11:16fred is being transferred the one and a half miles to saint james's hospital
11:29here we are i'll get some eating on for you fred lovely
11:33when i was younger you see it called a busybody because if there were ever any drama i always
11:47wanted to be there but i've always wanted to be the one that made people's days that bit better
11:55i was born in leeds the street that i grew up on it was called the rain
12:00and i think i could probably go into 90 percent of people's houses without knocking on the door
12:05that's how how close the community was
12:09the older generation that lived there that they remember how it were
12:12it was a very very community-based area
12:16but leeds is a large city now that's becoming larger by the day
12:22just waiting on ryan to come back we'll get you through can't hear me can you no
12:33we'll be leaving you now you're leaving don't you i am
12:42all right well it's been lovely to meet you i'll miss you too
12:46all the best lovely to meet you okay then see you later
12:49see you later
12:59did he say he lived there 56 years yeah i bet he's seen some right changes around that area
13:03i bet he used to be really really quiet back in day you know 56 years ago half of the marshes
13:09probably weren't even there no no and now he's in a concrete jungle isn't he he is 89 and independent
13:20you can't complain at that no it's like no we're not at that stage yet we don't need a stair lift
13:26it's a bit tough for that generation though out there hard as nails aren't it yeah
13:42ambulance service is the patient breathing uh yeah she's literally she's pregnant and she's been
13:49listen listen to me is the patient awake
13:51she's awake that's just been spewing up in the water which would go in all over the kitchen
13:57yorkshire ambulance service is now receiving over 220 999 calls per hour okay just keep her
14:04awake and turn her gently on her side as she wakes up i do just have to advise that due to
14:09how busy we are the standard time frame in the area is showing anywhere up to two hours
14:14in times of high demand the service escalates its clinical safety plan guys level three three three
14:20mel which means it prioritizes emergency ambulances to the most poorly and vulnerable patients
14:27hello i feel my way they are coming to you as quickly as they can okay yeah right
14:36ellie is on her 33rd call of the shift just keep yourselves calm i know i know it's scary all right
14:43but just try and keep yourselves calm are they there yeah right i'll leave you with the crew all right
14:50take care thank you there are currently 186 patients waiting for an ambulance so i'm organizing
14:58the healthy now stay on the line with a new call being received every 15 seconds is she completely
15:05alert and wait times are continuing to lengthen i just want to know when it's gonna call me at the
15:11moment it could be anywhere around one hour and 50 minutes oh my gosh one hour and 50 minutes is too
15:17much i i know i'm afraid there's nothing that can be done about that that is just due to the high
15:21volume of calls at the moment jerome can i take 1373 for a cat 2 or badly please uh no i'm gonna need them
15:29sorry just gone to csp level four got 97 just waiting in west at the moment and we're approaching
15:37200 over yorkshire so just thought i'd let you know all right with csp level four in place lower
15:44priority calls won't be sent an emergency ambulance instead they will receive alternative support got no
15:51available resources at all at moment what a day
16:081692 luke and regan have just become available hi 1692 i've got a job to pass to you please
16:18yeah go on we've got an elderly female molly she's fallen over she's got a nosebleed and an arm injury
16:26the call did come in to us so hopefully we'll get to her pretty quick yeah we are on our way to her
16:41the crew have been dispatched to pudsey where the patient has fallen outside a library
16:4645 minutes for a 91 year old we are what like six miles away and we're the closest available
16:53resource yeah
17:06hello molly can i have a look at this arm of yours oh god oh dearie me i didn't realize what a mess
17:16yes love if you can get a tool i'll finish wrecking the place shall i
17:23all right yes is this painful i can imagine one christmas eve many years ago i broke both both what
17:35elbows oh molly you do not have much luck i'm gonna get you to our ambulance and we're gonna have a good
17:42look at you on the ambulance
17:49shove you up hey we're doing that molly don't you worry
17:55your day's obviously panned out a little bit differently to how you expected hasn't it molly
17:59i thought i was doing wonderful i was on my way to b and m oh and what did you get from b and m
