsty anymore.
00:11:16Well, it's your beer.
00:11:18You tell me to give it away.
00:11:19I had all I want.
00:11:21Is it all right, Harry?
00:11:23Now get out of here.
00:11:25You ain't ugly, Harry.
00:11:27Ah, shut up.
00:11:29Shut up.
00:11:30Oh, that's good.
00:11:32Thanks.
00:11:33Here you are.
00:11:34Oh, you wanna buy a beer?
00:11:35Oh, you got to buy a beer?
00:11:36Well, you're in here.
00:11:37All right.
00:11:38I'm back then.
00:11:39Oh, God.
00:11:39And you're welcome.
00:11:41Oh, you're welcome.
00:11:42You're welcome.
00:11:43I'm back then.
00:11:44Oh, yeah.
00:11:45Oh, yeah, much fun.
00:11:46Hey, uh, you ever get so, uh, you didn't want beer and, uh, you wanted something else?
00:12:06Like you was thirsty and it, uh, wouldn't come for you no more.
00:12:16Well, Harry, we got a complaint on you for, uh, selling the parts off stolen cars.
00:12:24I got no criminal intentions except crime.
00:12:28You got a warrant?
00:12:29Don't worry about it.
00:12:31The sergeant just wants to see you down at this station.
00:12:34Okay, I'm a taxpayer and if I pay taxes, I guess you got a right.
00:12:38But this ain't the first time and you know that.
00:12:40But I'm still here and you're still there and I still pay taxes.
00:12:46Hey, you got a starter for a 48 Ford?
00:12:56Who the hell are you?
00:12:57What difference does that make?
00:12:59I'm a customer.
00:13:00You got that starter?
00:13:02I got everything.
00:13:04Looks, brains, class, but a 48, nothing.
00:13:09Where you going?
00:13:11San Diego.
00:13:11I got a job promised there.
00:13:13You know, if they was to ask a college professor what this was, he wouldn't know.
00:13:18If they was to ask Kennedy and his grandmother's bunions depended on it, he wouldn't know.
00:13:23Einstein wouldn't know.
00:13:25Elizabeth Taylor wouldn't know.
00:13:27Hey, hey, hey, that's mine.
00:13:30Go get it then.
00:13:31You got one like that?
00:13:33Sure, I got one.
00:13:34King of England, eh?
00:13:36Me?
00:13:37I got it.
00:13:38How much you want for it.
00:13:41What are you going to San Diego for?
00:13:43I got a job promised there.
00:13:44Look, I'll give you five bucks.
00:13:47Hey, how many push-ups can you do?
00:13:49Five, ten, a hundred?
00:13:50What the hell are you talking about?
00:13:51That's what kids do in school.
00:13:52Are you trying to tell me how to run everything with your big-time five bucks and you can't do any push-ups?
00:13:57Hey, big-time operator with a 48 Ford.
00:14:00You don't even know what he is.
00:14:01Ah, shut up, Blowhard.
00:14:03He comes in here talking about 48 a bad year and you come down the cracks like a bug.
00:14:06Go away.
00:14:07Listen, I'll tell you the truth.
00:14:08If I had any dough, I wouldn't be driving a clunker and come in here.
00:14:11Yeah, and your aunt wouldn't run a beer hall in Peoria.
00:14:14Hey, go ahead, do some push-ups, Blowhard.
00:14:23Hey, look at that.
00:14:24Now, that's a real man.
00:14:28All right, that's enough.
00:14:29Get up, Blowhard.
00:14:29Look, how about my starter?
00:14:32Hey, do you want to drink, Blowhard?
00:14:33Nothing but liquid.
00:14:34I want to drink nothing that don't pour.
00:14:36Hey, how about you?
00:14:37Can you do some push-ups like Blowhard here?
00:14:39For God's sakes, yes.
00:14:40What's that got to do with it?
00:14:41Ah, that's the trouble with you kids that don't think about nothing.
00:14:44You get a car when you're 16, with hair under your arms and then it's the back seat.
00:14:48Am I right?
00:14:49Hey, hey, look, why don't you do some push-ups?
00:14:52I'll tell you what I do.
00:14:54You do more push-ups than Blowhard and I'll give you the starter.
00:14:58Hey, hey, hey, that's more than Rockefeller could do for you.
00:15:00Look, I said I'd give you five bucks.
00:15:03What, do you want me to do push-ups like a dog or something and get down in the dirt for you?
00:15:07Dog can't do push-ups.
00:15:09He's got four legs.
00:15:11All right, let me see the five bucks.
00:15:13Where's the starter?
00:15:14Where's your car?
00:15:17Down the road.
00:15:19Look, why don't you do some push-ups?
00:15:20Do some push-ups like Blowhard and it'll build up your muscles.
00:15:23I don't want any muscles.
00:15:24All I want is my starter.
00:15:26You know, I could tell you go back there and look.
00:15:29I don't have to do business with you.
00:15:31You have to do business with me.
00:15:33If I wasn't broke, I'd walk out.
00:15:35But you are.
00:15:37You know what it costs me?
00:15:38Nothing.
00:15:39I wreck a clunker and get all the parts.
00:15:42Ah, but you'll get it.
00:15:43But first the beer, okay?
00:15:45What is this?
00:15:46Well, nothing.
00:15:47It'll take a little time, but Blowhard will get you the starter.
00:15:50Five bucks.
00:15:51Go inside and pay the girl.
00:15:52Enjoy yourself.
00:15:54Have a beer.
00:15:54What are you going to do about that cop, Harry?
00:16:06Don't worry.
00:16:07Keep Floyd around.
00:16:08I like him.
00:16:09I like him.
00:16:09I like him.
00:16:39It's not fair you're sneaking in here like that.
00:17:06I like him.
00:17:16Thanks.
00:17:17Oh, Harry buys it, see.
00:17:18I can drink all I want.
00:17:20Well, like I told him, I just want to get my car running again.
00:17:24Well, he's got lots of parts.
00:17:25I don't know why you couldn't get one.
00:17:27He's got every kind of part from every kind of thing.
00:17:30I mean it, every kind.
