J.J. McCarthy’s first six NFL starts have raised major concerns for the Minnesota Vikings. With just six touchdowns, ten interceptions, and a passer rating under 58, he currently ranks among the league’s worst-performing quarterbacks. But the blame doesn’t fall on McCarthy alone — the Vikings’ front office created an extreme pressure situation by letting Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, and even Aaron Rodgers slip away.

This video breaks down the mistakes, the pressure, the lack of a clear strategy, and how Minnesota may have mishandled their top-10 pick from the very start.

00:00Let's talk about J.J. McCarthy. After six starts in the NFL, it's pretty clear things are not going well for the Vikings' young quarterback.
00:09Honestly, almost every quality you want to see in a successful NFL QB just hasn't shown up yet.
00:16His stats tell a brutal story, only six touchdowns, ten interceptions, and a passer rating of just 57.9.
00:25If he had enough attempts to qualify, he'd be dead last among all starters by a huge margin.
00:32But it's not just the numbers. Watching him on the field, the eye test isn't any better.
00:38His reads are slow, his decision-making is questionable, and his confidence looks shot.
00:44Plus, he struggled to stay healthy. All of this is putting him on a fast track to being considered a major draft best.
00:52So, is this all on McCarthy? Not entirely. A big part of the problem seems to be the immense pressure he's under.
01:00And a lot of that pressure was created by the Vikings themselves.
01:04Remember, they traded up to draft him at number 10, passing on other guys.
01:09It felt like they fell in love with his personality and what his college coach said about him.
01:14Maybe overlooking some real concerns about his passing ability in a pro-style offense.
01:19That was the first questionable move.
01:22The next one was how they handled the quarterback situation after Sam Darnold had an incredible 14-3 season in 2024.
01:30Instead of keeping a proven winner to mentor McCarthy and ease him in, they let Darnold walk.
01:36This immediately cranked up the pressure on McCarthy to be the guy right away.
01:40Then, you had other veterans who could have stabilized the position.
01:46Daniel Jones was there for a minute before heading to Indianapolis.
01:50Aaron Rodgers even expressed interest in joining, but the Vikings didn't pursue it.
01:56Every time they passed on a veteran, the spotlight on McCarthy got brighter and hotter.
02:01They basically threw him into a pressure cooker instead of giving him a runway to develop,
02:07especially after he missed his entire rookie year with that knee injury.
02:11This isn't to make excuses for McCarthy's poor play.
02:15It's a critique of the Vikings' front office and their strategy, or lack thereof.
02:20It seemed like no one had a clear, unified plan for the quarterback position in 2025.
02:26Was it Darnold, Jones, Rodgers, or an unproven McCarthy?
02:31This indecision created chaos.
02:34Kevin O'Connell is a fantastic coach who has made many quarterbacks look good.
02:40But even the best coach can't fix a broken strategy from the front office.
02:44The organization failed to build a stable environment for their young quarterback.
02:49They put obstacle after obstacle in his path, and now they're seeing the results.
02:54It looks like the Vikings completely mishandled J.J. McCarthy right from the very beginning.
03:01What do you think?
03:02Did the Vikings set McCarthy up to fail?