18:07well they didn't have what i wanted i wanted some cream crackers and i got some toothpaste
18:12right so molly we need to we need to have a look at you we're going to do try and get your arm and
18:19your shoulder more comfortable but we need to assess what's wrong with it so are you okay for us to take
18:23your coat off
18:27bless her heating's on i'm loving your little outfit this is very trendy what what have i done
18:35right keep it there okay keep it there it might be a case that your worst injury might be your arm it
18:42seems to do yeah she's told you oh yeah that's me told isn't it is it broken chances are yes your
18:52shoulder potentially is out but i can't fully assess you at this present minute no um so what we're
19:00gonna do is take me in oh yes luke's gonna support your back i'm gonna swing your legs up
19:12are you comfortable like that molly are you sure can you do the head yes we will get that sorted
19:22we just want to also molly give you some pain relief because you're clearly in a lot of pain
19:29all right we'll support your arm in a couple of ways so you can't feel it when we're moving about as
19:35notch okay we need to get this arm out of the sleeve okay
19:46you know when you fell did you go dizzy or anything before you fell no okay
19:54did you trip over something i tried to stop myself and there was no chance
19:59right molly so this is gas and air i want you to breathe in and out through this straw
20:08right and breathe in perfect nice low deep breaths for me okay
20:18right then molly molly molly molly molly yes yes yes
20:23no no no no no no no no no stop panicking i need you to slow your breathing down
20:37you are panicking breathing yeah okay slow it down i'm not gonna let anything bad happen to you okay
20:45all right all right what part's that now
20:59yep yep yep yep yep yep i've got it
21:01a few more bumps full of bumps you've had a bit of an eventful day haven't you
21:20oh molly can i adopt you all right because you're amazing
21:31you're amazing
21:42ambulance service is the patient breathing is the patient awake tell me exactly what's happened
21:48yorkshire ambulance service has now been operating at the highest demand level
21:52for four hours are you able to make your way to hospital without an ambulance at the moment
21:57the average wait time for category three patients is now two and a half hours
22:08ambulance service is the patient breathing
22:13okay tell me exactly what's happened
22:16i'm calling about myself i am pregnant and i am getting bleeding from my vagina
22:20how many weeks pregnant are you eight weeks
22:30so i'm organizing the help for you stay on the line and i'll tell you exactly what to do next okay
22:34so you need to assume the most comfortable position just take deep breaths between any pain that you're
22:39having all right okay is there any serious bleeding
22:46you're doing well okay we've got the help all organized for you
22:56we will aim to respond to you as soon as we can but we're experiencing an extremely high demand for
23:00the service at the moment in your area the current waiting times could be three hours but with the
23:05current pressures that is likely to be significantly longer you may be able to access some help faster by
23:11making your own way to an emergency department okay all right you're gonna wait okay so in that
23:21meantime you need to keep your telephone line free because you may be called back but if your condition
23:27changes or if you no longer require this ambulance you are to call us back on 999 okay
23:34all right then take care all right thank you all right you're more than welcome
23:41all right
23:58ambulance service is the patient breathing i can't see in the car all the airbags has gone off
24:03there's been an rtt with a car and a lorry on the m606 towards bradford
24:09right so how many patients can you see it looks like three at the moment there's the driver a child
24:15and then a passenger there's other people in the car by the looks of it i think they're trying to get
24:20in now hi zach it's nick on the quick care desk um i'm just getting reports of an rtc that's coming in
24:27on the end of this case are you okay if i give you a bit of an update around what's going on
24:32yeah please mate go ahead so it's looking like we've got three patients one adult patient and two
24:37children and there's an 11 year old who has reported the unconscious and it's going to be a multi-agency
24:43response yeah roger all received mate thanks very much specialist paramedic zach is eight minutes away
24:51also on route are three ambulances a team leader and yorkshire's air ambulance service
25:08as the first clinician on scene zach needs to identify who requires the most urgent medical treatment