00:17:32Kind of nuts, isn't he?
00:17:34I mean he acted screwy or something instead of wanting to sell me a part.
00:17:37Harry?
00:17:38He's got money even stuck away in the dirt.
00:17:40You aren't married to him, are you?
00:17:42No, I ain't married.
00:17:45Harry ain't married.
00:17:47Not that he's not all right.
00:17:48You work for him?
00:17:50I don't just hang around.
00:17:52You mean you're his girl?
00:17:53No.
00:17:54What do you mean, his girl?
00:17:58If you mean, am I a girl, yes, I'm a girl.
00:18:04Don't you believe it?
00:18:06Sure, I believe it.
00:18:08But I mean, I thought you were his girl if you'd hang around with him.
00:18:11Does somebody have to be somebody's girl all the time?
00:18:14Why not just be a girl, period?
00:18:17Maybe I'm my own girl.
00:18:19Maybe I don't even like Harry.
00:18:20Don't like anybody except my own self.
00:18:24Did you know that those girls like that?
00:18:28They don't like anybody except their own self.
00:18:31Like in prison and places like that.
00:18:34You know what I mean?
00:18:36I don't know if I do or not.
00:18:39And?
00:18:40There's girls that like other girls.
00:18:43Oh, you don't like that, do you?
00:18:46Men don't like that.
00:18:47Girls that like other girls.
00:18:49I think it's funny.
00:18:50It doesn't make any sense.
00:18:51Oh, what does?
00:18:56Regular.
00:18:58Family.
00:18:59Oh.
00:18:59Kid.
00:19:00When did you ever add up everything you've ever done and tell all about it?
00:19:05How about it?
00:19:06Everything?
00:19:08Didn't you ever get turned around all upside down and not know everything you were doing?
00:19:14You sure talk a lot.
00:19:17Oh.
00:19:18Do I?
00:19:20Maybe you don't like a girl that talks so much.
00:19:24Don't talk and lie to.
00:19:27Is that better?
00:19:28Look, like I told that guy outside, all I want to get is that part, pay for it and then leave.
00:19:34What the hell kind of a place is this anyway?
00:19:36You know how I can tell you're married?
00:19:40You're scared of me.
00:19:42You're scared of me because you're scared of your own self.
00:19:44And you're scared of your wife and you're scared of everything.
00:19:47What have I got to be scared of?
00:19:48What have I got to be scared of?
00:19:50Maybe I don't even like to look at you.
00:19:51Anyhow, what's all this talk about?
00:19:53Here, I'm done.
00:19:54Thanks.
00:19:55What do you think?
00:19:55God's looking?
00:19:56I don't even know what you're talking about except it's crazy.
00:19:58I don't look down all the time.
00:20:00Think he can see right in here, see right through these walls?
00:20:02Or maybe your wife's gone and she can look down and see right through these walls here.
00:20:05Are you trying to make a fool out of me?
00:20:07That guy's right out there and you're his girl.
00:20:09Harry?
00:20:09Well, Harry ain't gone.
00:20:11He can't look down in here out of a cloud.
00:20:12What kind of a racket is this?
00:20:14You sure picked the wrong guy.
00:20:16I haven't got any money.
00:20:17I haven't got anything.
00:20:18All I got is enough to get to San Diego plus five bucks, which he could get easy enough
00:20:22just by giving me a piece out of a car he's just wrecked.
00:20:26You want another beer?
00:20:27No, I don't.
00:20:31What's the matter, honey?
00:20:32You think God's looking down counting the beers you drink?
00:20:35One more beer and he marks it down in his big book?
00:20:38Think that's all he's got to do?
00:20:40He ought to be a census taker.
00:20:44Oh, come on, take it.
00:20:46God's busy right now watching some people in the backseat of a car.
00:20:50Go on.
00:20:53I can't figure you out or that guy out there either.
00:20:57What do you think there is to figure out?
00:21:00He's nuts.
00:21:01That's what's wrong with him.
00:21:05Like you want me to do them crazy push-ups?
00:21:07Yeah.
00:21:07Now he wants me to make a pass at you and then you'll holler and he comes in here with the
00:21:11other guy and they beat the hell out of me.
00:21:12Is that it?
00:21:13I don't holler.
00:21:14A lady doesn't ever holler because it's not polite.
00:21:17Oh, yeah, I can get a big picture of that.
00:21:20Well, if he comes in here now, he's going to get a little bit more than he bargained for you.
00:21:23Harry?
00:21:24Oh, honey, what a story.
00:21:25You don't know.
00:21:28Don't you trust me?
00:21:30Why should I?
00:21:31You ought to trust someone.
00:21:32You know, one time a kid came in here looking for parts for his big brother's hot rod.
00:21:40Well, he couldn't have been more than 14.
00:21:44What, are you crazy?
00:21:47You mean to tell me you came in here with a 14-year-old boy?
00:21:51Why?
00:21:52For what?
00:21:53Well, Harry said to.
00:21:54I didn't care.
00:21:55What?
00:21:57Well, now, why should I lie?
00:21:58What's the difference?
00:21:59How about when you were 14?
00:22:01Why not a little help?
00:22:03How old are you anyway?
00:22:05How old do I look?
00:22:08Not so old.
00:22:09Maybe my age.
00:22:11Maybe the 14-year-old kid thought I was his age.
00:22:15All you got is outside.
00:22:18That's where it counts, isn't it?
00:22:21That's where you can see it, the outside.
00:22:24Not a bad outside, is it?
00:22:26It's all right.
00:22:27What do you mean, all right?
00:22:28Like it knows how.
00:22:30But not nice.
00:22:32Nice enough to touch.
00:22:34Some things you keep your hands off of.
00:22:36Why?
00:22:36Why?
00:22:37Because it's right, that's why.
00:22:39It only takes a minute.
00:22:47Five minutes, that's all.
00:22:49Did you ever look at a clock?
00:22:51That's all it takes, actual time.
00:22:54Five minutes, maybe.
00:22:55Then what?
00:22:56It's all over.
00:22:57It's all over.
00:22:59There's no sign left, no mark.
00:23:01Nobody can tell.
00:23:02It's all done and passed.
00:23:04Just two people for five minutes.
00:23:08That's all it means to you.
00:23:11That's all it is, the real of it.
00:23:14If you make it anything more than that, it's your own fault.
00:23:17You're crazy.
00:23:18I got a wife.
00:23:20Good.
00:23:20Bring home the paycheck.
00:23:22What's that got to do with something that happens in five minutes and doesn't leave a mark for anyone to see or know?
00:23:27I'd know.
00:23:28What, you and God write it down in a big book?
00:23:31Tuesday, five minutes, sin like a mink.
00:23:34I wouldn't want my wife coming in here with some other guy.
00:23:39What's that got to do with it?
00:23:41She isn't here.
00:23:42She isn't you.
00:23:43She wouldn't know.
00:24:04Do you know if Bryant Road runs through to here or does it stop on the other side of the freeway?
00:24:28I really don't know.
00:24:29My husband and I were just passing through.
00:24:34I came out Highway 39.
00:24:37At least that's what the map said.
00:24:40I think there was a gas station back there at the turnoff.
00:24:44Maybe they would know.
00:24:46We were just passing through.
00:24:49How old is he?
00:24:52She.
00:24:53Four months.
00:24:56I see you have car troubles too.
00:24:59Cars just aren't going to be trusted.
00:25:01Well, I think I'll try that gas station you mentioned.
00:25:04Bye-bye.
00:25:04Bye-bye.
00:25:16Don't act like you guys don't know me.
00:25:18I'm not just anybody.
00:25:19To me, you're just anybody.
00:25:20Well, then you need glasses because the day I am just anybody,
00:25:23they will be looking for new bricks to build City Hall.
00:25:26Exactly what is that supposed to mean?
00:25:27What do you want it to mean?
00:25:28I don't put it in what goes on in your head.
00:25:30You have to do that.
00:25:31I'm just saying I don't like it when Frank Buck here starts acting like you guys have never seen me before.
00:25:35Who are you calling Frank Buck?
00:25:36I'm calling you Frank Buck because if I called your liver face, you'd probably get excited about it.
00:25:41Can I hit this guy?
00:25:42All right, now, wait a minute.
00:25:43Look, Harry, you be reasoned wrong.
00:25:44Keep your mouth shut and everything will go a lot better.
00:25:46Did you hit him?
00:25:47Right away he says, can I hit?
00:25:49What, are you a little kid or something?
00:25:51You want to hit somebody, you have to ask him permission like it was your father?
00:25:55Ah, don't you know better than to hit a businessman?
00:25:58Who do you think pays your salary and puts the brass badge on you so you can't hit people?
00:26:03Now, I'm a businessman.
00:26:04And if you think you can go around hitting businessmen like they were Pachucos,
00:26:07you'll end up going to work for a living, am I right?
00:26:09You're practically right of him to do it.
00:26:11Ah, so he's got to learn.
00:26:12No matter how dumb he is, he's got to learn.
00:26:15You see that?
00:26:16And that?
00:26:16Now, that shows I'm a businessman.
00:26:18If you think you can mess around with a businessman,
00:26:20you ought to go back to shining shoes for a living.
00:26:23Boy, are you dumb.
00:26:24I'll belt you one if you come out with any more of that dumb stuff.
00:26:27Go ahead, it'll relax your tension.
00:26:30Lay off him, Harry.
00:26:31We've got to complain on you and that's why you're down here.
00:26:33We've got to do something about it.
00:26:34Do something dumb.
00:26:35Don't make me laugh.
00:26:36You old uncle might lay one on you.
00:26:38Ah, the trouble with you fellas is you're all alike.
00:26:40You're either too dumb or too lazy or think you're too smart to work for a living.
00:26:44And then you've got a nasty streak or else you'd be firemen instead.
00:26:48You want to wear a badge and a gun and a fathead to run somebody else around.
00:26:53Do you know why?
00:26:54Because you're nothing your own self and you want to fool somebody.
00:26:58That's enough.
00:26:59Harry, you keep your mouth shut.
00:27:00You, no more pokes at him.
00:27:02We'll find out about this and no ass to get punched.
00:27:05Ah, give him somebody else to smack around with me, not me.
00:27:09Maybe he's not getting any at home and he needs some.
00:27:11Hey, don't you have any drunks around?
00:27:14Some, some Mexican kids?
00:27:15Give him something for God's sake.
00:27:17Get your trap shut or I'll break your damn name.
00:27:19Look, that's all over now.
00:27:20We have a complaint on you that says you've been taking stolen cars and selling them.
00:27:23Now what about it?
00:27:25Well, you know how it is.
00:27:26A couple of kids come in and they sell stuff and they buy stuff.
00:27:30How am I supposed to know which is a stolen hubcap and which ain't?
00:27:33Nobody can tell by lucky.
00:27:36Now with an engine, it's different.
00:27:37It's got a serial number on it.
00:27:39What if I were to come down and look in your yard now?
00:27:42You might find a couple of engines with stolen numbers on them.
00:27:46Right where they was planted.
00:27:48Well, somebody's got to be on a hook for this.
00:27:50They got copies downtown.
00:27:52Uh, do you want to know who is stealing cars and trying to sell them to me?
00:27:59Yeah.
00:27:59I'm thinking I almost remember a punk who is a car thief and is trying to sell me a hot car.
00:28:11You almost remember that.
00:28:13That's right.
00:28:14I almost do.
00:28:17And you want me to ask you who it is?
00:28:19Go ahead.
00:28:20Ask me.
00:28:21Maybe I could remember.
00:28:22And maybe you could remember to keep your hands off a businessman.
00:28:27Maybe this guy you're trying to remember.
00:28:29Maybe he's a businessman also.
00:28:31No, no, no.
00:28:32He ain't established enough.
00:28:34He's just a pen.
00:28:35And a car thief.
00:28:37Yeah.
00:28:38You'll testify and give evidence about this guy.
00:28:43Yeah.
00:28:44He tried to sell you hot cars.
00:28:46Direct.
00:28:47Yeah, he's over at my place right now.
00:28:51All right, we'll pick him up.