25:21three vehicle rtc uh wagon and wagon behind us uh mum and dad here with the youngest son we've got
25:30kian head injury uh leg injury he's on o2 at the moment we are trying to keep c-spine stable
25:36we tell me he's all right
25:43kian my name's zach i'm one of the paramedics where are you hurting buddy kian look at me buddy
25:51where are you hurting mate we've got daddy's got a decent light to his head yeah son's 26 yeah i got
25:58hurt the ankle and this kid in here is 11 reduced gcs with a head injury okay my plan for him pin this door
26:05back get a border and just get him out and then we can pop a look in yeah i want him laying down on
26:10the board yeah so sit him onto it lays back down slide him up it once he's out we're going to go
26:16straight onto the stretcher which will be here getting me immediately onto an ambulance and then we can
26:20have a look in properly
26:35um
26:37thanks no no you're fine thank you
26:42hi can you leave hems running please we've got a um 11 year old male gcs 13. yeah i'll
26:49receive mate i'll update so hems uh 11 year old male gcs 13 out of 15 loss of one to iron two to voiceover
26:55main issues are head and uh leg mate could you try and um cut his socks and shin pads down and if
27:09you can get his shoes off without is that right just squeeze the hand from it
27:13i'm gonna try and put a candle in here mate but i'm not convinced zach needs to administer pain relief
27:25to kian in order to straighten his leg and ensure blood circulation
27:29do you want a hand holding uh if you want mine that'd be sweet thank you
27:39ah fine yeah would you just let him on
27:45hey stu how are you mate yeah um so um 11 year old yeah back seat passenger my biggest concern is a
27:55head injury and this much our femur yeah we've had about four guys at cannulating and can't get any
27:59access because he kind of he talks to us he's he's sort of talking to us yeah kian kian
28:04so we need to put an intraosseous needle in because we're unable to get intravenous access
28:25we want to give him some station and sort out this femur so we've got that drill
28:30intraosseous access delivers medication directly into the bone marrow it's commonly used in children
28:38who are often harder to cannulate you squeeze this hand that's it right strong again it's gonna feel
28:47a bit strange mate okay it feels a bit strange but it's absolutely fine all right buddy okay a needle
28:54coming up scratch buddy squeeze my hand won't you that's it mate that's it it's okay all right buddy
29:00you're doing really well it's okay mate it's okay well done buddy well done you squeeze squeeze his
29:07hands you squeeze that's it okay really well this might sting a little bit but it's completely normal
29:14buddy all right okay i know that's probably the leg that's hurting you more than anything else
29:29well done well done well done well done that's enough medicine for now
29:33you've been absolutely brilliant sat to 100 bp is nice and stable he seems sedated
29:59catnography has been solid yeah yeah amazing job thanks mate thanks guys cheers
30:12kian will be taken by ambulance to liege general infirmary where staff will continue to care for him
30:18in control chloe and jerome are coming to the end of their 12-hour shift
30:33um i'm really sorry but it's been mental you know i don't make an habit of leaving it
30:39we've really all kept praise but it's just been flat out no problem get yourself up
30:45thank you and i shall see you bright and early in the morning
30:51after operating at the highest demand for over 10 hours the ambulance service de-escalates to
30:57csp level three but 138 patients are still waiting for an ambulance
31:10what was yesterday like cam horrendous mate
31:23it's tuesday and the start of another 12-hour shift for call handler camp today he's joined by cat
31:35ambulance service is the patient breathing i won't be too i need some food okay what's the
31:41telephone number that you're calling from just in case the line's disconnected
31:43hello the call in progress is from a patient well known to the ambulance service kathleen what is the
31:54reason that you require an emergency ambulance in the last two weeks she has made over 50 999 calls to
32:02the ambulance service kathleen it's the ambulance service you need to talk to me you're holding up an
32:09emergency line i need something to eat okay kathleen you've called 999 for an emergency life-saving
32:16ambulance okay we cannot provide you any breakfast i didn't say it was breakfast okay
32:26i'm gonna kind of help here hello we've just gone for the last number for me please
32:30thank you kathleen
32:34she keeps hanging up the line but then bt keeps saying she's reconnecting so she's just re-dialing
32:38straight away yeah yeah just asking on this one ask this one okay so kathleen can you still hear me