00:28:54Got a hand with you, Harry.
00:28:57You're shrewd.
00:28:58Real shrewd.
00:29:01Yeah.
00:29:08All right, we'll be right back.
00:29:38Hey, what about my starter?
00:29:53Oh, I had to call another yard.
00:29:58It'll be about half an hour.
00:29:59All right.
00:30:08You got a mentality of about 15 cents.
00:30:20But I'm very big on personality.
00:30:22You see that?
00:30:24Don't mean nothing.
00:30:25The Egyptians invented paper and they made slaves out of skinny people.
00:30:31The verities of life, the truths, that's what counts.
00:30:34The cohabitation of love in the animal act of procreation.
00:30:37And the self-esteem is watered down in the flower of approval of others,
00:30:42such as fame and the necessities of eating.
00:30:44I think Harry imported the Mary J. marijuana and blew some nose dusts,
00:30:52phosgene, codeine, and morphine in it.
00:30:58Why?
00:30:59Because it rots and corrodes at human purpose.
00:31:02You wallow and roll in dope and filthy companions.
00:31:06Dope is sinful.
00:31:06Sin is dope, folks.
00:31:13Was your family a fink to you, too?
00:31:15They wanted me to work hard at what I was doing,
00:31:17and I wanted to work easy at it, but not at all.
00:31:20Lack of moral fiber.
00:31:21Fibrous moral tissue.
00:31:22Tissue, paper, fiber, paper.
00:31:25Hey!
00:31:26You are fluky.
00:31:27Boy, what you thought fluky.
00:31:29You are.
00:31:29Self-destructive impulse to wallow in the filth of abnegation.
00:31:32Paper abnegation.
00:31:33Young Freudian abnegation.
00:31:35Foam sucking.
00:31:36What's an abnegation?
00:31:38An abnegation is like a rotten apple.
00:31:40One rotten apple spoils the barrel, right?
00:31:42But the barrel is made out of rotten apple cores,
00:31:45and the core apple is barrel rotten,
00:31:47and the whew!
00:31:48Stick a finger in your eye.
00:31:50You don't want to be decent.
00:31:52Some aren't.
00:31:53And they're all evolutionary.
00:31:55No damn good.
00:31:56You and me.
00:31:57Me.
00:31:57Me.
00:31:58Me.
00:31:59Yeah, me.
00:32:06You and me.
00:32:07No.
00:32:08Nobody's got just their own self.
00:32:11There's somebody else inside your head that matters what happens.
00:32:16Everybody's got something.
00:32:17I got a wife, kid.
00:32:19My folks still pay attention.
00:32:21I used to live in Houston.
00:32:22Well, what about there?
00:32:23Well, I could spit all over that place and not hit nothing I liked.
00:32:26Well, you got something.
00:32:28Well, I got a little girl.
00:32:30Nobody ever didn't say I didn't have a little girl.
00:32:33She was this baby I had.
00:32:35Nobody ever said I didn't take care of her.
00:32:37All I said was,
00:32:38everybody has something outside their own skin.
00:32:42You said you have a little girl.
00:32:45That's all.
00:32:46I take care of her all the time.
00:32:48Anytime she wants anything.
00:32:50Whether she wants it or not, I get it for her.
00:32:53Anything, you understand?
00:32:54How come if you and Harry has a little girl, you stay here?
00:32:59What kind of a crumb is he?
00:33:01You having a little girl.
00:33:03Well, I had my baby before I ever knew Harry.
00:33:06I used to have a husband.
00:33:08He married me before I let him get close enough for anything.
00:33:14Can you imagine that?
00:33:17All that trouble.
00:33:19The ceremony.
00:33:21All the fuss.
00:33:22There's something that takes five minutes.
00:33:27I got to go now.
00:33:29Thanks for the beer.
00:33:30Wait a minute.
00:33:32I was eight months pregnant.
00:33:34He couldn't wait.
00:33:35Eight months pregnant.
00:33:36He couldn't wait around night.
00:33:37So he went out.
00:33:39Went down to South Hoover Street.
00:33:41Looking for a fast five minutes.
00:33:42Well, doesn't that prove what I said?
00:33:44There's more to it than five minutes.
00:33:46If there wasn't, you wouldn't feel that way about it.
00:33:49I don't feel anything.
00:33:50Well, what do you think?
00:33:52It can be all like dogs or something?
00:33:54You know that.
00:33:55You feel it.
00:33:56Oh, we'll feel some way about it.
00:33:59He was down on South Hoover Street.
00:34:00And the knife sliced across him here.
00:34:02So when he straightened up, if somebody, I don't know, when he straightened up, the cut parts of his stomach came out in his hands.
00:34:08So he had to hold them, keep them from falling.
00:34:10And then they had him in the hospital with the stitches holding everything in.
00:34:13Sewed him up with a metal wire.
00:34:15But then the infection bloated him until the stitch place turned green and he died.
00:34:19I'm sorry.
00:34:21Then I had my baby in the same hospital.
00:34:23Oh, I'm sorry.
00:34:25Real sorry.
00:34:27Harry doesn't say that.
00:34:30Harry says, what if it had been a traffic accident?
00:34:33The same thing would have happened.
00:34:35Dead.
00:34:36Dead is dead.
00:34:36Any way it happens.
00:34:37That's what Harry says.
00:34:39Five minutes is five minutes.
00:34:40Any way it happens.
00:34:41That's what Harry says.
00:34:43I'm sorry.
00:34:45Oh, what's to be sorry?
00:34:46You think I worry about it?
00:34:48I don't think about it.
00:34:49I'm just telling you.
00:34:49That's all.
00:34:50When did this happen?
00:34:53I don't know.
00:34:53Two or three years ago?
00:34:55A couple of months?
00:34:56I don't think about it.
00:34:57It don't mean nothing to me.
00:34:59Well, I...
00:35:00I gotta be heading out.
00:35:01Oh, no, don't...
00:35:02Don't go.
00:35:04Oh, can't you stay a while?
00:35:06I'll get you some more beer.
00:35:08No.
00:35:09Thanks a lot.
00:35:10I don't want any more.
00:35:12Oh, you sure you gotta go?
00:35:14I've got to.
00:35:16You're not mad at me, are you?
00:35:17No, I'm not mad.
00:35:18You're not mad about how I talked?
00:35:20No.
00:35:21Oh.
00:35:23Do you like me a little?
00:35:25Sure, I like you.
00:35:26Like I said, I'm really sorry.
00:35:30Oh, I don't even think about it.
00:35:32Well, goodbye.
00:35:34You're not mad at me, are you?
00:35:36No, I'm not mad.
00:35:37But like I said, I'm sorry.
00:35:40I don't even think about it.
00:35:49I don't even think about it.
00:35:49Really?
00:35:51Well, goodbye.
00:35:56I don't even know.
00:36:02No.
00:36:04No.
00:36:04No.
00:36:05Hey, buddy.
00:36:35They got Floyd screwed down and nailed.
00:36:50Yeah, well, who says it's not going to be you and me next, Flohy.
00:36:53Well, Harry loves us. We keep business going for him.
00:36:56Harry's got no nature. He's a voyeur.
00:36:58He's a what?
00:36:59Maybe I ought to get my little tin can out of here, too.
00:37:02Go and be gone like the god of Mohammed, Missoula.
00:37:04Go?
00:37:05Where else could you have it so good?
00:37:07Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche says that the power is beyond good and evil, Flohy.
00:37:10Now, you wouldn't know that, but it isn't true.
00:37:12Harry is greedy and he's rusty like all the junk in one city.
00:37:17Hey, you're already hot.
00:37:19You found another steak.
00:37:21Last one, Flohy.
00:37:23Around here is like all the puke and the rotten stuff that they cut out of you at the hospital.
00:37:28You can't live in this like a bloated green rat.
00:37:31Do you like having him outside watching you do it with some poor dame that's off a rocker?
00:37:35What's his worry?
00:37:36I get mine.
00:37:38Food, love, drink, and the euphoria of the non-habit-forming weeds.
00:37:41Safety and evil.
00:37:42And greed takes from the weak.
00:37:45What else?
00:37:47Oh, what else could a guy want?
00:37:49Nietzsche, the croc said the strong ought to take from the weak and grind the faces of the poor.
00:37:57It turns your stomach up close.
00:38:00Boy, are you nuts.
00:38:02Talking and jabbering.
00:38:03Power!
00:38:04The superman.
00:38:05Now, is Harry a superman, huh?
00:38:07You know that car wreck did him in.
00:38:09Now, pretty soon he's going to have to stop having to shave.
00:38:12And that leg.
00:38:14Nietzsche, the croc was a wreck too.
00:38:15Only one thing I don't like about pot.
00:38:20It takes your nature for a while and you can't get excited about it.
00:38:24Like I'm a superman, blowhard.
00:38:27I want a car, I steal it.
00:38:28I got money, I got love.
00:38:31You know the Arabs call that stuff hashish.
00:38:33And look what it got him.
00:38:34Arabia!
00:38:34How come you come down here anyway?
00:38:38Leave your little bird home and your lawyer or papa in the house?
00:38:42I didn't pay my library fines.
00:38:45I came with a good life.
00:38:47Power!
00:38:47Nietzsche!
00:38:48Carnegie!
00:38:49Rockefeller!
00:38:50Laissez-faire!
00:38:51Poontang!
00:38:52The giants of aggressive men!
00:38:55You're not so damn smart.
00:38:59Falling on the throne before power!
00:39:02Millionaire Harry, Tycoon Harry, King Harry!
00:39:07And all them, the mudsil class!
00:39:11You know who said that?
00:39:12Randolph of Virginia.
00:39:13And he was impotent too.
00:39:15Who's that, you little fink?
00:39:17The humble, dirty, the slaves of civilization.
00:39:22The mud, the people, the inferiors.
00:39:25Randolph of Virginia, 1730.
00:39:27Shut up!
00:39:27Shut up!
00:39:28Shut up!
00:39:29I'm going to get out of here, blowhard.
00:39:30You saw that cop car, didn't you?
00:39:32Well, I don't want it coming for me, too.
00:39:33Maybe I better go back and pay my library fines.
00:39:36You won't go nowhere because you love the weed.
00:39:40You love it!
00:39:41Yeah, well, maybe I do and maybe I don't.
00:39:44You love it!
00:39:45You love it!
00:39:47You love it!
00:39:52I'll save a little hot baby for you.
00:39:55You'll come back because you love it!
00:39:59You love it!
00:40:01You love it!
00:40:02You love it!
00:40:04You love it!
00:40:06I'm in a bad mood.
00:40:20Where do you run them?
00:40:22Run what?
00:40:23It's a hot guard to steal, weiss guy.
00:40:25Where do you sell them?
00:40:26No place, damn it.
00:40:28You mean you admit stealing them, but you're not saying where you sell them?
00:40:31I don't admit nothing.
00:40:33What are you guys nuts? You better ask him.
00:40:35We know who to ask, but you better get the answers real fast.
00:40:37I don't steal any damn cars.
00:40:43Tell him I just came to your place today.
00:40:46Tell him what?
00:40:48I'll see you around.
00:40:50Where do you sell the cars?
00:40:52I don't sell no cars!
00:40:54I don't sell no cars!
00:40:56I don't sell no cars!
00:41:18I don't sell no cars!
00:41:24Yeah, that's it. Give him the old justice.
00:41:46I swear to God, if you don't do so much, look at him.
00:41:50He's trying to make out like he didn't have anything to do with it.
00:41:52Go ahead, give him some more.
00:41:54Yeah, funny, isn't it? And you're gonna build a case on this guy.
00:41:56Supposing he doesn't sign anything.
00:41:58I just came into his place. He lies and he stole no cards.
00:42:01Hey, you should try to get innocent people into trouble.
00:42:04Upbeat him. God, stop him.
00:42:07I run a decent business and punks like you trying to spoil him.
00:42:10You got a sign?
00:42:11Hey, hey, hey. Does it make you feel good?
00:42:12I mean, when you hit him, it hurts a little out of your fist.