32:45because she's not going to give you any answers see if you can treat her as much as you can if not
32:49we'll do as yesterday cup it and if not send it to 111 kathleen the ambulance service is still on the
32:55line for you okay so when you when you're ready to talk to me just let me know what's happening
33:03i think she keeps pressing 999 you can hear it dialing the buttons can we try and transfer it to 111
33:09right i've sent it to them so if she just follows the options they'll sort her out you never know
33:15what's gonna happen then so she's called nine times yesterday 15 times on the 13th
33:22the 12th the 11th the 9th the 10th the 7th the 6th
33:27ambulance service is the patient breathing only just is the patient awake
33:34i've got kathleen she said she's only just breathing see what you can get from her if she's talking
33:42normally don't ineffective i already have kathleen's response has classified her as having ineffective
33:49breathing the system has now automatically allocated her a category one ambulance tell him that we've got
33:57a care plan in place for this lady do they want to call it back um just because at the minute we're running as a cat one
34:04it's a call handler gone that's an ambulance gone even though she's a frequent you have to go
34:09we're gonna have to travel because what if she didn't
34:12she's a patient reading oh yes it's just a small kid got hit with the car and how old is he yes he's 10
34:27years old well don't talk about the parents they are giving me someone trying to get everyone to just
34:33remain calm for him for now okay
34:391671 receiving over hi yeah 1671 i've got a job for you please um we've got a 10 year old male being
34:48hit by a car there is a lot of shouting and swearing in the background so yeah just let me know how you
34:53get on with this one please yeah roger not a problem we're heading there now
34:58so they've said there's a lot of shouting yeah yeah parents won't be happy no it's the worst thing
35:08as a parent to see one of your children hurt
35:16oh it's outside my land street doctors in that yeah far from it pick few streets down
35:28oh is it that we're here to see what's his name dominic dominic nice to meet you sir
35:58what's happened today you got in a crash was it this car here yeah okay how old are you dominant
36:08dominic nine years old and whereabouts is the pain can you point to it on the top
36:17anything underneath no pain can you wiggle your toes no and does this foot hurt not that not this
36:26bruise here a little bit okay so what we're going to do is we're going to get our our stretcher out
36:33of the ambulance okay we'll bring it here and then we can lift you onto the stretcher and we'll wheel you
36:39to the ambulance and we'll do all your checks there does that sound okay lovely stuff is this the driver
36:48what happens in your words well i was coming from that side it was doing it slowly yeah

44:15high over the last few hours why do you feel like you can't move from the chair at the moment
44:21um i have um secondary progressive ms right diagnosed in 1994 right so i'm a bit of a hero
44:31because i'm 31 years this may with it okay and as a result very stiff
44:37but you've noticed it's taken me longer to get dressed and get undressed and do the stuff i usually do
44:44and is that do you do that independently normally yeah i just so it just feels like i'm
44:49wading through treacle type of thing okay we'll see if we can get you up see if you can start to
44:58unsiffen these things lindsay normally when jill struggles with a movement normally would you be
45:08able to help her up and move it's too heavy also if she doesn't trust anyone okay she'll trust you
45:15guys yeah yeah i've got no chance you know right now we're going to be task focused okay yeah we're
45:22going to stand up all right we will not drop you okay i promise you worst case scenario we won't drop you

46:31oh sugar right okay well done
46:36i should have i should have a bell that should have a wheelchair and go forward
46:43yeah should have water
46:49how often do you come up
46:50that was often i was just saying that i've got a nine-year-old and 11 year old my husband's job's
46:55in london so i can't get up as often it's hard i mean the way she is at the moment she can't live
47:02independently the way she's been the last three days but this isn't the way that she is has been
47:06normally it's obviously the concern is this was a permanent change yeah and that's what she's scared
47:12off as well yeah absolutely if you don't mind me asking you seem like a little bit a little bit
47:17upset about it yeah yeah it's the single biggest heartbreak of my life what's happened to you