00:42:14It makes you feel good almost like you're getting a little hurt.
00:42:16It ain't funny. Just as soon as you was him.
00:42:22Did a man in a dark shirt come in here?
00:42:41This is a junkyard!
00:42:45Well, my husband came in looking for a part for his car.
00:42:49I got tired so I thought I might find him here.
00:42:53It's just down the road.
00:42:55What kind of part?
00:42:57A starter. He had on a dark shirt, black hair. I thought he might...
00:43:02Oh, 48 Ford.
00:43:04Yes. Was he in here?
00:43:08Uh, yeah.
00:43:10He said to give it to you if you came in.
00:43:14It's over here.
00:43:16That's funny.
00:43:18He said to give it to me if I came in?
00:43:22Where did he go?
00:43:24Search us! All we got is a junkyard.
00:43:26Here you are.
00:43:27I wouldn't even know if it was the right part.
00:43:29Well, it's the right one, okay. 48 Ford.
00:43:31Well, I don't even have the money to pay for it.
00:43:33You don't need any.
00:43:34He paid for it already?
00:43:35No.
00:43:36It's, uh, Free Starter Week is a memorial to the junk business.
00:43:39Oh, you're crazy.
00:43:40Oh, you're fooling me.
00:43:41He already paid for it.
00:43:43Well, if it's the right part, I guess I might as well take it back to the car.
00:44:01Didn't he say where he was going or when he'd be back?
00:44:05No.
00:44:06Well, thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
00:44:12I hope this starter fits.
00:44:14Well, won't it?
00:44:16I mean, if it's the same kind and everything.
00:44:19Yeah.
00:44:21Say, why don't I take it down there for you?
00:44:26If you get your hands all greasy.
00:44:29Well, all right.
00:44:33That's it.
00:44:34Well, you can't put it in without no tools.
00:44:36Oh, thanks a lot. My husband will be back in a minute.
00:44:43I like to lay down on the cars. I get a feeling about laying down on the cars. You know I can fix this thing?
00:45:00I can put the starter in and you'll be rolling in no time. I'm pretty good with a tool.
00:45:05Hey, what if your husband don't come back? I got a feeling about people coming back. Sometimes they do and sometimes they go off and don't ever come back. I'm that way myself.
00:45:15You need to wait.
00:45:17Oh, wait.
00:45:18You know, I could have been an athlete if I got the right chance.
00:45:21My husband was promised a job in San Diego, where they make missiles and things.
00:45:28Where are you?
00:45:29I think he's gonna have a job at the right place.
00:45:30Where are you?
00:45:31Well, you came back.
00:45:32I've got a feeling about people coming back.
00:45:34Sometimes they do... and, you know, sometimes they go off and don't ever come back.
00:45:37I'm that way myself.
00:45:38You need a way.
00:45:39Oh, wait.
00:45:43You know, I could have been an athlete if I got the right chance.
00:45:45My husband was promised a job in San Diego, where they make missiles and things.
00:45:51You know, you're pretty nice looking.
00:45:54You better go back to your job.
00:45:57My husband will be here in a minute.
00:45:59All I said was, you're nice looking.
00:46:01Is that a crime?
00:46:04Look, I'll tell you what I'll do.
00:46:05I'll get the tow truck, I'll hook it on the car,
00:46:07and I'll tow it to the yard.
00:46:12What will it cost?
00:46:14I'll take the maybe so.
00:46:38I guess you would.
00:46:39How's he going to stand up and give evidence in court?
00:46:41You've got a great mind, Sergeant.
00:46:43I like you.
00:46:44I don't doubt it.
00:46:45I've got to wash my hands.
00:46:46A guy splattered on me.
00:46:46Yeah, go wash your hands.
00:46:48It's a great experience.
00:46:49Wise, wise guy.
00:46:51Don't forget, I just assumed it was you,
00:46:52and maybe it's going to be.
00:46:53Why wouldn't you wish it, you dumb cop?
00:46:55You're going to get yours, wise guy.
00:46:57That stuff you've got out in the back
00:46:58ain't going to save you forever.
00:46:59That stuff's going to wear out.
00:47:00Clean your hands.
00:47:01Yeah, yeah, go clean your hands, you heard him.
00:47:04Get up, Harry.
00:47:06Now, one of these days, Harry,
00:47:07it may not go so good for you.
00:47:10It goes all right out there on my shack, don't it?
00:47:12That doesn't mean very much anymore.
00:47:15Stuff like that's easy to come by.
00:47:19You and I have known one another for a long time, Harry.
00:47:23I'd like to be a friend to somebody that treats me right.
00:47:25But you're making it difficult.
00:47:29Your mouth is a lot bigger than you are.
00:47:32You know, I stood here right now, and I asked myself,
00:47:34why shouldn't I turn Joe loose on you?
00:47:39Let Harry get the hell beat out of him.
00:47:42What's the difference?
00:47:42You're nothing to me.
00:47:44Oh, you've paid me a few favors,
00:47:46shown me a good time.
00:47:48But everything's got to end.
00:47:54You know, when Joe gets back here,
00:47:56I'm going to be on edge.
00:47:59One edge that says,
00:48:00should I let you get along with me?
00:48:03And the other edge that, uh...
00:48:05That says, should I throw you in the corner
00:48:09like a chunk of meat to a dog?
00:48:11Sergeant,
00:48:13you could have been a big man
00:48:16except for one thing.
00:48:18There is no except one thing
00:48:19to that big mouth of yours.
00:48:20Now look, don't make me mad, Harry.
00:48:21You got one big fault,
00:48:23and that is you're dumb.
00:48:25You know why you're dumb?
00:48:26Because I gave you something.
00:48:29I gave you money,
00:48:30and I wrote it down in a book.
00:48:32I gave you some stuff in my shack,
00:48:35and I got a camera there that takes pictures.
00:48:38It takes pictures of you, Sergeant.
00:48:41And it takes pictures of anybody I want.
00:48:44Bare.
00:48:46So just let the steam roll back
00:48:48and swallow it like a good boy,
00:48:49and don't act so big.
00:48:51You're rotten and you're slick, Harry,
00:48:52but this isn't going to work with him.
00:48:55You're on the hook now yourself, I'm bad.
00:48:57Ah, what the hell do I care?
00:48:59I got pictures of you
00:49:01I wouldn't mind putting on City Hall.
00:49:03You got more jewels showing
00:49:05than the Tower of London.
00:49:11I bet he went in the shack with the pooch.
00:49:23Everybody does.
00:49:24What are you talking about?
00:49:26I could have been an athlete.
00:49:28I was offered a scholarship.
00:49:30Only it was when I was just out of high school
00:49:32and this girl ruined it for me.
00:49:33I don't know why I'm telling you all that,
00:49:35except I thought maybe he was wondering
00:49:36why I hang around Harry's wrecking yard
00:49:38and do stuff.
00:49:39These are my working clothes.
00:49:41Listen, if you get along with Harry,
00:49:43you won't have to pay for that starter enough
00:49:44and it could be worth quite a bet.
00:49:46You said...
00:49:47You don't know when your husband's going to come back.
00:49:50Anyway, like I said,
00:49:50he went to Harry's shack with the pooch.
00:49:52Pooch?
00:49:53What are you talking about?
00:49:55The blonde pooch that hangs around Harry's shack for him.
00:49:58She's crazy, so...
00:49:59My husband?
00:50:00He's the guy that came in with his starter.
00:50:02You're a liar.
00:50:03Get away from here.
00:50:06Get away from me.
00:50:07I'm not a liar.
00:50:08I'm just telling you.
00:50:09You better get away from here
00:50:10before my husband gets back.
00:50:12I suppose you don't want this car fixed.
00:50:14Get away from me.
00:50:15I don't watch you near me.
00:50:19It's a free country, ain't it?
00:50:21Free dirt.
00:50:22Like I said,
00:50:23I only wear these old clothes
00:50:24when I'm working around the yard for Harry.
00:50:25I look a lot different when I'm all dressed up.
00:50:27I got four suits.
00:50:29Anyway, I don't know why you're sore at me.
00:50:31I just told you about him going in there.
00:50:33You're a liar.
00:50:34All right, but I'm not.
00:50:36Boy, I've never been able to understand
00:50:37the facts of how a woman thinks.
00:50:39Like that girl who ruined my chances
00:50:40for athletics in college.
00:50:42I could have been a college graduate today
00:50:44only for what she'd done.
00:50:46Do you think what she'd done was right?
00:50:47Going down to college and said,
00:50:49I had to marry her.
00:50:50I don't know what kind of idiot you are,
00:50:52but if you don't get away from me,
00:50:54I'm going to yell my head off her car.
00:50:56Did I touch you?
00:50:57Did I lay a hand on you?
00:50:59I'm going to go out in the street
00:51:00until I see someone,
00:51:01and if you don't leave me alone,
00:51:02so I'll be good.
00:51:03I'm going to yell my head off her car.
00:51:05You think you've got something special?
00:51:06I never even smelled at you,
00:51:08so shut up.
00:51:09There's your damn car
00:51:10dragging that kid all around.
00:51:11I took care of plenty of kids in my time.
00:51:14The girl you didn't marry?
00:51:15That's a damn lie.
00:51:16Everybody had her, not just me.
00:51:18She just wanted to ruin my chances.
00:51:20Well, if that ain't something,
00:51:29and your old man is going to come back dunked.
00:51:33A woman don't have the facts
00:51:34to know what their brains tell them about nothing.
00:51:50A woman don't have the facts
00:52:20I'm just looking.
00:52:45What I do with my eyeballs
00:52:46you can't put me in jail for.
00:52:47I've done it with my eyeballs
00:52:49to lots of things.
00:52:50Young ones,
00:52:51old ones,
00:52:52fat ones,
00:52:52every kind.
00:52:53I see pictures in a magazine
00:52:54I do with my eyeballs.
00:52:56So wild,
00:52:56everybody does.
00:52:58You don't want me to go.
00:53:00You want me to stay.
00:53:03I know all about how a woman works.
00:53:05She says no,
00:53:06she means yes.
00:53:08She don't know what she wants
00:53:09until she gets it.
00:53:10Ain't that right?
00:53:13Just take it easy.
00:53:14You get all excited
00:53:15when you can just take it easy.
00:53:17That kid's hungry.
00:53:21Get him a hamburger.
00:53:24Go ahead,
00:53:24take it.
00:53:24Have a f***ing baby.
00:53:25You're not the sister.
00:53:49You're not the sister.
00:53:51You're not the sister.
00:53:52Come on.
00:53:53You're not the sister.
00:53:54Oh, my God.
00:54:24Oh, my God.
00:54:54Oh, my God.
00:55:24Oh, my God.
00:55:54All right, Harry, what are you going to do?
00:56:07I'm thinking about it.
00:56:09Look, all I'm saying is somebody's got to show up downtown.
00:56:12If this guy doesn't confess, then who will?
00:56:14Who's next, Harry?
00:56:17Blowhard?
00:56:18Well, I'm thinking.
00:56:22You can take it or leave it.
00:56:24Tell me, what do you do with a car thief?
00:56:25I mean, you put him on ice safe?
00:56:28Look, there's a routine.
00:56:29All you've got to worry about is the evidence.
00:56:32Blowhard?
00:56:35What's the matter, Harry?
00:56:35You scared now?
00:56:36No, I ain't scared.
00:56:40Just turning over the rocks for the worms.
00:56:42Like a cop that turns both ways.
00:56:45You're too smart to be a cop.
00:56:48Hell, you're almost smart enough to run a business and wreck cars like me.
00:56:53Thanks.
00:56:54Thanks a lot, Harry.
00:56:56Blowhard?
00:56:57Okay.
00:56:59Okay.
00:57:27Let's go.
00:57:57Hey, lady, what's wrong?
00:58:14Hey, lady, here, here.
00:58:16Now, let, let, let, hey.
00:58:19Well, lady, wait a minute.
00:58:21I didn't, I mean.
00:58:27I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't, I
00:58:57Hey, what are you doing, kid? What's wrong with you?
00:59:07Well, you sure banged your head. What for?