47:22and it's been so slow but it's so bad now and she's so resistant to you know she this is the way she's
47:29done it and this has got her this far and now i say to all that i think this is getting in the way of
47:34you having a better quality of life yeah but she won't be told
47:43she's the younger i'm the oldest state person by a clear three years bless her she cares though doesn't
47:53she she does yeah
47:58what i'm scared of is that i i'm not going to get back to where i was what in the chair
48:05big life okay right okay if you and lindsay have an argument and she's like nah i'm sodding off
48:12yeah and you're like oh well how am i meant to get something to eat now well she can't stay forever
48:17can she no no she's got and yeah my carer's coming thirsty but then she's coming exactly then i'm on
48:23my own friday is that playing in your head at all or has that been playing in survival it always is
48:32i really don't want to take you in but i think realistically
48:35we need to get you seen by people who are smarter and better trained than us
48:46all right you good yeah
48:51ramp is in operation you are
48:59obviously i really hope it's not the ns because
49:02i can't go away but i have to put my hands up and say yeah i'm just my i might be knackered
49:13i might it might get worse
49:17you seem to be faced with a very um realistic mindset yeah um yeah with that background of
49:25i'm still gonna fight which is amazing to see it's good to see yeah but if it comes to the point
49:32where you need to accept more help start using things like that that chair i'm trying to do that
49:40i'm trying i've been trying to do that because this one knows exactly what i should be doing
49:47way before i did and she knows me
50:00i think everyone's safe and out of danger brilliant that's all received
50:26i guess 1671 just so you know you have been diverted to a cardiac arrest
50:44that's a cardiac arrest cardiac arrest but they're about to gain entry
51:04which is about to get an emergency response but they're about to gain the vaccine
51:08it's about to gain a full time to gain a family and also get more attention to the
51:18headquarters for the transfer of the department and the ones you've tried to do it by the
51:22the ones you've tried to do is support the liability file and that man's said there will be a
51:23lot of work that's great to do it by the other people and the other people who did not
51:25patient is deceased so neighbors said last time was heard over a week ago do you encounter this
51:35kind of thing quite often then in your role okay yeah the difficulty from our aspect is where
51:41the tenant refuses support yeah there's always so much we can really know yeah
51:47the security when he tried to offer him help he was adamant he wouldn't have it and we go to people
51:55that are in quite severe medical need and they're still like yeah i can manage and you're like
52:00you can't though today you know people refuse help for a number of different reasons or whatever that
52:10be they're ashamed almost of the proud person that they once were and and now they're unable to live
52:16their life how they used to and others it's because they have no one but i think that's due to life
52:23nowadays everyone's too busy to check in on the neighbor yeah although the world's changed for
52:31the better in ways like that it's changed for the worse i'm pretty sure that is mexican
52:39um so we could potentially get through to him
52:41does he live quite close by not close by okay
52:51hi i'm from yorkshire ambulance service

53:26that information on to you today all right you'll you'll take care goodbye
53:40that was my grandma's favorite poem oh i had the the words to footprints titled on my arm there yeah
53:52so just the end bit when you see only one set of footprints that's what i kind of do
53:57my mom was a single mom
54:04so we we laid heavy on my grandparents
54:09i had a very close relationship with them
54:16i lost my grandma about 12 years ago
54:25i think the job that we do we we learned that deaths are a natural process of life
54:32i'm glad that she got to see me join the ambulance service
54:35she was definitely proud of me
54:39she wrote poems and i write them now
54:42so maybe it's something that she's passed down and it can help me reflect on jobs
54:53we can't save everyone
54:56but so long as you can walk away from a job and think you've you've put your heart and soul into it
55:01and you've done everything that you can for that person then i don't know why anyone wouldn't be proud
55:05today has been a day of where i can go home and think we've made a difference yeah
55:18in yorkshire's land where green hills roll
55:21a call comes in a lifeline's toll from leeds to harrogate up whitby's shore
55:32the yorkshire ambulance is evermore