00:59:10Fledulation. Self-punishment.
00:59:15Everybody punishes himself because he craps out and he is no good.
00:59:19Nobody got punished. Nobody got hurt.
00:59:22No. It didn't hurt, hurt none.
00:59:27And I didn't hurt myself none, and you didn't hurt you none, and Harry didn't hurt him none,
00:59:32and the head didn't hurt the board none, and the stinking rotten stink didn't hurt the rock none,
00:59:38and what the hell do you think of that?
00:59:41You gotta bang it off if you don't watch out.
00:59:43Bang my head off? What are you talking about? I have 180 IQ!
00:59:48You got a deranged, stupid mentality, and you couldn't even make a living ironing shirts.
00:59:53But I don't have to stay here.
00:59:55Kid, you shouldn't feel sorry because you wrecked your head and everything.
00:59:58Look, are you gonna get out of here? Are you going away from that pimp, Harry?
01:00:02I don't know why you're mad at me!
01:00:03I'm not mad at you!
01:00:05Listen, do you think I have to take narcotics and stimulus?
01:00:09You think I have to depend on other people? I don't have to do that!
01:00:13I don't want to stand out here yelling!
01:00:15You don't bang your head no more. I'm gonna go over and take a little rest.
01:00:17No, no, no, wait a minute!
01:00:20Listen, I could ride on a bus, couldn't I?
01:00:23I could take you on a bus and you could get a job, be on a counter where they have coffee.
01:00:27Now come here!
01:00:28Pull on my sweater! You're gonna get your finger marks all over it.
01:00:31I didn't get finger marks on your stupid sweater.
01:00:34Well, you might as well get out of here. Harry don't even like you anyhow.
01:00:37Harry!
01:00:37Harry! Why do I want him?
01:00:44Why do I do what I do?
01:00:48I don't do what I do because he wants me to do what I do!
01:00:54Listen on that dirt!
01:00:57One person was forced and humiliated against what they thought they ought to do.
01:01:01Now, do you think that one person ought to tell another person and change another person and do what?
01:01:05Nobody ever said that they ought to-
01:01:07It's not going to do you any good to cry.
01:01:09When a grown man cries, it just makes him feel like a dirty crumb or something.
01:01:13Do you want to see on the dirt everything happens on the dirt?
01:01:22A king could squat on the dirt and a pot of flowers grow and a little baby, listen, right, right there.
01:01:30A baby was crying, his little kid-
01:01:32I don't know, you gotta get hold of yourself because you are an awful sloppy mess.
01:01:35All right, lie right down there on the dirt, right in the same place.
01:01:45Stop the bottle, a baby's damn bottle.
01:01:51You could run over that with a truck.
01:01:53Hey, I tell you what, you come inside the shack and we'll play records and dance.
01:02:06Hey, don't do that. Cut that out, that's goofy.
01:02:10Make me feel buggy watching you.
01:02:11Are you going away with me?
01:02:15I don't want to see anybody sucking on a baby's bottle.
01:02:20I don't either. It's a symbol.
01:02:26Like a brass symbol.
01:02:28For a ruptured spleen and a brass monkey and a flight of the bumblebee and a fare thee well and a well digger's butt in Montana and a home is where the heart is and a homily and an early to bed and an early to rise and a poor Richard's almanac.
01:02:47Benjamin Franklin was right, the homilies of life.
01:02:55Like get up in the morning and go to work and save your money and do a good job and it all goes around in a circle.
01:03:06But a desiccated liver is still a penny saved, is a penny earned, and any kind of a rocket, any kind is still going to be cropped.
01:03:28Hey, where are you going, kid?
01:03:29You should never have got yourself stuck in this thing.
01:03:59I'm going to go.
01:04:11Oh, Heidi, what happened?
01:04:13Ah, keep your mouth shut. The cops did this to you.
01:04:18You want to argue with the cops anymore?
01:04:21You know, I want the two of you to start thinking that everything's going to be all right.
01:04:24I want you to start thinking about getting to San Diego and a job and everything's going to be good.
01:04:30I want you to get what's known as the hopes.
01:04:33The ragged ass hopes.
01:04:35Real strong so you can taste it good in your mouth like something you never had before.
01:04:39I'll get you. I'll get a job and come back.
01:04:42No, you won't. You can't.
01:04:44You're a nothing, but you ain't got the sense to know it yourself.
01:04:47You think you're something or you might be something, but you ain't and you never will be.
01:04:52A miserable bare butt and a hungry kid.
01:04:54A stiff neck and an empty head.
01:04:57You haven't got any oil.
01:04:58You haven't got any slide.
01:05:00You haven't got any angles.
01:05:01And that's what it takes.
01:05:03You'll lose that job.
01:05:05And you're going to have more kids and maybe you're good looking now,
01:05:08but it'll all go wasted and shot to hell on him.
01:05:11When your kids grow up, they'll be knocked up or knocked flat and he won't get a job.
01:05:16And the false teeth you get won't fit worth a damn.
01:05:19They'll fit cheap and lousy like a pair of clackers.
01:05:23And your hair will string around like a wet floor mop.
01:05:38What do you get the hooks you made for her?
01:05:44Harry put them there.
01:05:51What are you going to do?
01:05:52I'll give you to Joe.
01:05:57You know him.
01:05:58He starts low and works up.
01:06:05Please, don't do it to me.
01:06:11I don't like Harry.

01:08:57Then in Honolulu.
01:08:59How about that much you did?
01:09:00Did you have to be waiting like a dog?

01:09:14You're crazy.
01:09:16Like Harry's watching.
01:09:18The only way he can get his kicks.
01:09:24You're crazy.

01:09:37Some punk in a fight?
01:09:38You gave me to the conflict.
01:09:39I was nothing.
01:09:40You are nothing.
01:09:41Come on, get down in the dirt and do some push-ups.

01:12:44Deserve don't have nothing to do with it.
01:12:46If things happened by what they deserve, maybe I wouldn't be here.
01:12:54And maybe you wouldn't be a crazy damned whore.
01:12:59Maybe a lot of things.
01:13:00I'm all through with you.
